Welcome to the 2010 College of Science Distinguished Alumni Awards

ceremony

This year we are honoring 10 accomplished members of the Purdue

Science alumni family whose contributions truly stand out These

Purdue scientists have had a big impact mdash and not just on their

scientific disciplines They have changed the world

The College of Science has many prominent alumni mdash this group

proves it The words displayed on the cover of this program mdash

innovators leaders advocates mdash are but just a few of the outstanding

attributes seen in the diverse group we are honoring today

One of my goals for the college is to create a culture where students

donrsquot just become experts in their particular scientific discipline but

they also learn how that discipline interrelates and connects to other

sciences and to society as a whole After all we have grand challenges

to solve Each of these honorees embodies that idea perfectly and I am

proud to join you in celebrating their achievements

North America in Atlanta Her work involves collaboration

with leading scientists policy makers and opinion leaders

regarding obesity and active lifestyle issues and development of con-

sumer and employee messaging and advertising regarding Coca-Colarsquos

products and community involvement

Bottorff started her career at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

where she worked in accelerator operations She also worked for consulting

giant McKinsey amp Company where she focused on technology and

marketing practice groups In addition she has served as the senior vice

president of strategy and marketing for AHL Services Inc marketing

director for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and director of global planning

for Intercontinental Hotels

She is a board member for Caraustar Industries HireDynamics

Prior to being selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA Andrew J

Feustel worked as a geophysicist for the Engineering Seismology

Group installing and operating micro seismic monitoring

equipment He began working for the Exxon Mobil Exploration Company

in 1997 as an exploration geophysicist

Feustel began training for his first NASA mission in August 2000

He served on the crew of STS-125 Atlantis the final space shuttle mission

to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009 The mission extended and

improved the observatoryrsquos capabilities through 2014 During his first

mission he logged nearly 13 days in space including 21 hours of

spacewalking

Currently he is assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International

Space Station During the mission planned for late July 2010 astronauts

Since 1987 David U Himmelberger has served as the CEO and

managing director of Health Outcomes Group an international

medical consulting group specializing in patient reported outcomes

quality of life and economic evaluation Before founding Health Outcomes

Group he worked at Syntex Corporation as director of Worldwide Market

Research and Strategic Planning He began his career as a biostatistician

at Stanford University Medical School

With 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry Himmelberger

has developed five quality of life questionnaires used in clinical trials

He also has managed and led the evaluation of a nationwide survey of

80000 healthcare professionals He has contributed to the studies of

quality of life smoking arthritis and competitive athletics

Thomas ldquoCurtisrdquo Holmes Jr is president and chief executive officer

of Texert Inc an early-stage software company With more

than 25 years of experience in the computer software industry

he began his career with ATampT and spent more than a decade with the

telecommunications giant holding positions from being a member of

the technical staff to the vice president of the Intelligent Network product

group

He then became president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc

where he led its transformation from a single-product North American-

based company to a multiproduct firm with customers and operations

worldwide Holmes also has served on the board of directors for Elanti

Systems and Tango Networks

Career highlights

Florence L Juillerat began her career in education more than 40

years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana

In 1966 she became a biology instructor at Indiana University

Purdue University at Indianapolis or IUPUI She later was appointed

professor emerita at IUPUI holding that position until she retired in

2004

She has received many awards for teaching and service including the

Indiana University Presidentrsquos Award for Teaching the Distinguished

Service Award from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers and

the Four Year College Biology Award for Excellence in Teaching from

the National Association of Biology Teachers She also developed two

award-winning biology correspondence courses for Indiana Universityrsquos

School of Continuing Studies and has served in multiple leadership

posts for teacher organizations

For 43 years William E Moore has been leading teaching

administration and research roles in higher education

Throughout his career he has served as the chief academic officer

at three institutions Most of his career has been spent at Southern

University Baton Rouge where he served as chemistry department chair

and was involved in curriculum innovation an interest he still holds

today

By serving on national boards and educational advisory committees

Moore has influenced higher education He was a charter member of

the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and a special

advisor to the pre-college programs in the National Center for Research

Resources at the National Institutes for Health He also has given an

invited lecture at Pasteur Institute in Paris France

A s a principal in the investment-banking firm of Grigsby

Brandford Powell Inc Arthur F Powell was responsible for

its marketing efforts in the eastern half of the United States

He also served as president and founder of AGH Financial Corporation

and has been associated with the Intel Corporation the Data Processing

Division of the IBM Corporation and the Missile and Space Division

of the General Electric Company Currently he is president and chief

executive officer of Powell Capital Markets Inc a firm he founded

Powell also is involved in many civic and professional organizations

such as the Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union

Jointure Commission He was the vice chair and founder of the New

Jersey Development Authority for Small Business Minorities and

Womenrsquos Enterprises and a former member of the South Carolina State

University Board of Visitors

For more than 40 years Edward R Shugart has been in the insurance

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corporation

In 1982 he partnered with WH Odell to form a consulting firm

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

was issuing nearly 1000 universal life policies per month Currently he

is vice president of Actuarial Management Resources Inc in Winston-

Salem North Carolina

Welcome to the 2010 College of Science Distinguished Alumni Awards

ceremony

This year we are honoring 10 accomplished members of the Purdue

Science alumni family whose contributions truly stand out These

Purdue scientists have had a big impact mdash and not just on their

scientific disciplines They have changed the world

The College of Science has many prominent alumni mdash this group

proves it The words displayed on the cover of this program mdash

innovators leaders advocates mdash are but just a few of the outstanding

attributes seen in the diverse group we are honoring today

One of my goals for the college is to create a culture where students

donrsquot just become experts in their particular scientific discipline but

they also learn how that discipline interrelates and connects to other

sciences and to society as a whole After all we have grand challenges

to solve Each of these honorees embodies that idea perfectly and I am

regarding obesity and active lifestyle issues and development of con-

sumer and employee messaging and advertising regarding Coca-Colarsquos

products and community involvement

Bottorff started her career at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

where she worked in accelerator operations She also worked for consulting

giant McKinsey amp Company where she focused on technology and

marketing practice groups In addition she has served as the senior vice

president of strategy and marketing for AHL Services Inc marketing

director for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and director of global planning

for Intercontinental Hotels

She is a board member for Caraustar Industries HireDynamics

Prior to being selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA Andrew J

Feustel worked as a geophysicist for the Engineering Seismology

Group installing and operating micro seismic monitoring

equipment He began working for the Exxon Mobil Exploration Company

in 1997 as an exploration geophysicist

Feustel began training for his first NASA mission in August 2000

He served on the crew of STS-125 Atlantis the final space shuttle mission

to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009 The mission extended and

improved the observatoryrsquos capabilities through 2014 During his first

mission he logged nearly 13 days in space including 21 hours of

spacewalking

Currently he is assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International

Space Station During the mission planned for late July 2010 astronauts

Since 1987 David U Himmelberger has served as the CEO and

managing director of Health Outcomes Group an international

medical consulting group specializing in patient reported outcomes

quality of life and economic evaluation Before founding Health Outcomes

Group he worked at Syntex Corporation as director of Worldwide Market

Research and Strategic Planning He began his career as a biostatistician

at Stanford University Medical School

With 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry Himmelberger

has developed five quality of life questionnaires used in clinical trials

He also has managed and led the evaluation of a nationwide survey of

80000 healthcare professionals He has contributed to the studies of

quality of life smoking arthritis and competitive athletics

of Texert Inc an early-stage software company With more

than 25 years of experience in the computer software industry

he began his career with ATampT and spent more than a decade with the

telecommunications giant holding positions from being a member of

the technical staff to the vice president of the Intelligent Network product

group

He then became president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc

where he led its transformation from a single-product North American-

based company to a multiproduct firm with customers and operations

worldwide Holmes also has served on the board of directors for Elanti

Systems and Tango Networks

Career highlights

Florence L Juillerat began her career in education more than 40

years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana

In 1966 she became a biology instructor at Indiana University

Purdue University at Indianapolis or IUPUI She later was appointed

professor emerita at IUPUI holding that position until she retired in

2004

She has received many awards for teaching and service including the

Indiana University Presidentrsquos Award for Teaching the Distinguished

Service Award from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers and

the Four Year College Biology Award for Excellence in Teaching from

the National Association of Biology Teachers She also developed two

award-winning biology correspondence courses for Indiana Universityrsquos

School of Continuing Studies and has served in multiple leadership

posts for teacher organizations

For 43 years William E Moore has been leading teaching

administration and research roles in higher education

Throughout his career he has served as the chief academic officer

at three institutions Most of his career has been spent at Southern

University Baton Rouge where he served as chemistry department chair

and was involved in curriculum innovation an interest he still holds

today

By serving on national boards and educational advisory committees

Moore has influenced higher education He was a charter member of

the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and a special

advisor to the pre-college programs in the National Center for Research

Resources at the National Institutes for Health He also has given an

invited lecture at Pasteur Institute in Paris France

A s a principal in the investment-banking firm of Grigsby

Brandford Powell Inc Arthur F Powell was responsible for

its marketing efforts in the eastern half of the United States

He also served as president and founder of AGH Financial Corporation

and has been associated with the Intel Corporation the Data Processing

Division of the IBM Corporation and the Missile and Space Division

of the General Electric Company Currently he is president and chief

executive officer of Powell Capital Markets Inc a firm he founded

Powell also is involved in many civic and professional organizations

such as the Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union

Jointure Commission He was the vice chair and founder of the New

Jersey Development Authority for Small Business Minorities and

For more than 40 years Edward R Shugart has been in the insurance

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corporation

In 1982 he partnered with WH Odell to form a consulting firm

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

was issuing nearly 1000 universal life policies per month Currently he

is vice president of Actuarial Management Resources Inc in Winston-

Salem North Carolina

Prior to being selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA Andrew J

Feustel worked as a geophysicist for the Engineering Seismology

Group installing and operating micro seismic monitoring

equipment He began working for the Exxon Mobil Exploration Company

in 1997 as an exploration geophysicist

Feustel began training for his first NASA mission in August 2000

He served on the crew of STS-125 Atlantis the final space shuttle mission

to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009 The mission extended and

improved the observatoryrsquos capabilities through 2014 During his first

mission he logged nearly 13 days in space including 21 hours of

spacewalking

Currently he is assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International

Space Station During the mission planned for late July 2010 astronauts

Since 1987 David U Himmelberger has served as the CEO and

managing director of Health Outcomes Group an international

medical consulting group specializing in patient reported outcomes

quality of life and economic evaluation Before founding Health Outcomes

Group he worked at Syntex Corporation as director of Worldwide Market

Research and Strategic Planning He began his career as a biostatistician

at Stanford University Medical School

With 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry Himmelberger

has developed five quality of life questionnaires used in clinical trials

He also has managed and led the evaluation of a nationwide survey of

80000 healthcare professionals He has contributed to the studies of

quality of life smoking arthritis and competitive athletics

than 25 years of experience in the computer software industry

He then became president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc

where he led its transformation from a single-product North American-

Florence L Juillerat began her career in education more than 40

years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana

In 1966 she became a biology instructor at Indiana University

Purdue University at Indianapolis or IUPUI She later was appointed

She has received many awards for teaching and service including the

Indiana University Presidentrsquos Award for Teaching the Distinguished

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

Prior to being selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA Andrew J

Feustel worked as a geophysicist for the Engineering Seismology

Group installing and operating micro seismic monitoring

equipment He began working for the Exxon Mobil Exploration Company

in 1997 as an exploration geophysicist

Feustel began training for his first NASA mission in August 2000

He served on the crew of STS-125 Atlantis the final space shuttle mission

to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009 The mission extended and

improved the observatoryrsquos capabilities through 2014 During his first

mission he logged nearly 13 days in space including 21 hours of

spacewalking

Currently he is assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International

Space Station During the mission planned for late July 2010 astronauts

Since 1987 David U Himmelberger has served as the CEO and

managing director of Health Outcomes Group an international

medical consulting group specializing in patient reported outcomes

quality of life and economic evaluation Before founding Health Outcomes

Group he worked at Syntex Corporation as director of Worldwide Market

Research and Strategic Planning He began his career as a biostatistician

at Stanford University Medical School

With 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry Himmelberger

has developed five quality of life questionnaires used in clinical trials

He also has managed and led the evaluation of a nationwide survey of

80000 healthcare professionals He has contributed to the studies of

quality of life smoking arthritis and competitive athletics

than 25 years of experience in the computer software industry

He then became president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc

where he led its transformation from a single-product North American-

Florence L Juillerat began her career in education more than 40

years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana

In 1966 she became a biology instructor at Indiana University

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corporation

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

the technical staff to the vice president of the Intelligent Network product

He then became president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc

where he led its transformation from a single-product North American-

based company to a multiproduct firm with customers and operations

worldwide Holmes also has served on the board of directors for Elanti

Florence L Juillerat began her career in education more than 40

years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana

In 1966 she became a biology instructor at Indiana University

Purdue University at Indianapolis or IUPUI She later was appointed

professor emerita at IUPUI holding that position until she retired in

She has received many awards for teaching and service including the

Indiana University Presidentrsquos Award for Teaching the Distinguished

Throughout his career he has served as the chief academic officer

at three institutions Most of his career has been spent at Southern

University Baton Rouge where he served as chemistry department chair

and was involved in curriculum innovation an interest he still holds

By serving on national boards and educational advisory committees

Moore has influenced higher education He was a charter member of

the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and a special

advisor to the pre-college programs in the National Center for Research

Resources at the National Institutes for Health He also has given an

For more than 40 years Edward R Shugart has been in the insurance

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corporation

In 1982 he partnered with WH Odell to form a consulting firm

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

was issuing nearly 1000 universal life policies per month Currently he

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

foundation for a satisfying and

rewarding career in actuarial

sciences This was a natural

choice once I realized that I did

not want to become a chemical

engineer like my stepfatherrdquo

Edward R Shugart III

For more than 40 years Edward R Shugart has been in the insurance

business He began his career at the Hartford Life Insurance

Company as an actuarial student and later was appointed senior

vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corporation

In 1982 he partnered with WH Odell to form a consulting firm

Eight years later Shugart joined the Investment Life Company of

America as president and chief operating officer helping build a viable

life insurance company from scratch Within two years the company

was issuing nearly 1000 universal life policies per month Currently he

is vice president of Actuarial Management Resources Inc in Winston-

Salem North Carolina

Career highlights

1990 Named President and Chief Operating Officer at Investment Life

1983 Became one of the first to develop and implement Universal Life products for various companies

1982 Named Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary of Integon Corporation

1968 Hired at The Hartford Life as an actuarial student
