Sexual crimes rife in
Helderberg
DALEEN FOUCH
Although crime statistics for the Helder-
berg indicate that sexual crimes have de-
creased, organisations working with vic-
tims of sexual crimes say that in reality
thesituationismuchworsethanreflected
in police statistics.
TheMinister of Police,NathiMthethwa re-
leased the crime statistics on Thursday 19
September. These crime statistics are re-
leased every year and represent the number
of crimes committed from April to March.
The number of sexual crimes reported to
theStrand,GordonsBay,SomersetWestand
Macassar police precincts has dropped, but
increased slightly in the Lwandle police pre-
cinct.
Ada Buys, manager of Helderberg Patch,
a non-profit organisation supporting chil-
dren who have been sexually abused, says
that many more sexual crimes occur than
those reflected in police statistics, because
not all sexual crimes
are reported to the
SAPS.
According to police
statistics, 21 sexual
crimes were reported
to the Somerset West
police precinct
(which includes Sir
Lowrys Pass). But according to Patch
records, 68 victims of sexual crimes were
treated by Patch in Somerset West and Sir
Lowrys Pass within the same time-frame.
Buys points out that the Patch numbers only
reflect crimes against children and do not in-
clude sexual crimes against adults.
InLwandle,NomzamoandZola114victims
of sexual crimes were treated by Patch, com-
pared to the 93 sexual crimes reported at the
Lwandle police district.
Reinette Evans, director of Helderberg
RapeCrisis, saysRapeCrisis seesmanymore
sexual crime victims than those indicated in
the police statistics. She says victims do not
report sexual crimes in order to avoid the ex-
posure of a court case. Evans says only one
in every 35 sexual crimes is reported to the
police.
Among the reasons listed by Evans are the
fear of having to face the offender in court.
She says sometimes family members are in-
volved, which can also discourage a person
from reporting the crime to the police.
Lieutenant Colonel Andr Traut, spokes-
person for provincial police, says theHelder-
bergarea is servicedbytheKhayelitshaFam-
ily Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Of-
fences (FCS)Unit, adding there are sufficient
membersat theunit to investigate the crimes
within their mandate.
The latest crime statistics show that prop-
erty crime in theStrandhas increaseddrasti-
cally,with913 reportedburglariesat residen-
tial areas fromApril 2012 toMarch 2013, com-
pared to 743 cases reported from April 2011
to March in 2012.
LtCol ShaunvanWyk, station commander
of the Strand police station, says property
crime in the Strand is mostly connected to
thedrugprobleminthearea.Heexplainsthat
people who are dependent on drugs often
commit crimes in desperation. He added that
the high number of unemployed people also
plays a role in property crime.
Property crime in Gordons Bay has de-
creased in all sections, with a drop from 488
burglaries in residential areas from April
2011 to March 2013, to
379 cases from April
2012 to March 2013.
For the period April
2012 to March 2013,
there was a total of 38
murders in the Lwan-
dle police precinct, a
drop from the 48 mur-
ders reported from April 2011 to March 2012.
Station commander at the Lwandle Police
Station,LtColSiwiweSometsewu saysmany
murders were linked to robberies and vigi-
lante retaliation.
He says the stations active attempt to curb
robberies and vigilante behaviour contribu-
ted to the downward trend in murders.
Sometsewu says there was a spike in gang
violence late last year and early this year, es-
pecially in schools. This is seen as a factor
contributingto incidentsofmurder,common
assaultandassaultwith intentiontodogriev-
ous bodily harm.
According toAfrica Check, a non-profit or-
ganisation which promotes accuracy in pub-
licdebate, an increase indrug- relatedcrimes
and driving under the influence indicates
intensified police activity, rather than an
increase in the number of such crimes.
Drug-related crimes increased in all the
areas serviced byHelderberg police stations,
except for a slight decrease at the Gordons
Bay police precinct.
She says victims often do
not report crime to avoid
the exposure of a court
case.

Sy het belowe om onmiddellik

Intussen bly die inwoners ge-

Mev. Rautenbach het so baie

Is SAbecoming thedumpinggroundofpoorproduce?
When I came to South Africa from
Europe, some30yearsago, Inoticed
that the prices of imported goods
wereoftencheaper thanlocallypro-
duced goods, so I started enquiring
about cost margins and benefit cal-
culating.
Most people were astonished by
my questions and the general an-
swer I receivedwas that businesses
dont calculate and put the highest
mark-ups on items for the biggest
benefit.
Then if the item doesnt sell, they
lower the price until it sells well. If
the product doesnt give shop own-
ers a big benefit, they take it off the
market.
Isnt that a primitive approach?
It seems that not much has
changed since I arrived here 30
years ago.
I once read there is nomarket for
hybridorelectriccarsinSouthAfri-
ca. What nonsense!
Its simple if you dont import or
produce a product there will be no
market for it.
Well the same goes for these hy-
brid cars. But first verify the cost to
support such statement.
When I was in Reunion recently
all our friends there drove hybrid
cars.Theyrenotmuchmoreexpen-
sive than other cars and the in-
creased cost can be recuperated
from the fuel saving. They are also
nice to drive and environmentally
friendly.
UnfortunatelythepricesinSouth
Africa aremuch higher than in Eu-
rope so one can never recuperate
the investment on fuel saving,
which iswhy there is nomarket for
these vehicles. Of course, as long as
the government is thriving on high
fueltaxes,oneshouldnotexpectany
changes.
Thebiggestdifficulty inSouthAf-
rica is the thinking behind selling
any product.
In most other countries, the
thinkingbehindsellingaproduct is
tomake a living out of it for oneself
and for the staff.
In SouthAfrica themind set is to
see how quickly businesses can en-
rich themselves. If it is not quick
enough theyre not interested.
Even if the product is not so good
aslongasitsellsandmakesthebusi-
nessman rich quickly they will try
and sell it.
Thisispooregocentricmentality!
How does the country, business,
staffandgeneralpublicbenefitfrom
it?
This is why SouthAfrica is inun-
datedwithscrap,poormaterials, in-
ferior appliances, bad products and
even bad service and why it is fast
becoming the dumping ground of
poor produce.
Most of those narrow-minded
businesspeoplewillcomplainwhen
shrewd foreign nationals come and
take over their businesses.
The only way this can stop is if
businesses call for governmentpro-
tectiontopromoteanartificialmar-
ket, rather than trying to change
their fossilised minds!

Wednesday afternoon one Strand

The incident happened when the
boat they were fishing in capsized
between3and5nauticalmilesoff the

Monday.
This unfortunate and tragic loss
will be deeply mourned by the large
boat fishing family in the Strand
and in fact by all fishermen around
the Cape.
An incident such as this just
proves that no matter how experi-
enced and cautious the skipper of a

The skipper of the boat Phillip

is a well-known as respected boat

were his son Phillip (junior), Alwyn

Fishermen are aware of the dan-

they go to sea, but this profession is
in their blood and is simply some-
thing they must do, no matter how
dangerous.

Thanks to theSomersetWestpolice services for
going that extramile
Iwas filling up ourMercedes at theBPServ-
ice Station on Main Road opposite Virgin
Active on Tuesday evening 20 August,
around 20:00whenmyhusband called to tell
me our Honda had overheated and broken
down on the Macassar off-ramp on the N2,
travelling towards Somerset West.
As he could not contact our mechanic, he
asked if I could come and tow the car home.
On approaching the off-ramp, I noticed
two police vehicles with their blue lights
flashing. My heart skipped more than just
one beat!
To my relief, my husband was standing
under a street-lamp on the side of the road
with one of the officers waiting for me.
As I was somewhat nervous of towing, es-
peciallyatnight, I asked if oneof theofficers
could possibly assist us in towing our car
home.
They all readily agreed and assisted with
fitting the steel tow-rope, escorting us and
steering the Honda home behind my hus-
band and I.
To facilitate towing on Wednesday, we
were planning to leave the car on the road-
side overnight as we have a rather steep
driveway into our garage.
Once again the officers advised against
it informing us that car-theft, especially
this particular model, was on the increase
in our area at present. Many thanks once
again to them for advising and informing
us.
We would like to go on record in express-
ing our sincere gratitude most specifically
towarrant officers Strydom,Hattingh, Ver-
cuil, and constableMichaels. Theywere ex-
tremely helpful, very courteous and all
went more than just that extra mile to help
us.
Keep up the good work.

Copingwith seasonalallergies
Spring is here, andwhile
that means a welcome
end to the winter weath-
er, for many South Afri-
cans it also signals the
beginning of runny nos-
es, itchy eyes and con-
stant sneezing.
According to the South
AfricanAllergy Society, as
many as 2030% of South
Africans suffer from aller-
gic rhinitis, otherwise
known as hay fever.
Over 500 million people
worldwide suffer from hay
fever, with children and
adults 30 to 40 years old, ex-
periencingtheworstsymp-
toms, says Allison Veinings, execu-
tive director of the Self-Medication
Manufacturers Association of South
Africa (SMASA).
Allergies result when the im-
munesystemidentifiesa foreignsub-
stance, such as dust or pollen, incor-
rectly, then classifies it as harmful
and treats it as such, explains Vein-
ings.
Hay fever, in particular, is the re-
sult of outdoor allergens such as pol-
len, and is periodic in nature. Grass
is one of the main triggers of hay fe-
ver in summer, with allergic con-
junctivitis (the allergic inflamma-
tion of the delicate membrane cover-
ing the inner and external part of the
eyelid) being the most common sea-
sonal allergy.More prevalent among
those with asthma, eczema and hay
fever, its symptoms include redness
and excessive watering of the eyes,
swelling of the eyelids and whites of
the eye, and itchiness.
Winter allergies cause similar
symptoms to summer allergies such
as an itchy nose and eyes, sneezing
and watery eyes, and are generally
triggeredby theuseofheatersor fire-
places the mould spores and insect
parts that are often trapped in these
objects are released into the air and
find their way into the nose, setting
off a reaction. Other indoor triggers
are animals and mites.
Following the time line of how
and when irritations start, can high-
light whether someone is a seasonal
allergy sufferer, says Veinings.
The best remedy for
allergies would obvi-
ously be to avoid al-
lergens completely,
however, as this is
notalwayspossible,a
sound knowledge of
self-medication and
responsible self-care
is key for hay fever
sufferers, she con-
cludes.
SMASA, which ad-
vocates responsible
self-care throughout
the year, suggests the
following actions to
maintain a solid self-
care routine during
allergy season:
) Keep a pack of tissues on hand
for days when allergies are at their
worst.
) Use eye drops to relieve itchy,
watery eyes.
) Use an antihistamine to reduce
nasal itching, sneezing and dis-
charge.
) Use a decongestant during win-
ter to clear mucus.
Aswith anyailment or illness, pre-
vention is better than cure. Consult
your local pharmacist, nurse or
health professional for the correct
over-the-counterproducts tomanage
hay fever and other seasonal aller-
gies and schedule an appointment
with your doctor if symptoms per-
sist.
