DISTRICT YOUTH SERVICEDistrict 5220 Rotary YouthExchange 2016

Just a quick note to let you all know we had avery successful Youth Exchange in our Districtand the German Students were such a delight toshow off to our wonderful district.

This year we had five American Students (twoboys and three girls) head to Germany on July4th.

They stayed with their German host students’ andparents’ home for three weeks. They got to visitcountries like Switzerland, Austria, France, and Italy, and some of them got to attend a Germany/FranceInternational Soccer (Football) game. They got to goto Porsche and Mercedes Museums, they got to hangout at a German High School, but by far their bestexperience was to hang out with a German family.

And then they brought their German counterparthome with them for three weeks. This year we hosted10 German Students (7 girls and 3 boys). All werewonderful ambassadors of their home country and ofRotary. All spoke wonderful English and some spoke three, four, or five languages. Truly amazing. We got entertainedby them with their piano-playing skills and their cookingskills. They actually got most of my Kiwi humor and evengave a little back to me!J

We had a farewell party for them and saw them back on theplane back to Germany on August 15th.

Tears were shed, but memories, experiences and life-longfriendships were made.Thank you to all who helped make this experience for our German friends a memorable one. From ErikJohnson and the Sonora 49rs, to the host parents, to the Yosemite Chaperones and to Modesto SunriseRotary Club. So many of our District support this great program, I hope we can get you and your clubinvolved for next year.

If you do, please contact Chris Currie, 209-652-5976, [email protected]. Next year’s program willstart on Wednesday July 5th, when we send our American Students aged 15yrs-19yrs to German for 3weeks, then we welcome home our American Students and host the German Students from July 26ththrough to August 16th. We are looking for American Students and Host families alike.

CLUB ACTIVITIESModesto Rotarians Bring Clean Water to the Dominican Republic

MoRotarian Lance Lowell just returned froman amazing project trip to the DominicanRepublic.

In his words: “For the past few years a groupof people from our church congregation havebeen traveling to San Cristobal, DominicanRepublic to work with an orphanage. Thepast two years we became aware of a refugeecamp that is home to 330 families who weredisplaced by earthquakes, tsunamis andpoverty. As we went through the village oneof the greatest needs that we saw was theneed for clean drinking water. Althoughpoverty, hunger and employment are allthings that are common struggles for many ofthe 3rd world impoverished areas like this one, their access to clean drinking water that won’t make themsick and even potentially cause death is at the top of the list.

“I received approval to receive a club grant of $5,000 and almost $2,000 of matching district funds, combined with money I was able to raise from Neighborhood Church and a small family foundation thatawarded us a grant, and we raised over $17,000 to buy 280 water pots and mosquito nets for each familyin the village who did not already have one. Each water pot will provide clean water for a family of 4 ormore for up to 7 years. And the mosquito nets will help provide protection through the night frommosquitos that carry malaria, the Zika virus, and other harmful diseases. This was an amazing, life-changing experience for me.”

CLUB ACTIVITIESSonora Supports Adults with Disabilities with iPad Donations

July 6, 2016 at 2:30pm the Sonora Rotaryclub donated 13 iPads to the WATCHprogram in Sonora, California.

Founded in 1972, the WATCH programsupports adults with intellectual disabilitiesto live, work and play as integral members ofthe community. Services are located inTuolumne and Calaveras Counties,California, USA. About 5 years ago WATCHreceived a grant to purchase desktopcomputers for its computer lab. SonoraRotary had the opportunity to tour theSonora WATCH facility in March 2016, andobserved that all computers were being used for various educational pursuits.

In discussion with Chris Daly, Executive Director of WATCH, the club determined that iPads would be awonderful resource for the educational pursuits of the WATCH consumers. There are numerous newprograms (Apps) that provide spelling, mathematic, communication, and life skill learning opportunitiesthat are designed for individuals with special needs. Also, the iPads could offer functionality toconsumers that could not operate a mouse or keyboard.

The Sonora Rotary club then went to work to procure the required iPads for the WATCH program. TheClub funded the project from private donations combined with a club donation using proceeds from itsMay golf tournament fundraiser.

CLUB ACTIVITIESThe Chowchilla – Jamaica Connection

For almost 25 years, the Rotary Club of Chowchilla hasbeen helping the severely impoverished of Jamaica.Although many people accept the stereotype of a “Day-O”and “Yah Mon” Jamaica, many Jamaicans live in abjectcircumstances.

The connection began with a program at Chowchilla Rotaryby a native Jamaican and recently retired Stanfordadministrator who graphically described the devastation tothe island by Hurricane Gilbert, particularly to the schools.Local school superintendent and Rotarian Dr. Ron Moorerallied schools in the area to donate some 2,500 usedtextbooks, library books, manual typewriters, and resourcematerials for the schools. Rotarians in Fresno arrangedtransportation to New Orleans where Rotarians arrangedfor shipment in cargo containers to Jamaica. A few yearslater, Chowchilla Rotary sponsored a clothing drive forvictims of Hurricane Ivan.

After partnering with the East Montego Bay Rotary Club,Moore and his wife Shirley began bi-annual trips toJamaica to coordinate projects including mattresses for theChildren’s School for the Deaf, upgrading the Flanker’s Health Clinic, roofing for a pre-school, a retainingwall for a K-2 school, and a wheelchair project. In recent years, Chowchilla Rotary and District 5220succeeded in obtaining RI grants for security and fencing for a boys’ and girls’ club and 24 latrines forfamilies in remote areas without electricity and running water. The current project involves upgradingthe equipment in a maternity ward in a hospital south of Ocho Rios. In June Ron and Shirley presented acheck in the amount of US $10,500 to the East Montego Bay Rotary for the project.

CLUB ACTIVITIESTurlock Honors Vladimir Donskoy

Several longtime Turlock Rotarians have honored VladimirDonsky with a Paul Harris Fellow Award. Donsky has had atremendous impact on the development of Rotary inRussia, and Turlock Rotary has been a big part of it.

Vladimir was a professor of English at the State Universityof Irkutsk in Siberia, when he was selected in 1987 toparticipate in a 10-week exchange for ten Soviet universityinstructors by American Field Service (AFS). He stayed inTurlock with a host family and served as a guest lecturer at TurlockHigh School.

Denton Palmer, a member of the Rotary Club of Turlock, invitedhim to one of our club's weekly meetings. Vladimir wasimmediately fascinated with Rotary, as service clubs andvolunteerism were totally unknown in the Soviet Union. He visitedour club often during that stay and developed close friendshipswith several of our members. After his return to Russia he becamea co-founder of Rotary in Irkutsk, a sister city of Eugene, Oregonwhose Rotarians encouraged them to form a Rotary club.

In 1991, Turlock Rotary and District 5220 provided funding for Vladimir to again visit Turlock for 10weeks, this time to become more familiar with Rotary in order to help with its growth & development inRussia. Vladimir stayed with local Rotarians and attended dozens of Rotary club meetings, boardmeetings, and District events.

He returned to Russia as its leading expert on Rotary, having developed a better understanding &appreciation of it. Shortly after his return, he became secretary of his Rotary club — and later president. He also provided assistance and information to other emerging clubs in Russia, including authoringRotary manuals in the Russian language.

In 1992, with the assistance of Professor Linda Bunney-Sarhad, Vladimir returned to Turlock for a thirdvisit, this time with his wife and daughter — for the entire academic year as a Fullbright Scholar inResidence at CSU Stanislaus. In addition to teaching classes at CSUS, he used this opportunity to furtherimprove his knowledge of Rotary by visiting and speaking to numerous clubs in California and Oregon.

Upon his return to Siberia, Vladimir played an increasing role in the growth and development of Rotaryin Russia. From 1993 - 2003 he was designated as the deputy district governor for District 5010 — whichat that time included Alaska, The Yukon and all of Eastern Russia. In that role he helped to form andnurture most of the Rotary clubs in Siberia and Eastern Russia.

In 2004 he became the first Russian to serve as a Rotary District Governor. Since then, Vladimir Donskoyhas become one of the best known and most active Rotarians in the world. He has attended and spoken atnumerous Rotary events in several different countries. And it all started with a simple invitation fromDenton Palmer to attend a weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Turlock.

CLUB ACTIVITIESHope Haven West and Rotary District 5220 Travel to Vietnam

Late July and early August found Rotarians from our district workingdiligently in the heat and humidity of Danang, Vietnam. Lonny Davis,(and his wife Lisa) and Robert Wallace (and his brother Bill) fromCeres Rotary, Doctor Joe Serra and Doctor Cathy Peterson fromStockton Rotary, Judy Spencer, widow of Ceres Rotarian Paul Spencer, and Expert Seating Specialist Cathy Mulholland made the 24 hourjourney to bring the gift of mobility to the disabled poor of Vietnam.

Though most Hope Haven West distributions include up to 20volunteers and seating specialists, this team was kept small due thedistance and the fact that this was Hope Haven West’s first distributionin Vietnam. Everything went smoothly, and the possibility for a futuredistribution is anticipated.

The World Health Organization estimates that 65 millionpeople in the world are in need of a wheelchair. During thisdistribution, two hundred individuals, most of them children, received custom fitted wheelchairs during the three daydistribution. “We found the people of Vietnam to be verykind, humble and welcoming people. To be able to give thegift of mobility to them was very rewarding,” stated RobertWallace. “They were so grateful to receive a wheelchair as intheir country pediatric wheelchairs are almost impossible tocome by.

Hope Haven West (a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization) is a100% model charity. Every dollar donated goes directly toprovide mobility to the disabled poor in the developing world. All administrative and fund raising expenses are provided byprivate benefactors. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to partnerin a distribution, either through a cash donation, through useof their District Designated Funding, by participating as ateam member in a distribution, or by volunteering in theHope Haven West warehouse in Modesto to assemblepediatric wheelchairs.

Several distributions are planned in the near future.Openings for team members are available for Lima Peru inmid-September, and Ecuador in October. Interested partiesshould contact Liz Hosmer at [email protected] formore information.

CLUB ACTIVITIESEscalon Sunrise August Activities

August was a busy month for Escalon Sunrise Rotary with avocational tour, a global grant presentation, and the DG’sannual visit. Almonds are a major product for Escalon, asthey are for most of the Central Valley, and club memberswere able to tour a brand new processing facility.Vocational Chair John Weeks arranged for a visit to theRojas Brothers facility and members were able to see whatgoes on during the entire process from nuts off the tree tofinished commercial products. The club was able to see theplant just before it goes into full production with theupcoming harvesting season.

Next up was a presentation by Liz Armstrong of the Angels-Murphys Rotary. She explained that the global grant wouldprovide informational meetings and training for medicalstaff on detecting breast cancer. For a variety of reasons—some environmental, some societal, and some religious—Palestine has a very large incidence of breast cancer, andbecause it is only detected late in the process, a very highincidence of death resulting from cancer. Liz is workingwith a U.S. organization doing work in Palestine to create asystem by which early detection will become the norm.

After that, Escalon received its official visit from DistrictGovernor Tia Saletta. Tia, as a member of Oakdale Rotary, told us she considered Escalon her second club because shehas made up so often with the club, including her very firstmake-up. Tia was introduced by club member andAssistant Governor Jordon Freitas and shared some of herinternational experiences and her goals for the year. Inaddition, she made some presentations to club members, including the Silent Rotarian award to John Weeks, theRotarian All-Star Award to Andreas Witt, and the RotaryAvenues of Service Award to Romy Damiles. CLUB ACTIVITIESLetter to the Lodi News Sentinel: Lodi Club Delivers Clothing, Message ofGenerosity(From the Lodi News Sentinel, posted: Wednesday, August 17, 2016)

I am preparing to go on a trip to help an orphanage in Ethiopia. When I asked what I could bring, I wastold that each orphan receives a new outfit for their birthday.

I was given a list of children along with their sizes.

I presented the need to my Lodi Rotary Club, and club President Sherry Cotta jumped at the opportunity(if you don’t know Sherry, she is a “go-getter” with a heart of gold). She made it a point to not only collectthe outfits that were requested but so much more. I will be heading to Ethiopia with two luggage bagsfilled with vacuum packed clothes (courtesy of Sherry) filled with the following items: 65 pairs of pants, 14pairs of shorts, 58 shirts, 10 dresses, 4 skirts, 153 pairs of socks, 95 pairs of underwear, 28 pairs of shoes, jelly beans, school supplies, and additional money for the orphanage.

In a chaotic world that can be filled with negative things that attempt to capture our attention, I would liketo shed light on the goodness that has come out of ourcommunity. The Lodi Rotary Club bought these clothesout of the kindness of their hearts. And I am thankful.Thankful for a group of people who sacrificed their timeand money to bless children whom they have never met.

On behalf of all the little children who will be receivingnew clothes in Ethiopia, I would like to thank themembers of Lodi Rotary and Sherry Cotta.
