En aquesta ocasió la Fundació Valvi ha apostat per fer un duet entre dos fotògrafs. M. Álvarez Diestro nascut a Santander el 1972 però amb la residència a Londres, va guanyar el primer accèssit en la última edició de video-creació del Festival del Cinema de Girona que organitza la mateixa Fundació amb el video sobre els cementiris de Hong-kong i que es podrà veure de nou a l’exposició. Per altra banda, Esteve Serra nascut a Tortellà el 1978 és un professional que ha publicat en revistes com Lonely Planet o Rutas del Mundo.

Distant Natures de Manuel Alvarez Diestro i Natural Mystic d’Esteve Serra ens mostren dues realitats oposades en la forma de viure. El primer fotògraf fa referència a la destrucció de l’entorn natural pel progrés a Egipte, Hong-Kong i Argèlia; el segon fa un retrat de les cultures ancestrals que miraculosament encara sobreviuen agermanades amb el seu entorn. Serra ens mostra pobles que viuen ancorats en el temps al marge de la globalització en front d’unes altres imatges d’Alvarez Diestro que ens parlen de la destrossa de la mà de l’home a la natura. Els dos fotògrafs són incansables viatges pels cinc continents, un amant de les urbs i els seus contrastos, l’altre enamorat dels últims habitants de la natura verge.

On this occasion, the Valvi Foundation has opted to have a duo of photographers, Manuel Álvarez Diestro, born in Santander in 1972 and currently a resident of London; and Esteve Serra Sabaté, born in Tortellá in 1978. Manuel Álvarez is the creator of Displacements, a documentary about the cemeteries of Hong Kong, which won first place in the video-creation category at the previous edition of the Girona Film Festival. The same festival organises this Foundation and the film can be seen once again at the exposition.  Esteve Serra is a professional photographer, having studied photography and digital creation in the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and has published articles in different travel magazines.

Álvarez and Serra present us with two opposing realities. If in Distant Nature, Álvarez shows us the environmental destruction that progress has provoked in Egypt, Hong Kong and Algeria, Serra, in Natural Mystic, presents us with a portrayal of the ancestral cultures that miraculously survive in symbiosis with their environment.

Álvarez’s images speak to us about the destruction of nature caused at the hands of man while those of Serra feature villages rooted in time, at the margin of globalisation. Both photographers are insatiable travellers who have travelled the five continents—one, a lover of urban landscapes and its contrasts, the other, enamoured with the last inhabitants of virgin nature.

Manuel Álvarez Diestro és un artista visual que treballa amb la fotografia i el cinema. El seu objectiu com a creador és explorar el lloc de l’ésser humà en el paisatge i en la ciutat.

Va iniciar-se en el món de la fotografia como a estudiant d’Història de l’Arte a Boston, Estats Units, on començaria a fotografiar els seus primers paisatges urbans.

Actualment està desenvolupant un nou projecte sobre l’Arquitectura Brutalista Anglesa. Al mateix temps, està acabant la seva nova pel·lícula sobre un monorail a Singapur.

Manuel Álvarez Diestro is a visual artist based in London working with photography and film. His main interest is to explore mankind place in the landscape and in the contemporary city.

He started with photography in his early twenties while studying art history in Boston, USA. He is currently working on a new photographic project about Brutalist Architecture in London. Also he just finished filming a new film about a monorail in Singapore.

Als 18 anys, a Esteve Serra una escapada a Àfrica li marca un punt d’inflexió en la manera de veure el món i les persones que l’envolten. Això el portarà a estudiar fotografia i creació digital a la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Ja graduat, comença a treballar en el món de la fotografia comercial per finançar-se els viatges que li permetran dedicar-se a la que a ell realment li agrada. Aquests últims quinze anys ha recorregut de forma independent països dels cinc continents cercant imatges que reflecteixin una mica el llegat cultural i antropològic que, inevitablement, està en constant evolució. Fruit d’aquestes experiències són una serie de reportatges i articles publicats en diverses revistes i mitjans digitals.

Natural mystic

There’s a natural mystic blowing though the air; if you listen carefully now you will hear, diu Bob Marley. La vida que afrontem tots i cadascun de nosaltres, una mística natural fluint per l’aire.

Esperar el moment en què la persona es troba desprevinguda, quan aflora en la mirada l’essència de l’ànima i les experiències viscudes. Per mi, els retrats transmeten un desig de relació humana, un desig tan fort que de vegades la gent, tot i pensar que potser no ens tornarem a veure, s’obre davant la càmera, esperant que algú l’observarà a l’altre costat. Un grapat d’imatges i rostres que no puc oblidar, miren fixament des de llocs que quasi no recordo. Tots representen relacions casuals en un món desconegut i convuls.

At the age of 18, a trip to Africa marked a turning point in Esteve Serra’s life, one that changed his manner of viewing the world and the people who inhabit it. As such, he would go on to study photography and digital creation at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Having graduated, he began to work in the world of commercial photography to finance his travels that allowed him to dedicate himself to what truly interested him. In these last 15 years, he has independently travelled to countries on the five continents searching for images that reflect a bit of the cultural and anthropologic legacy that, inevitably, is in constant evolution. The fruit of his labours is a series of reports and articles published in diverse magazines and digital media outlets.

Natural mystic

“There’s a natural mystic blowing through the air; if you listen carefully now you will hear,” says Bob Marley. The life that each and every one of us must face, like a natural mystic flowing through the air.

To wait for the moment when one is caught unaware, when the soul’s essence and experiences lived flower in one’s gaze. For me, pictures transmit a desire for human relationship, a desire so strong that sometimes people, even though they think that we won’t see, open themselves to the camera, hoping that someone observes them from the other side. A group of images and faces that I can’t forget gaze from places I barely remember. They all represent casual relationships in an unknown and unsettled world.
