AWMA were engaged to supply modulating penstocks as part of Southern Rural Water’s Lake Glenmaggie Southern Outlet Auxiliary Valve Project.

An auxiliary discharge regulating valve releases precise and continuous water from Glenmaggie Lake in Victoria. AWMA’s Penstocks divert this water between irrigation and river flows.

The control gates include a stainless steel TLF Penstock

fitted with Limitorque actuator and a manually operated ULF Penstock. Both have been designed to withstand 3.7 metres of static head pressure as well as an additional 2.2 metres of dynamic head pressure due to flow velocities of up to 12m/s.

FLOOD PREVENTION

GENERALLYSPEAKINGThere has been a lot of talk in recent years about

increasing global populations, insufficient food

production and finite fresh water sources.

The capacity of Australia’s agricultural sector to

contribute to a sustainable future where we all have

food on our plates is regularly promoted in global

forum.

Australia is a world leader in innovative and

productive farming practices. AWMA are world

leaders in water management.

AWMA works across all sectors of the water industry

with strong roots in the irrigation sector, particularly

water delivery through open channel networks.

AWMA has partnered with three industry leading

companies; DHI, Parasyn and Observant to form

AIM (Advanced Irrigation Management).

The AIM team are specialists in their field, we

work across numerous industries and through AIM

provide a focused and co-operative approach to

enhancing the management of water delivery through

Australia’s irrigation systems and on farm.

Water delivery through open channels is an ancient

and proven form of transferring water from rivers

and storages to farms allowing viable food and fibre

production.

AIM will assist in improving the efficiency of water

delivery enhancing primary production and in turn

increase the sustainability of our country’s food

sources and population growth.

Please contact AWMA to discuss how AIM can

assist with your irrigation modernisation projects.

Has flood threatened you, your workplace or your assets? As demand for flood prevention rises, so does AWMA’s commitment to assisting

clients develop a holistic solution to flood mitigation.

AWMA has recently extended our suite of flood control products to incorporate

temporary, semi-permanent and permanent solutions.

Leveraging off over a decade of water control experience, AWMA work with

our clients in selecting the most sustainable solutions for their application.

AWMA’s partnership extends through on-site analysis, design, development

and implementation phases to ensure the successful operation of water control

equipment where and when it’s needed most.

Visit the awma.au.com website to view our comprehensive range of flood

mitigation and tidal products, all of which may be offered as part of a standard or

site-specific solution.

AWMA have dispatched water control equipment for the second phase of Western Australia’s Southern Seawater Desalination Plant (SSDP).AWMA were engaged to supply topsealing penstocks identical to the highly successful gates designed and manufactured for stage one of the project.

The TLF Penstocks measure 4m high x 2.4m wide and have been hydrostatically tested to withstand 60 tonne of head pressure.

AWMA are certified penstock suppliers for the Water Corporation in Western Australia.

SSDP DISPATCHEDAlstom, a global leader in the supply of equipment and services for power generation, has engaged AWMA to supply diversion gates for Keppel Energy in Singapore.Following a signed contract with Keppel Merlimau Cogen Pte Ltd (KMC), Alstom is providing the entire plant and all associated equipment, for the €300 million project. Alstom’s combined cycle technology, is among the most efficient and reliable technologies currently available.

AWMA has successfully delivered water control infrastructure for three sites within the power plant.

Two sites required stainless steel (grade 316) stopboards of up to 6m high and 4m wide whilst the third site required a 4m x 3m bulkhead.

The water control gates will divert flow from the turbines, providing isolation and the mitigation of tidal waters during maintenance shutdowns.

AWMA also supplied two stopboard lifting frames with a working load limit of up to 6000kg and two aluminium storage racks.

The custom designed stopboards feature rollers allowing the immersion of gates during a hydrodynamic flow of 4.3 cumecs.

All three sites control water which has passed through the turbines and is therefore of an extremely high temperature. In combination with the sea water in the outfall channel, the environment is highly corrosive requiring the inclusion of cathodic protection on the gates and frames.

AWMA were engaged by ITS Trenchless to provide isolation of Sydney Water’s storm water system located beneath Sydney University. Two stainless steel WLF penstocks custom designed and manufactured by AWMA will seal up to 12m head pressure to allow for maintenance upgrades.

With the penstocks mounted below ground level, operation will be via AWMA’s 240V AC Portable Actuator.

Prof. R.J. Keller presented the paper “The LayFlat Gate for Flow Regulation and Measurement – Development and Experience in Large Scale Installations” at the Hydraulic Measurements and Experimental Methods 2012 Conference (HMEM2012) in the USA last month. The paper showcased AWMA’s LayFlat Gate and the successful flow algorithm developed for its regulation and measurement capacity.

The LayFlat’s unique features and accurate flow management involved extensive research and development, resulting in thousands of installations of one of the world’s most successful water management gates.

Back home, a LayFlat Gate and automated actuation system has been installed for SA Department of Water near Fairview, SA.

The gate structure is fitted with stilling tubes and ultrasonic level sensors to indicate the upstream and downstream water levels within ±2.0mm accuracy. Site information including upstream and downstream levels, gate position and flow is sent back to the water authority’s database via an Observant telemetry system. The system’s mode of operation can also be remotely changed using the web based user interface.

The LayFlat automation system utilises solar power with battery back-up specifically designed for operation in remote areas. AS 1657 compliant walkway and handrails form part of the structure.

Mark de Jong, Snr Environmental Officer, Department of Water, SA states “Construction of the gates was first rate and your fabricators should be congratulated. Our installers commented on the quality of the gates and ease of installation”.
