NEW BOOK ON THE TETON VALLEY OF IDAHO AND WYOMINGA passion for wide, open spaces inspired Eric I. Soyland to publish a collection of his photographs and writings on the majestic Teton Valley of Idaho and Wyoming.

Written from the point of view of a wagon master journeying with settlers to the area from Utah and Idaho Territory in 1887 and then returning more than 100 years later, Our Land, Our Soul: Majestic Teton Valley—The Tetons’ Western Slope features 102 color photographs as well as Eric’s poetry and prose and celebrates the rare beauty of the region. “For those who love her, Teton Valley truly is our land, our soul,” he says.

Eric has resided in the Teton Valley for thirty-three years. He began the conceptualization and photography for the medium-format hardcover photography book twelve years ago.

“This is indeed a legacy book,” Eric says. “A book not only for today but with a blueprint for tomorrow. A book truly for generations to come.”

This is the first book devoted solely to the Teton’s western slope, Eric indicates, and it was a true labor of love.

“The western slope of the Tetons is a special place in the hearts of many, including the Native tribes, early mountain men, and Mormon settlers of the 1800s and early 1900s,” he says.

Eric wrote the text from the point of view of a wagon master because he was intrigued by what the early settlers felt when they saw this magnificent valley for the first time, and what they might think could they return in 2011.

He writes of the Tetons: “A peak so imposing, so Grand as to dominate the sky itself and, yes, surrounding that grand

mountain will be three others of lesser size, brothers of the Grand one and there, at their feet will be spread the tablecloth of dreams and hopes come true.”

Eric says his goal is to inspire others to protect the landscape and the wildlife that inhabits it so that in another hundred years, and for generations to come, this magical place will remain unchanged.

“My main message is one of conservation,” he says. “I want people to examine their thoughts, their priorities—to appreciate and protect nature’s grandeur that exists every day within their midst, for life is short. We must enjoy each moment.”

Our Land, Our Soul is available at local bookstores and gift shops, through online retailers, or from distributor Farcountry Press at 1.800.821.3874, www.farcountrypress.com.

From a wagonmasters’ diary—1887 or thereabouts.

The settling of Teton Valley, Idaho and Wyoming.

Long and hard, that journey to

paradise, so long, long ago and

yet, and yet, faith and a heartfelt

knowing drove them on.

Up through Utah territory, the

wagon trains came – North to

Idaho, then East out of Rexburg.

So many wagons, so many men, women, children, dogs and horses – some with a

cow even – carrying dreams and hopes on a wagon, day after day, after dusty day.
