This year sees the running of the 90th Comrades marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on 31 May. Comrades is not just a race but a journey, which starts months before the big day, with long hours of training and preparation being put in, in order to qualify and reach the starting line of “The Ultimate Human Race” as it has become known. Having completed 4 Comrades marathons I can attest to the incredible camaraderie that exists amongst the runners as well as the amazing atmosphere created by the spectators as they spur the runners on and enable them to dig deep when the going gets tough. In this issue Tilda Tearle shares her tips and advice on running Comrades and is a must read for all those running this year’s race. The staff at Diversity would like to wish all Comrades runners a safe and rewarding race.

We may not all aspire to run Comrades but being fit and healthy is an integral part of one’s well being and the sound recommendations offered in our article “Fitness & Health… The Benefits” are well within reach of each of us. Climbing “Kili”, as the world’s highest free-standing mountain has become affectionately known, offers a fascinating glimpse into the highs and lows of a life changing adventure and is sure to prompt many a reader to add it to their “bucket list”. Happy reading!

Till next month, take care and God bless.

Race

Tips by Tilda Tearle

This year I will be running my 29th Comrades. I ran my first

Comrades in 1984. In 1993 I was the first lady home and in 2013 I landed up in St. Anne’s Hospital and watched the finish on TV. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly side of Comrades but the one run that I will always remember is my first. Ask any Comrades runner which run remains with them. It will be their first.

The one inescapable fact to be faced by every Comrades runner is that it is a very long way. it is one continuous, steady, economic run, paced as evenly as possible and it is well worth remembering the story of the rabbit and tortoise. Mentally i split the race into two marathons followed by a time trial. Remember your only objective for the day is to get to Pietermaritzburg before cut off. Along the way you will find many new “friends” you are not likely to meet again but on Comrades day you will share each other’s struggles.

Diet:A drastic change in diet before the big run is not recommended. Don’t try anything new. Stick to the diet

you have been following and the food you normally eat before you run a marathon. i recommend a light breakfast on the morning of the race. Coffee and toast have always worked for me. During the race you need to have a snack. on any normal day you don’t go all day without food, so why do it on Comrades day? There is plenty on offer – boiled potatoes, chips, biscuits, sweets, bananas and chocolates. i drink coke and water during the run and have a couple of boiled potatoes. Don’t stop and drink at every table. over drinking can cause problems. in the early days when i was fast i used to be back in time for lunch so eating was never an issue.

Clothes: if you have bought a new vest, shorts or socks take them for a test run before Comrades. you don’t want to

5find that on race day they chafe. The morning of the race is often cold. you will need an old T-shirt to wear over your running kit. you can drop the T-shirt once you have warmed up. Don’t forget to tie your timing chip onto your shoe. Make sure your watch has a new battery.

When you stand at the start remember what a privilege it is to be part of this unique event. you have been blessed with good health and a body that is able to run.

During the race you will go through good and bad patches. you will wonder what you are doing there! At those times remember all the

hours you have spent training for this special day. When you run into the stadium the day’s struggles will be forgotten and an unforgettable experience and medal will be your reward. on 31st May this year every runner will be a hero.

an overall vibrant and positive state of well-being. Whether you choose to take up a new sport, go for weekend walks with family and friends, join your local fitness social group, or start a fitness program in the gym, the best workouts are ones you can do anywhere, providing less opportunities to disrupt your routine. Guidelines currently suggest at least 30 minutes per day of nonstop aerobic/ cardiovascular exercise performed at a moderate intensity.

When you begin a new fitness routine start off slowly and in a controlled manner. This will give you a good base to work from. Warm up at the beginning of every workout, ensure proper technique and stretch at the end to prevent injuries. Progression can be made through increasing the speed, intensity and duration of exercises. Make sure to

Living in this fast paced digital world comes with its benefits of convenience. You can pretty much organize anything online these days without any physical effort. Unfortunately we now find ourselves lacking calorie expenditure through daily activities of the past. I’m not saying you should go out and hunt for your meat or climb trees for mangoes. Just be mindful that we need to add consistent physical activity to our daily routines to burn those extra calories and live a life full of vitality. Some important health benefits of exercise include a reduction in anxiety, depression, stress, prevention of adult onset diabetes and a lowering of cholesterol and blood pressure levels. it also has its advantages in assisting in weight management, boosting energy levels, normalising sleeping patterns, improving circulation, all resulting in

By Robby Kojetinthe largest volcano on Earth is often compared to walking from the equator to the south Pole. Day one begins in the thick humidity of the Tanzanian rain forest, as the path weaves its way through the dense greenery. This is often accompanied by torrential showers and 5 days later, climbers top out in arctic conditions with temperatures well below zero.

each day is a new adventure with a new climatic zone, wildlife, scenery from rocky cliffs to the towering giant lobelia plants and each camp is about 800m higher than the last. However as we gain altitude the temperature drops steadily as summit day approaches. every morning the ice on the tent is thicker and the scenery more stark as we traverse the moon like plains of

climbingkilimanjaro

I remember reading an article on Kili and the caption in the photo said,

“Yes, there is snow on the Equator”. From that moment onward it became a bee in my bonnet and climbing Africa’s highest mountain was the start of a journey which still has no end in sight.

My first summit of Kilimanjaro was in october 2000 via the Machame route. This route is still a favourite for me, offering exquisite scenery, a physical challenge and a very social environment with trekkers coming from all over the globe. i have since climbed to the summit via the shira, Rongai, Umbwe and Machame route on eight expeditions, each one unique and as memorable as the last.

Taking on the challenge of attempting

11the alpine desert to the high camp, Barafu. Barafu is the swahili word for ice and cold. it is a desolate place where no greenery survives, but is the launch pad from where you will begin your summit attempt.

For most people, ranging from marathon runners to natural-birth mothers, summit night is often described as one of the toughest things they have ever done. and it is.

your summit bid begins at around midnight from high camp at an altitude of ±4600m, as you begin the slow, steady plod that leads to glory. along with your nerves, severe cold, altitude-induced nausea and the constant fear that you have forgotten to pack something, your only thought pattern revolves around getting one foot in front of the other.

If I can offer any advice to anyone planning to put this adventure on their bucket list, i urge you to just stick it out until sunrise. Most climbers, who will throw in the towel, will do so before the sun comes up. The dark and often freezing cold hours are the toughest of the trip but once the first signs of light peek over the horizon, motivation and hopefully some feeling in your fingers will return. as day breaks it becomes apparent that the summit does exist and the endless treadmill of dust and stone has led you to the rim of Kilimanjaro’s crater, the last obstacle between you and that photograph you have spent all that time, money and energy on reaching.

At 5895m above sea level, Uhuru Peak is all yours for the celebrating, enjoy it! For the brief time you spend on top, the world is at your feet and that feeling will never leave you. Each and every summit still gives me a lump in my throat because it is special and as overwhelming as it is humbling.

With your camera safely away in your pocket, it’s a long way back down to where you came from. on Kilimanjaro it really is as much about the journey as it is about the summit and very seldom does the same person who arrived at the airport a week before return without having experienced the exhilarating impact of such a life changing journey.

Film: Far From the Madding Crowd

Director: Thomas Vinterberg

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge, Juno Temple, Matthais Schoenaerts, Bradley Hall, Jessica Barden

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, who gained

international attention with his Oscar Nominated film The Hunt, takes on a cinematic adaptation of the 19th century classic Thomas Hardy novel Far From the Madding Crowd and what a superb piece of cinema it is.

The high production values and the crackling onscreen energy between Carey Mulligan who plays the headstrong heroine Bathsheba everdene and the handsome yet rugged farm manager Gabriel Oak played by Belgian rising star Matthais Schoenaerts both make this film brilliant and captivating.

at the centre of Thomas Hardy’s

novel was a rather unconventional idea for its time, that of a female heroine taking charge of a large farm in rural Dorset in the 1870’s. Hardy’s novel published in 1874 at the height of the Victorian era became an instant classic and since the twentieth century has been turned into many cinematic adaptations, most notably the 1967 classic film with Julie Christie, Peter Finch, Alan Bates and Terence stamp, as well as a modern day variation, Tamara Drewe (2010) with Gemma Arterton, Luke evans and Dominic Cooper.

Vinterberg’s version of Far From the Madding Crowd is a handsomely produced, exceptionally acted and beautifully shot film in which he extracts genuine performances out

13of Mulligan and schoenaerts along with the rest of the supporting cast including Michael sheen (The Queen), as the prosperous bachelor William Boldwood and the audacious and reckless sergeant Troy, played with a sort of hint of danger by Tom Sturridge. Even Juno Temple as the befallen young damsel, Fanny Robbin is adequately portrayed.

What elevates Vinterberg’s film is an intelligent screenplay by David Nicholls and sumptuous cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen together with wonderful costumes by Janet Paterson. Shot mainly in Buckinghamshire, Far From the Madding Crowd will be sure to illicit a renewed interest in Hardy’s novels and especially in the many film adaptations of his work including the 1979 film Tess directed by Roman Polanski featuring Nastassja Kinski.

so what makes a 19th century classic so relevant in the 21st century? Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby, Shame, and Drive) beautifully portrays in this version, the primary female character, Bathsheba everdene, who is the headstrong driver of commerce and agricultural production as she becomes the sole heir of her uncle’s farm.

Bathsheba has to deal with the business of running a farm, which was naturally male dominated as well as warding off possible suitors, the likes of Boldwood and the arrogant sergeant Troy, whilst her sturdy farm manager, Gabriel Oak, remains loyal to her even when she makes

mistakes. The ending of Far From the Madding Crowd is truly sublime and each character is perfectly cast in their roles.

Thomas Vinterberg’s ravishing and gripping rural drama should surely garner some awards, at least for the handsome production design and for expertly recreating such a literary treasure on the big screen, making the film just as relevant in an age filled with multi-million dollar CGI laden blockbusters.

Far From the Madding Crowd is an exceptional film and highly recommended for those that enjoyed Jane Campion’s The Piano, Joe Wright’s 2005 film Pride and Prejudice and more recently Cary Fukunaga’s superb film Jane Eyre featuring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.
