Re: Beverly Manor School & John L. Hensey School – Lead in Drinking Water Notification
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff Members,
The safety of students and staff is our top priority. When news of lead found in drinking water in Galesburg Schools was first reported during the 2015-2016 school year, our district contracted with Ideal Environmental Engineering (IDEAL) to test drinking fountains at both of our schools during the summer of 2016. Analysis from all samples taken at both buildings reported “none detected” for lead in water.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends schools take action to mitigate lead in water when detection levels test at 20 parts per billion (ppb). Under a new Illinois lead in water testing law (Public Act 99-922), the mitigation requirement set by the state is significantly more stringent, requiring parent notification when lead in water levels exceed 5 ppb and mitigation for any source exceeding 2 ppb. Our district contracted with IDEAL to perform water testing at both schools this fall to comply with the stricter testing standards contained in Public Act 99-22.
Samples were taken from all drinking fountains and sinks at both buildings. A “first draw” sample was taken from each source after water had sat in the lines for an entire weekend. A second “flush” sample was taken after running water (flushing) at each source for 30 seconds.
The following is notification for sample results, from Beverly Manor School, found to contain lead levels exceeding 5 ppb. It is important to note that second samples, taken after flushing the locations listed below for 30 seconds, found no lead detected.

The following is notification for sample results, from John L. Hensey School, found to contain lead levels exceeding 5 ppb. It is important to note that second samples, taken after flushing the locations listed below for 30 seconds, resulted in no detection or a significant reduction below 5 ppb.
Sample Location Description Fixture Type Concentration Kitchen Sink – Right
KS - Kitchen Sink
First Draw – 7.12 ppb After Flush - None Detected
Hall by Room 2 - kindergarten wing
DF - Drinking Fountain
First Draw – 8.71 ppb After Flush – 4.19 ppb
All sample results for both buildings and maps of both buildings containing room numbers are included with this letter for your review.
Mitigation and water management are in progress at both buildings. Please be assured that we will continue to take all action necessary to protect the health of students and staff members including the steps listed below.
1. Water fountains testing above 2 ppb have been shut off. In total, these include six (6) drinking fountains at Beverly Manor School and four (4) drinking fountains at John L. Hensey School. Three of the six drinking fountains testing above 2 ppb at Beverly Manor School are original porcelain fountains, which have been shut off and will be removed during holiday break. The other three fountains testing above 2 ppb at Beverly Manor will remain shut off, then properly mitigated and retested before returning to service. All four drinking fountains testing above 2 ppb at John L. Hensey School have been shut off. All four are original porcelain fountains which have been shut off and will be removed during holiday break along with one other porcelain fountain that showed “None Detected” for lead in water. An adequate number of drinking fountains at both buildings remain in operation to serve the needs of students. As always, students may bring their own water bottles to school.
2. We have a water management plan in place that assures water sources (drinking fountains and sinks) are flushed for a minimum of 30 seconds prior to the start of each school day and for a longer period of time following weekends and school breaks. Although sinks in each kitchen, teacher lounges and the John L. Hensey Nurse’s Office showed no lead in water from second samples taken after running water for 30 seconds, they will only be used for washing hands and/or dishes until follow-up testing is completed in January. Water coolers are available to provide drinking water for staff in each building office and teacher lounges.
3. As always, we continue to invite students and staff to bring their own water bottles to school.
Again, we would like to assure parents that the safety of students and staff is our top priority. The risk to an individual child from exposure to lead in drinking water depends on many factors, including the amount of lead in the water, the frequency, duration, and dose of the exposure(s), and individual susceptibility factors (e.g., age, weight, previous exposure history, nutrition, and health). In addition, the degree of harm depends on one’s total exposure to lead from all sources in the environment - air, soil, dust, food and water. Parents/guardians who are concerned that their child is displaying symptoms consistent with elevated levels of lead should contact their healthcare provider.
For information about lead in drinking water, visit the USEPA website at: www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/basic-information-about-lead-drinking-water.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 309-745-8914.
Sincerely,
Chad Allaman, Superintendent
