District-wide Articulation and Math/English Interventions

Background

The District is committed to providing an articulated curriculum with appropriate interventions in order to prepare all students to be successful for the next stage of their education.

As a result of recent discussions related to high school courses and student performance, the Board has requested information on K-12 articulation and on intervention programs.

K-6 English Language Arts (ELA) Program Current Program: Houghton Mifflin Based on initial work done by a committee last year,

we are researching the possibility of a new ELA adoption that will also include English Language Development (ELD) for English Learners: Current program is not aligned to Common Core

Standards The District does not have a state approved ELD

program in the elementary grades, which is a compliance issues

Based on what we spend to implement the current program and what we would spend on an ELD program, the new adoption would be close to cost neutral.

If the Pilot Committee recommends moving to a new adoption, the following will occur: Develop a plan to communicate with teachers

and principals Present to Curriculum Council on Nov. 17 Present to the Board on Dec. 13 Develop a professional development plan

To add additional middle school and high school sections in order to serve more students:

determine if READ 180 is the program to best meet the need

Math Interventions

To implement a K-12 articulated math intervention program: Create a Committee to research:

Web-based math facts fluency programs Some are free, others have costs

Scholastic’s technology–based program (same company as READ 180)

Math “Boot Camp” for entering 7th graders Before/After school math workshops for students

This is happening at some sites Technology issues Professional Development

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Currently AVID is in place at the secondary

level and in several elementary schools. To expand AVID:

Determine impact on master schedule and staffing

Professional Development Estimated $150,000 to expand at secondary

level, $570,000 elementary level

To incorporate AVID-type strategies K-12 throughout the curriculum (but not be official AVID sites): Create a committee to:

Identify key strategies Develop implementation plan Plan for Professional Development Identify costs

Hourly Supplemental Programs

Before/After school interventions in math, ELD, and English Language Arts for elementary, middle, and high school students

Elementary sites: 15 hours a week Secondary sites: 20 hours a week Approximately $500,000 already allocated to

these programs Additional Programs can be offered if funds

allocated (some funds from this program were “swept”)

Additional Articulation Efforts

Leadership Team meeting time devoted to articulation

Math committee (middle and high school) worked on strategic math course curriculum

Professional Learning Communities at sites District interested in formal process for K-12

articulation, especially in preparation for Common Core Standards and new state assessment program
