District Governor’s D9670

Message from the DG

DG Writes, March

Public Relations is the responsibility of each individual Rotarian and vital to the future of our

organization. The simple Rotary International Strategic Plan for 2010-2013 has the following

priorities:

1. Support and strengthen our clubs

2. Focus and increase our humanitarian service

3. Enhance our public image and awareness

Since March is Public Relations Month I would like to dwell on priority 3 for a while, although

the three are closely interrelated. PR could stand for Promoting Rotary and we can use as many

different resources as possible to do this. It is not just pictures in the local paper or the interview

on radio although these things are important. We as individuals must be prepared to share with

family and friends the enjoyment and sense of satisfaction we get from being a Rotarian. We

need to be prepared to say what Rotary is all about in just a few minutes or less and convey the

message in an enthusiastic manner.

To be able to share our enjoyment we first of all must be enjoying Rotary which means we need

to belong to a strong club that is focused on humanitarian work and having fun while doing it.

Here we see the interdependence of the three strategic plan priorities. We must also have a good

understanding of what Rotary is all about beyond the club level to be able to tell someone about

it. Clubs are the heart and soul of Rotary but it is then the philosophy, the integrity and the repu-

tation of our worldwide organization that allows us to achieve so much in humanitarian service

throughout the world.

District 9670 was successful in applying for an RI public relations grant for this year. A small

part of that money was spent on producing ―This Is Rotary‖ pocket cards. They are designed to

supplement the information you pass on to friends, relatives and potential Rotarians and can

easily be carried in your pocket or purse. They are available at all district functions and meetings

over the next few months including PETS and Assemblies. Date for PETS is Saturday2nd April,

District Assembly (Eastern at Singleton) Sunday 3rd April and District Assembly (Western at

Dubbo) Saturday 9th April. It is important that all future club leaders make an effort to get there.

Club Presidents and boards are reminded that you have until 31st March to complete and return

the Presidential Citation Form. Most clubs qualify so please take the time to complete the paper-

work.

The selection committee will meet on Saturday30th April to choose the District Governor for

2013-2014. Clubs are asked to nominate worthy candidates by Friday 22nd April. Nomination

forms are available on the district website www.rotary9670.org.au or from PDG Greg Bevan.

I would like to sincerely thank all those individuals and clubs who have donated so generously

to the district flood/disaster appeal. The balance stands at over $35,000. We are in consultation

with Elders Rural Bank with the prospect of getting a dollar for dollar matching donation of up

From the desk of the Tim Holmes our District Attendance Officer, comes the figures from February.

.From the Editor’s Keyboard Welcome to the 9th (March) edition of the District Governor's Newsletter for 2010—2011. The first quarter of the year has now been almost wiped away from the calendar and this week end marks the opening of the Annual Conference at Dubbo, the ―Spirit of the Bush‖. To all those who have registered and are about to make their way towards Dubbo, I wish you a safe and enjoyable journey with the hope that you will be taking back wonderful memories of a great event. I shall be reporting on the conference and hopefully will be able to publish as many photos as I can manage in these spaces. Scott Jarman has reported the team from Shelterbox has been exceptionally busy with the tragic event in both New Zealand and the Northern areas of Hokaido in Japan. We have all seen the tragedies that unfolded on our very TV sets as we watched in horror as the massive tidal wave ripped through Sendai. We all send our very best wishes for the Shelterbox teams in their efforts to help out in these areas. Also included in this month’s edition is a flyer from ―Hat Day‖ and an invitation for RC Club of Newcastle Enterprise for the ―Farewell Function‖ for the GSE tour to West Texas and New Mexico. I hope that members can be as supportive as possible for these two functions. The Hat Day letter is available as a word document from the letter author, Dick White at Rotary Health. Yours in Rotary

Anna Bay woman's date with world's trouble spots By Anna Wolf of the Port Stephens Examiner

09 Mar, 2011 01:00 AM

WITH some form of wide-scale disaster occurring across the world every fortnight, it is little wonder there is a growing demand for

emergency supplies.

Anna Bay woman Lynn Jarman is set to become the first female in Australia to become a member of a unique team that goes in to

disaster zones immediately after they occur to deliver vital aid in the form of Shelter Boxes.

The boxes include a tent which is designed to be lived in for at least six months, ground sheets, tool kit, stove, pots, mosquito nets,

water filter and child activity packs among other things and are distributed to people directly affected by a disaster such as the Hai-

tian earthquake in 2010.

ShelterBox and its international affiliates have roughly 150 volunteers that go into such

areas, and following a lengthy selection process Mrs Jarman is about to become one of

them. She is off to Cornwall in the UK to train for nine days where she will live in condi-

tions similar to what she would see in a disaster zone.

"The training is quite intense, they try to recreate the same living arrangements as what

you would be living in when you go into an area," Mrs Jarman said.

Her involvement with the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay introduced her to ShelterBox,

which is largely funded by Rotary clubs across Australia as well as through donations

from the general public.

"My husband and I are part of the Rotary club and he was made the district representative

for ShelterBox," Mrs Jarman said.

To all Presidents &

Secretaries

Rotary District 9670,

Thank you for the numerous amount of emails and phone calls this past fortnight requesting

donation information with regard to ShelterBox and the current disasters happening around the world.

I have attached a donation form to this email that can be used and distributed by all. Additionally if any of your individual

members, local residents or local businesses require a tax receipt - please remember to tick the box located on the form just under

the return mailing address.

If you do donate to ShelterBox I encourage you to let your local media outlets know as this is a great chance to show your

community another aspect of what Rotary (and your club) does as illustrated in this attached newspaper report which has also now

been picked up by NBN News and Take Five Magazine http://www.portstephensexaminer.com.au/ (see below—Editor).

Having recently completed our deployment to Christchurch, ShelterBox has a team on the ground assessing the situation in Japan

and also has current active deployments delivering Shelterboxes to Peru, Bolivia and Madagascar. Australian ShelterBox Response

Team Members are present in both Japan (Lasse Peterson - Qld) and Madagascar (Peter Pearce - Rotary Club of North Gosford).

This week the Rotary club of Toronto also reached an Australian ShelterBox Milestone by being given Australian ShelterBox

number Ten Thousand (10,000) as part of their recent ten (10) box donation.

The ShelterBox Display will be available for all to see and ask questions on at this weekends District 9670 Conference.

Guest speakers are available for all clubs and the display itself can be delivered to any club for use in any fundraising or Rotary

publicity event.

Regards

Scott Jarman

Hat Day Newsletter - March

How do you feel about the war that Rotary is fighting to reduce the impact of mental illness? It is predicted that by 2020, Depression will be the main cause of disability - meaning lost days at work and inability to function in a family situation. Australian Rotary Health is possibly the biggest provider of funding for mental health research outside of governments. This Rotary year 140 applications were received by Australian Rotary Health for funding - only 12 new grants could be made. Rotary clubs have been magnificent in their support and funding - now we need the help of the community and business, if we are to be able to help more researchers before 2020. That's why we have planned Hat Day. What exactly is Hat Day meant to achieve? It is a day planned by Australian Rotary Health to raise awareness of Mental Health and as I have said, more particularly to raise funds to assist Mental Health Research. The aim is not to raise money from Rotarians and clubs whom we hope will continue to assist Australian Rotary Health by the ongoing annual donations made to Australian Rotary Health over the years. The aim of Hat Day is to raise money from the community.

How can your club assist? We hope you will nominate a member of your club to be your club's Hat Day "Champion". This should be a person with a passion for what we are trying to achieve. Very few of us have not been affected by a relation or friend who has suffered from mental ill health and in all probability the person we are after will be in that situation. We have made an arrangement for individual donations to be made via any branch of St George Bank, directly on the ARH website or in the envelope we will provide later. However it is suggested that you emphasise the procedure indicated in your President or "Champion's" letter to the organisation, which is: "Once the Hat Day event has concluded collect and amalgamate all donations, (those from staff and customers). Your company may wish to add a donation to this amount. Either write a cheque or deliver the total donation to our club treasurer: (provide the Treasurer's name and address details). Our Treasurer will forward this to Australian Rotary Health." Our first "Champion" was Luciano Vranich, a non Rotarian and ex-teacher who heard Australian of the Year 2010 Patrick McGorry speak at an Australian Rotary Health Dinner in December. Completely impressed and inspired by Patrick, Luciano got up the next morning determined to do his bit in support of the cause of Mental Health Research. Luciano marched down to the local shopping centre and asked his bank manager to have the staff hold a morning tea and for them to wear hats and pay a fee for the opportunity to do so. Next he went to a major chain of office equipment and obtained the project manager's agreement to approach head office about circulating their whole network of stores. The local paper was next, followed by the library - all expressed great interest in holding a Hat Day function. Luciano is not a man to stop there, his list to contact includes the council, local politicians, chamber of commerce, photography clubs throughout Australia plus all those enrolled at the University of the Third Age where he lectures in photography. Hats off to Luciano!

Ambassadors: Professor Patrick McGorry John Brogden Michael Klim

Danny Green Kate Hollywood John Konrads

Lisa Sthalekar

If your "Champion" would prefer to write to similar organisations we have included a draft of a letter that they might like to use. Now what is happening so far in the run up to Hat Day?

The Sydney districts will be involved with the attempt to set a record for the most paper hats in one place. This will be attempted in Martin Place. Does your district or club want to part of this and perhaps we could set a record for one country on the one day. We have been able to some Sydney radio stations to help with publicity. Channel 9 hopes to have the weather crosses to Martin Place.

In Adelaide they hope to use community radio and Community Service Announcements to spread their message. Western Australia is planning to use the RedWave radio stations - RED FM, WAfm and Spirit.

Have you noticed our Hat Day Ambassadors? These well known people have been enthusiastic about Hat Day. We have the Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir and the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Peter Underwood agree to be Patrons of Hat Day. We have the Red Hats Ladies express interested in being involved - a great fit don't you think?

The District 9710 ARH Rep. Helen Jessop has come up with the following - Some ideas for a Hat Day project in your Rotary Club:

Hard Hats - focus on mental health safety in the workplace. It's good to care.

Mad as a Hatter - Dress to impress from your favourite children's story. Hats for Happiness - Inviting aged care facility residents to wear hats for a day. Chamber Hats - A Chamber of Commerce joint Hat Day project with your Club and the not-

for-profit community. Helping those in vocations with special needs. Hear My Hat - Hat Day radio interviews with your local ABC, community radio and

commercial radio. Spread the news, mental health is fun! Hats in the Streets - Asking retailers to show special hats in their windows with counter

donation boxes. Mental health is a journey not a sentence. History Hats - Feature prominent historical town figures characters in the newspaper for Hat

Day. Hats with Heart - inviting local artists to create works, events, ideas, chalk the pavement.

What is mental health? School Hats - Have hat will play students can find out about great science figures in history

who have worn hats. What if it was you? I've HatIT - Support through Facebook and Twitter to help promote Hat Day - Like, Share and

Tweet Hat Day on Facebook and Twitter. Social networks of support for mental health.

To finish, here are some photos from some Rotary Hat Meetings. Please hold a meeting and see what fun they can be. If you do hold one, please send me some photos.

Draft letter for use of club "Champion" or President Dear (NAME),

RE: HAT DAY

I write to you as a President of the Rotary Club of (XYZ) to tell you about Australian Rotary Health - an outstanding Rotary program that will celebrate 30 Years of service next August. This program has led the way as the largest Non Government organisation providing funding for mental health research within Australia. ARH has undertaken successful research into S.I.D.S., Suicide, Alzheimer's and numerous other illnesses through all the major Universities within Australia. The Australian Government has worked in conjunction with us to fund mental health awareness community forums over several years that have helped to reduce the stigma commonly associated with mental illness. We recently ran The Great Australian Bike Ride around Australia to create awareness of mental health issues and this was voted the Fund Raising Event of the year 2010 in NSW. Now we are planning another event - HAT DAY - which is scheduled for May 20th 2011 and the concept is simple, we seek your support in the following ways:

1. 2. 3.

If your company can arrange for printing and distribution of flyers and hat stickers to all job sites wishing to participate. We can provide design and art work or see www.australianrotaryhealth.org.au All staff and on site personnel could participate in the event by wearing a hat and offering a donation that would be directed to Australian Rotary Health for Mental Health Research. Collection buckets or boxes would be placed in convenient locations (near check outs or exits) into which customers could drop donations. Promotional material such as brochures for HATDAY could be placed close by. Prior advertising of the day would assist the success of the day.

If you could assist us by passing this proposal around all your interstate offices that would be appreciated as we envisage this to be a nationwide annual program.

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me on (YOUR TELEPHONE NUMBER) Yours sincerely
