SYNOPSIS REVIVAL is the story of four musicians whose rock group split up for unclear reasons in 1972 and who – each for a different reason – have decided to attempt a spectacular comeback. It’s a humorous film about getting old, but pursuing your desires and ambitions all the same. And it’s also a slightly sad film about friendship that tries to overcome all the injustices and unresolved problems that accumulate over the years. The first impulse comes from keyboard player Milan, for whom this project is a desperate attempt to save his debt-‐ridden recording studio and his financially, physically and mentally exhausting marriage to the young Ivanka. Vaclav, now a school music teacher and small-‐time folk signer, is the first band member Milan talks round. Vaclav’s wife, who basically got the band together, died recently, and he sees the revival as a kind of homage to her. Persuading the other band members is more difficult – in the end Holubec, a producer who is also in dire straits financially, comes up with the lie that Vaclav is terminally ill and the revival is basically a way to make his last days more enjoyable. Of course, Vaclav is kept in the dark about this emotional blackmail, but as he really does not look too good, nobody asks too many questions and everyone keeps tactfully quiet about his impending death. The frontman Otakar, who has spent the last forty years as a non-‐conformist theatre stagehand and, later, a composer of theatre music, seems shaken by the news about Vaclav’s illness and immediately agrees to the revival. Though the prospect of fresh supplies of young girls and new drugs is also a key factor for him. Another motivation is that this is a good way to take belated revenge on Yvonne – the woman who purportedly caused the band to split up years ago and has monopolised the final surviving band member, Karel, for the last forty years. Karel takes the longest time to come round to the idea, but in the end he too gets on-‐board. Since he has spent the last forty years with the untalented but highly ambitious Yvonne, accompanying her on the Tibetan cymbals as they record new-‐age music and being dragged round Czech cultural centres abroad as a phony dissident, the prospect of some real music is something for which he is willing to risk a schism with his very own Czech Yoko Ono. The journey from rehearsals to the first provincial gigs and the final promised mega-‐concert is far from straightforward. It would be hard to claim that the expectations of the band members – and of the leeches who want to make some money out of them – are fully realised. And of course, like most lies, the lie about Vaclav’s terminal illness comes out in the end, and the producer’s scams get the band into unexpected situations. But like any other journey, it’s not the destination but the getting there that counts. It is a journey on which Karel at last finds the courage to send Yvonne packing, Milan discovers that some things really aren’t worth saving, Vaclav realises that, despite all appearances, his son – a famous pop singer who has been ashamed of his folk singing father for years – does actually love him, and Otakar, who unlike Vaclav is genuinely dying, gets a last chance to really rock and even enjoys a relationship with a younger, though not all that young, fan. And on top of all that, they finally resolve one big misunderstanding – why the band actually split up back in 1972.
Distribution sheet genre: comedy running time: 116 minutes It’s never over. Revival is a new comedy by Alice Nellis packed with music and humour, a comedy for men, women and everyone else besides. In the film, Bolek Polivka, Miroslav Krobot, Karel Hermanek and Marian Geisberg play a bunch of friends whose rock group split up in 1972 and who decide to attempt a spectacular comeback. Each has his own reasons and his own set of personal problems. It is not just the band’s return to the stage and the associated hi-‐jinks that are at the heart of the story, but the lives of all the band members. Revival also features the actors Zuzana Bydzovska, Vojta Dyk, Jenovefa Bokova and Richard Genzer. “Revival is a comedy about rock and roll and a scam that turns out wonderfully when it fails to come off,” says the director Alice Nellis. “Go out with a bang…” Smoke were like the Czech Rolling Stones. But for reasons that are unclear they split up in 1972 and each band member found his own way of coping with the destiny of a retired rocker. Each has his own story to tell. Their motivations for getting Smoke back together are also different – a need for money, a longing for lost fame, a desire to help a friend, or just a last chance to rock. They get back together and once again start enjoying their music, friendship and life onstage and backstage. They and all those around them will have a lot of fun, getting into surprising and comic situations. And they even manage to resolve one big mystery – why the band actually split up. Alice Nellis is one of the few contemporary Czech filmmakers whose new films arouse high expectations. And she has never disappointed – her comedies are a rare mixture of critical praise and laughter in packed cinemas. Alice Nellis’s last film Perfect Days was seen by over 250,000 people in Czech cinemas. “We are worse than you think.” The film band Smoke has the following line-‐up: Miroslav Krobot on guitar, Bolek Polivka on bass, Karel Hermanek at the keyboards and Marian Geisberg on lead vocals. A band stands or falls by its songs. All the songs in Smoke’s repertoire are original and were composed for the film by Jan Ponocny, alias Cirkus Ponorka. What’s more, he played the part of the band’s new drummer with an interesting handicap. Revival was produced by Rudolf Biermann and In Film, with Czech Television and RWE as co-‐producers. Distribution by Bontonfilm. A book and soundtrack will also accompany the film.
