Dependendo do
complexidade do problema.
aproximar as equações resultantes.

ABSTRACT
The present study is concerned with the numerical simulation of the ratcheting
behaviour of elasto-viscoplastic thin-walled pipes under internal pressure and
subjected to cyclic axial loading. Understanding the behaviour of this kind of structure
at different load levels is of critical importance in a range of engineering applications
such as in the design of structural components of power and chemical reactors.
Depending on the kinematic hardening, the pipe may exhibit a ratcheting behaviour
in the circumferential direction, which leads to a progressive accumulation of
deformation. Many different constitutive theories have been proposed to model the
kinematic hardening under such kind of loading history. The model of Chaboche with
nonlinear isotropic and kinematic hardening is adopted in the analysis. A change of
variable allows relating the axial and radial stress and plastic strain components with
the ones in the circumferential direction, making the simulation easier. The problem
is reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations and a simple
semi-implicit finite difference scheme is used to approximate the model equations.

Existem diferentes
adequada do comportamento não-linear complexo observado nesses problemas.
prova. No lugar da força 𝐹(𝑡) e do alongamento ∆𝐿(𝑡), as váriáveis 𝜎(𝑡) e 휀(𝑡), tensão e
deformação respectivamente, serão adotadas. Desta forma tem-se:
𝜎(𝑡) =𝐹(𝑡)
𝐴 (2.1)
17
𝐿 (2.2)
No descarregamento a curva
19
휀 = 휀𝑒 + 휀𝑝 (2.4)
휀𝑒 =𝜎
do material.
proporcionalidade a compressão é reduzido.
amolecer dependendo do material, temperatura e condições iniciais.
Neste caso, tanto a
amplitude de deformação plástica |휀𝑝| quanto a deformação plástica acumulada 𝑝
aumentam progressivamente.
23
Figura 2.10 - Fenômeno de deformação plástica cíclica progressiva (Ratchetting)

( 0) 0p t ; ( 0) ( 0) 0pt X t ; Y( 0) yt (3.10)
seguinte forma:
𝜎 = [
𝜎1 0 00 𝜎2 00 0 𝜎3
] ; 𝑆 = [
𝑆1 0 00 𝑆2 00 0 𝑆3
] ; 𝑆𝑖 = 𝜎𝑖 −1
3𝑡𝑟 (𝜎) (3.11)
deformação plástica 휀𝑝 e endurecimento cinemático 𝑋 terão as mesmas direções principais
que os tensores 𝜎 e, consequentemente, 𝑆. Sendo assim, sejam 휀1𝑝, 휀2
𝑝 e 휀3
휀𝑝 = [
] ; 𝑋 = [
𝑋1 0 00 𝑋2 00 0 𝑋3
] (3.12)
𝜎𝑖 =𝜈𝐸

3

29
̇ = √2
𝑝)2] (3.17)
𝑆𝑖
𝑆𝑗=
𝑋𝑖
𝑋𝑗; ∀|𝑖, 𝑗 = 1,2 𝑜𝑢 3 (3.18)

3
𝑖=1

ou
𝑆3 = −(𝑆1 + 𝑆2); 휀3𝑝
independente.

3.3. REPRESENTAÇÃO GEOMÉTRICA DO CRITÉRIO DE VON MISES
GENERALIZADO
𝐽 = [3
2{(𝑆1 − 𝑋1)
2 + (𝑆2 − 𝑋2)2 + (𝑆3 − 𝑋3)
2}]

A expansão
direções principais do tensor desviador
centrada no ponto 𝑋 = (𝑋1, 𝑋2).
𝜎 = [𝜎1(𝑡) = (
𝐹(𝑡)
𝐴0) 0 0
0 0 00 0 0
𝛿(𝑡)
𝐿0) 0 0
(3.26)
forma abaixo:
𝑆 =
[ 𝑆1 =
2
3𝜎1 0 0
0 𝑆2 = −1
3𝜎1 0
0 0 𝑆3 = −1
3𝜎1]
(3.27)
Logo, das equações (3.18) e (3.20), segue que:
33
= −1
𝑝 𝑒 𝑋2 = 𝑋3 = −
1
2𝑋1 (3.28)
Tem-se, portanto, em uma notação matricial:
1 0 0
1
1 0
1
1]
(3.29)
é possível obter a equação abaixo:
𝐽 = |𝜎 − 𝑋| (3.31)
Para simplificar a representação, serão utilizadas as seguintes notações: 𝜎1(𝑡) =
𝜎(𝑡), 휀1(𝑡) = 휀(𝑡) e 휀1𝑝(𝑡) = 휀𝑝(𝑡). Logo, as equações constitutivas podem ser
representadas da seguinte maneira:
𝜎 = 𝐸(휀 − 휀𝑝) (3.32)
𝑆𝑔 = +1 𝑠𝑒 (𝜎 − 𝑋) ≥ 0 𝑒 𝑆𝑔 = −1 𝑠𝑒 (𝜎 − 𝑋) < 0 (3.34)
𝑌 = 𝜎0 + 𝑣1[1 − 𝑒−𝑣2𝑝] (3.36)
𝑃𝐿𝐴𝑆𝑇𝐼𝐶𝐼𝐷𝐴𝐷𝐸 ⇒ 𝐹 = |𝜎 − 𝑋| − 𝑌 ≤ 0; ̇ ≥ 0; ̇𝐹 = 0; 𝑝(𝑡 = 0) = 0 (3.37.1)
𝑉𝐼𝑆𝐶𝑂𝑃𝐿𝐴𝑆𝑇𝐼𝐶𝐼𝐷𝐴𝐷𝐸 ⟹ ̇ = ⟨|𝜎 − 𝑋|
𝐾⟩𝑁 ; 𝑝(𝑡 = 0) = 0 (3.37.2)
34
meneira abaixo.
𝜎 = [
𝜎r 0 00 𝜎𝜃 00 0 𝜎𝑧
] (3.38)
Sendo,
𝜎r = 0 (3.39.1)
𝜎𝜃 =𝑃0𝑅
𝑒 (3.39.2)
𝜎𝑧 =𝐹(𝑡)
𝐴 (3.39.3)
Logo,
𝜎 =
[ 𝜎r = 0 0 0
0 𝜎𝜃 =𝑃0𝑅
𝑒0
0 0 𝜎𝑧 =𝐹(𝑡)
𝐴 ]
35
𝑆 =
[ −
1
3(𝜎𝜃 + 𝜎𝑧) 0 0
01
3(2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧) 0
0 01
3(2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃)
]
𝐽 = √3{(𝑆𝜃 − 𝑋𝜃)2 + (𝑆𝑍 − 𝑋𝑍)2 + (𝑆𝜃 − 𝑋𝜃)(𝑆𝑍 − 𝑋𝑍)} (3.40)
Usando a relação apresentada em (3.18) e fazendo:
𝑆𝑟
𝑆𝜃=
𝑋𝑟
𝑋𝜃=
𝜎𝜃 + 𝜎𝑧
𝜎𝑧 − 2𝜎𝜃
e
𝑆𝑧
𝑆𝜃=
𝑋𝑧
𝑋𝜃=
2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃
2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧
Segue abaixo a simplificação.
𝐽 = |𝑆𝜃 − 𝑋𝜃|√3 [1 + (2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃
2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧) + (
2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃
2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧)2
]
Sendo
𝜂(𝑡) = √3 [1 + (2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃
2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧) + (
2𝜎𝑧 − 𝜎𝜃
2𝜎𝜃 − 𝜎𝑧)2
] (3.41)
𝐽 = |𝑆𝜃 − 𝑋𝜃| 𝜂(𝑡) (3.42)

plasticidade e elasto-viscoplasticidade [17] e [18].
4.1. DISCRETIZAÇÃO NO TEMPO – MODELO UNIAXIAL
Usando a seguinte notação
1( ) ( )p p pn n (4.1)
1( ) ( )n nX X X (4.2)
1( ) ( )nnY Y Y (4.3)

Com:
( ) pnSg p (4.5)
[ ( ) ( ) ] n nX a Sg b X p (4.6)
2 1( - ( ) )n pY v v Y p (4.7)

esforço axial cíclico devido a simplicidade do modelo. O objetivo principal dessas
simulações foi testar o algoritmo desenvolvido e estudar a deformação plástica
progressiva.

dessa simetria do carregamento no comportamento do material.

5.1.3. Carregamento cíclico (A=1.5, C=0.2)

mantido constante.
5.1.4. Carregamento cíclico (A=1.7 e C=0.4)
54
55

pp
i
r
r (5.8)
valor seria atingido.

5.3. ESTUDO DO PASSO NO TEMPO
A partir deste
no tempo (∆𝑡).

proporcionalidade.

Onde ∆𝑡 é o passo no tempo e 𝑇 é o período.

Capítulo 6 Conclusões e Perspectivas
Futuras
Tubulações metálicas sob pressão e submetidas a cargas axiais cíclicas além do
relativamente caras. A análise elasto-viscoplástica realizada nesse trabalho permite
Incluir o efeito do dano para prever a falha estrutural;
extremidades;
71

The present paper is concerned with the analysis of the ratcheting behaviour of elasto-plastic thin-walled pipes under internal pressure and subjected to cyclic axial loading. Understanding the behaviourof this kind of structure at different load levels is of critical importance in a range of engineeringapplications such as in the design of structural components of power and chemical reactors. Dependingon the kinematic hardening, the pipe may exhibit a ratcheting behaviour in the circumferential direction, which leads to a progressive accumulation of deformation. Many different constitutive theories havebeen proposed to model the kinematic hardening under such kind of loading history. The present paperpresents a simple local criterion to indicate whether or not the pipe may exhibit a progressiveaccumulation of deformation. Such criterion is independent of the choice of the evolution law adoptedfor the backstress tensor. As an example, a semi-analytic approach using a mixed nonlinear kinematic/isotropic hardening model is proposed to be used in a preliminary analysis of this kind of structure.

1. Introduction
When a metallic component is subjected to cycles of mechanicalloading beyond the elastic limit many important phenomena canoccur, what may lead to structural failure. Different structural situa-tions exist in which this combination of sustained or primary loadingand secondary cyclic loading can lead to incremental collapse or whatis known as ratcheting. For instance, pressurised metallic tubes underreversed bending [1] or pressurised metallic tubes subjected to cyclicpush pull [2]. These structures under such load combinations areknown to exhibit continued strain growth in the hoop direction.
Understanding the behaviour of this kind of structure at differentload levels is of critical importance in a range of engineering applica-tions such as in the design of structural components of power andchemical reactors (primary heat transport system of nuclear powerplants, for instance). The reliability of structural integrity predictiondepends strongly on the physical adequacy of the elasto-plastic con-stitutive equations considered in the analysis. Many papers concernedwith ratcheting failure mechanisms or with constitutive models forratcheting have been performed in the last years. Since the classicalworks of Chaboche (see [3], for instance), most works were concernedwith an adequate modelling of the kinematic hardening to improvethe description of ratcheting effects and to include a better modelling
of multiaxial behavior [4–7]. In [4], a complete model was developed, including isotropic hardening, to describe the ratcheting behaviour of316L stainless steel at room temperature. In this study, one particularkinematic hardening rule was selected aiming at describing both theshape of the normal cyclic stress–strain relations and the ratchetingresults. The main concern, as discussed in [5], was to propose rulesthat induce much less accumulation of uniaxial and multiaxial ratch-etting strains than the Armstrong and Frederick rule. In [5], kinematichardening rules formulated in a hardening/dynamic recovery formatwere examined for simulating racheting behaviour. These rules, chara-cterized by decomposition of the kinematic hardening variable intocomponents, are based on the assumption that each component has acritical state for its dynamic recovery to be fully activated. In the paperby Abdel Karim and Ohno [6], an alternative kinematic hardeningmodel was proposed for simulating the steady-state in ratchetingwithin the framework of the strain hardening and dynamic recoveryformat. The model was formulated to have two kinds of dynamicrecovery terms, which operate at all times and only in a critical state, respectively. The model is able of representing appropriately thesteady-state in ratcheting under multiaxial and uniaxial cyclic loading. In [7], seven cyclic plasticity models for structural ratcheting responsesimulations were analysed: bilinear (Prager), multilinear (Besseling),Chaboche, Ohno–Wang, Abdel Karim–Ohno, modified Chaboche (Bariand Hassan) and modified Ohno–Wang (Chen and Jiao). Apparently, none of the models evaluated perform satisfactorily in simulating thestraight pipe diameter change and circumferential strain ratchetingresponses.

In particular, many experimental and numerical studies on ratch-eting induced by reversed bending in straight pipes and elbows havebeen performed in the last years [1,8–10], and a detailed review can befound in [1,10]. In [1], ratcheting studies were carried out on Type304LN stainless steel straight pipes and elbows subjected to steadyinternal pressure and cyclic bending load. Ratcheting behaviour ofstraight pipes and elbows were compared and it was generallyinferred that ratcheting was more pronounced in straight pipes thanin elbows. Shariati et al. [8] investigated the softening and ratchetingbehaviours of SS316L cantilevered cylindrical shells under cyclicbending load. Accumulation of the plastic strain or ratcheting phe-nomenon occurred under force-control loading with nonzero meanforce. It was verified that an increase of the mean force induces anincrease in the accumulation of the plastic deformation and its rate.Plastic mechanism analyses of circular tubular members under cyclicloading were performed in [9]. This paper provides new methods ofanalyses for circular hollow sections subjected to a constant amplitudecyclic pure bending and a large axial compression–tension cycle. Thelocal buckling analysis was performed using a rigid plastic mechanismanalysis.
Although ratcheting based criteria for integrity assessment of pres-surized piping under severe loading can be found in codes [11], so farmost constitutive models are unable to describe the complex non-linear cyclic behaviour observed in this kind of problem. Besides, theanalysis of the stress and strain fields usually requires the use ofcomplex finite element codes, what can be a shortcoming for theeffective use of these theories by designers.
The present paper is concerned with the analysis of the coupledeffect of kinematic and isotropic hardening on the multiaxial ratchet-ing behaviour of elasto-plastic thin-walled straight pipes under inter-nal pressure and subjected to cyclic axial loading. An easily employableframework to be used in the analysis of structures of this type withcomplex material behaviour, as elasto-plasticity with both isotropicand kinematic hardening, is presented. A simple and efficient algo-rithm for approximating the solution is described.
Simulations of AISI 316L steel and AU4G aluminium alloy pressurevessels at room temperature subjected to multiaxial loadings are pres-ented and analysed. It is shown that cyclic behaviour is stronglydependent on the kinematic hardening, but also on the isotropichardening. The main result of the paper is the proposition of a simplecondition (involving the ratio of the circumferential component of thebackstress tensor and the auxiliary variable related to the isotropichardening) to indicate when the pipe may exhibit a ratcheting beha-viour, which leads to a progressive accumulation of deformation. Suchkind of criterion is independent of the evolution law adopted for thebackstresss tensor. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that thepaper is not focused on the evaluation of the physical adequacy ofdifferent constitutive models for predicting ratcheting behaviour.Although the Marquis–Chaboche elasto-plastic constitutive Eqs. (11)and (12) have been considered in the present study, such a conditionfor ratcheting to arise can be applied to any cyclic plasticity modelwith both isotropic and kinematic hardening.
2. Summary of the elasto-plastic constitutive equations
The following set of elasto-plastic constitutive equations pro-posed by Marquis [12] is adequate to model the cyclic inelasticbehaviour of metallic material at room temperature. A further dis-cussion about these equations can be found in [13].
In the framework of small deformations and isothermal processes, besides the stress tensor σ and the strain tensor ε , the followingauxiliary variables are also considered: the plastic strain tensor ε p, theaccumulated plastic strain p and two other auxiliary variables ðX ;YÞ,respectively related to the kinematic hardening and to the isotropichardening. 3. Thin-walled elasto-plastic cylinder under constant internalpressure and cyclic axial loading
The goal of this section is to summarize the procedure to analyse aparticular two-dimensional state of stress obtained from the generalmodel. In this two-dimensional abstract context, the tensor σ ðx; tÞ at agiven point x and a given time instant t is supposed to be given by thefollowing expressions (in cylindrical coordinates)
σ ¼σr 0 00 σθ 00 0 σz
264
375 with σr ¼ 0; σθ ¼ αðtÞσy; σz ¼ βðtÞσy:
ð16Þσr is the radial stress component, σθ the circumferential stresscomponent and σz the axial stress component. All other componentsare considered to be equal to zero. α and β are arbitrary scalarfunctions of time such that αðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ 0 and βðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ 0.
A theoretical analysis allows explaining the different possible cyclicplastic behaviours in if such kind of (local) stress history is supposed tooccur. This analysis includes the case of thin-walled elasto-plasticcylinders under constant internal pressure and subjected to cyclic axialloading. In this case, the expressions relating the external loading andgeometry with the axial and circumferential stress component σz andmay vary depending on the nature of the cyclic axial loading. Never-theless, no matter the nature of the axial loading, the stress tensor at agiven point will always have the abstract form presented in Eq. (16),since αðtÞ and βðtÞ are arbitrary scalar functions.
For instance, in the case of an elasto-plastic cylinder withinternal radius ri and thickness e submitted to an internal pressureP, the circumferential stress component (or hoop stress) σθ andthe circumferential strain component εθ are classically approxi-mated in the framework of membrane theory of shells of revolu-tion by the following expression (provided the internal radius riand the thickness e are such that ri410e and ovalisation isnegligible)
σθ ¼Prie; εθ ¼
Δrri
ð17Þ
where Δr is the variation of the internal radius. To simplify the
analysis, the cylinder is assumed to be open-ended (studiesanalysing the effect of the closed ends in the cylinder integritycan be found in [15,16]). In a cyclic push and pull with axial forceFt , the axial stress is homogeneous along a cross-section andapproximated by the following expression: σz Ft=ð2πrieÞ.
In real straight pipes in operation, the cyclic axial stress componentcan be caused by a non-homogeneous temperature variation or by abending moment [10]. The present paper is not concerned with theanalysis of the equilibrium equations in these cases and the expressionof both the axial stress component σz and may vary depending on thematerial, the geometry and the loading history. In the case of cyclicbending, the axial stress is not homogeneous and complex expressionsshould be adopted. In the case of non isothermal problems, the fullycoupled constitutive equations must be considered (see, [17], forinstance). Nevertheless, if ovalisation is negligible, the hoop stressand the axial stress in a thin walled pipe can be considered uncoupledsince the expressions presented in Eq. (17) are still reasonable.
Besides, as it will be verified in the sequence, the particular expres-sion relating the axial stress with material, geometry and externalloading does not affect the basic goal of the paper, which is to identify asimple criterion for ratcheting to arise when the circumferentialcomponent of the backstress tensor exceed a given isotropic hardeningparameter.
No matter the pipe material and geometry, α must be a constantvalue in Eq. (16) for a fixed internal pressure of the pipe. Besides, sincethe goal is to study the ratcheting induced by a periodic axial loading, the axial stress is assumed to be a periodic function of time at a givenmaterial point and, consequently, β must be a periodic function oftime. Since plasticity is rate-independent, the frequency of the axialloading does not affect the stress–strain behaviour and only maximumand minimum stress levels (and, therefore, the maximum and mini-mum values of the function β) are important in the analysis.
Taking into account assumption (16) and using definition (7), itis possible to conclude that the radial, circumferential and axialcomponents Sr , Sθ , Sz of the deviatoric stress tensor S are its onlynon-zero components
Sr ¼ 13ðσθþσzÞ ¼ 1

It is important to note that the principal components of thedeviatoric stress and of the plastic deformation are not independent, which allows introducing additional simplifications in the equations. From Eqs. (15) and (18.1)–(18.3), it comes that (provided ð2αβÞa0)

From Eqs. (18.2) and (21.2) it is possible to verify that the axialstress component affects the plastic strain in the circumferentialdirection. In the case of a tube under constant internal pressure, asignificant variation of the axial stress component may cause aplastic flow in the circumferential direction.
4. Solution algorithm
Eqs. (21.1)–(21.4) define a nonlinear system of ordinary differ-ential equations coupled with the constraints (21.5). The basicmathematical problem considered in this paper is formed by Eqs.(21.1)–(21.4) together with the following initial conditions
pðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ εpθðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ Xθðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ 0;Yðt ¼ 0Þ ¼ σy ð22Þ
The solution algorithm used to obtain a numerical approximationfor this initial value problem is based on the operator split method[18–20]. The objective of this technique is to take advantage of someadditive decomposition properties of the mathematical operator tosolve a sequence of simpler problems instead of a unique complexproblem. The approximation techniques based on the operator splitmethod and associated product formula algorithms have been appliedin various areas of Continuum Mechanics and, in particular, in elasto-plasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity.

The main idea of the solution algorithm is to explore the factthat all time rates of the variables εpθ , Xθ and Y , defined in Eqs.(21.2)–(21.4), are linear functions of _p, hence, the followingapproximation can be considered
ðεpθÞnþ1 ¼ ðεpθÞnþΔεpθ ð24:1Þ

Once the increment Δp is known, all the variables can beobtained at the instant tnþ1 using Eqs. (24.1)–(24.4), (25.1)–(25.3).The procedure can be improved using an iterative solutiontechnique that uses this Euler scheme coupled with a projectionscheme. The projection technique assures that Foδ at any timestep, with δ40 being the maximum admissible error in thecomputation of F in the plastic steps. Such a technique allowsthe computation of accurate results even if very large steps areused, what is crucial if the simulation of a great number of cycles isnecessary.

5. Results and discussion
In order to better understand when ratcheting may occur in anarbitrary tube, it is considered an AISI 316L steel at roomtemperature. The material parameters in this case are

a¼ 45 GPa; b¼ 60; v1 ¼ 0; v2 ¼ 0 ð29Þ
It can be observed that, for this kind of material, the hardeningis purely kinematic (since v1 ¼ 0 and v2 ¼ 0). The goal is todemonstrate that the ratcheting phenomenon is essentially dueto the kinematic hardening and thus it is chosen a material whichdoes not present isotropic hardening (Y ¼ σy).
In the analysis, the loading histories depicted in Fig. 1 (thefunctions αðtÞ and βðtÞ, see (16)) are taken into account. Since theelasto-plastic constitutive are rate independent, the time is notimportant and it is only used to establish a sequence of events. Thus, tn ¼ ðt=ΔtÞ, where Δt is an arbitrary time interval. Theparameters A and B are chosen in order to allow understandingthe role of the stress components in the ratcheting behaviour.Parameter α is related to the internal pressure. Combining theexpressions in (16) and (17), we have
σθ ¼ αðtnÞσy ¼Prie
) P ¼ ασyeri
 ð30Þ
The maximum hoop stress is given by ðσθÞmax ¼ Aσy ) P ¼Aðσye=riÞ (see Eq. (16)). Therefore, if A¼ 1 then the maximum hoopstress is such that ðσθÞmax ¼ σy and the internal pressure is givenby P ¼ Aðσye=riÞ.
B41 is the amplitude of the periodic function βðtnÞ ¼B sin πtn

, with σz ¼ βðtnÞσy. Therefore, the maximum and
minimum axial stress component are ðσzÞmax ¼ Bσy andðσzÞmin ¼ Bσy.
Significant ratcheting in the circumferential direction occurs fordifferent values of B as it is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Parameter B isrelated to the amplitude of the cyclic axial loading. Therefore, different amplitudes in the axial loading induce different ratchet-ing behaviour in circumferential direction. Since εpθ ¼ ðΔrÞp=ri,
where ðΔrÞp is the plastic or irreversible variation of the internalradius, it may be concluded that the tube diameter will increaseincrementally with the axial cyclic loading. Fig. 4 presents theevolution of the accumulated plastic strain for A¼ 1 and differentvalues of the parameter B.
Under cyclic axial loading and unloading, the pipe exhibitshysteresis (a phase lag), which leads to a dissipation of mechanicalenergy. The progressive accumulation of plastic deformation canbe explained by the strong kinematic hardening observed in thismaterial. The analysis is very similar to the one performed in [21]for progressive accumulation of deformation observed in cyclictension tests performed in epoxy polymers.
The elastic region is the domain of stresses in which there is noplastic flow. As commented before, the elastic domain can be

tion process. In the particular case studied in this paper, fromcondition F ¼ SθXθ

ðY=ηÞ o0.The elastic segment has a length (2Y=η) and it is centred on Xθ .The elastic segment also varies with the plastic deformationprocess.
If ðY=ηÞ4Xθ hysteresis with consequent accumulation of cyclicplastic deformation does not occur. For the pipe material under theprescribed loading conditions considered in this paper, the kine-matic hardening variable can be greater that the isotopic hard-ening variable ðY=ηÞ and a negative plastic strain rate may occureven with a positive stress (_εpθo0 if _Sθo0 even when Sθ40). Thisfact explains why hysteresis and a progressive accumulation ofdeformation occur in a cyclic load–unload test as shown in Fig. 5.In the case of a material that presents both kinematic and isotropichardening, the reasoning is similar and ratcheting occurs if thekinematic hardening parameter (the circumferential component ofthe backstress tensor) Xθ exceeds the isotropic hardening para-meter ðY=ηÞ. Therefore, a simple criterion involving the ratio of thecircumferential component of the backstress tensor and theauxiliary variable related to the isotropic hardening indicates ifthe pipe may exhibit a ratcheting behaviour, which leads to aprogressive accumulation of deformation.
Ratcheting may occur if

Figs. 6–8 show the results of simulations considering an AU4Galuminium alloy at room temperature. The loading history con-sidering Eq. (16) is the same presented in Fig. 1, with A¼ 1 and
different values of the parameter B. The material parameters inthis case are

v1 ¼ 100; v2 ¼ 1:6: ð32ÞAs it can be verified, despite the isotropic hardening, the
behaviour is similar than in the previous case. The considerationof a range of hoop stresses is perfectly possible within the model. This would permit a ratchet diagram to be developed—for anygiven set of hardening parameters. Fig. 9 shows the results ofsimulations considering the aluminium alloy with B¼ 1:5 anddifferent values of the parameter A. Significant ratcheting in thecircumferential direction also occurs even when Ao1 ) σθoσy.
It is interesting to remark that, in all cases, after a few cycles, the increment of the accumulated plastic strain per cycle δp tendsto a constant value (Fig. 10). Such a plastic increment per cycle can

be easily obtained using the proposed numerical procedure. Asimple preliminary failure criterion would be to assume that theprobability of failure is higher when the accumulated plastic strainis greater than a given limit, i.e. when p ðnδpÞ4pmax.
6. Conclusion
Metallic pipes under constant pressure and cyclic axial loadingbeyond the elastic limit may exhibit continued strain growth inthe hoop direction, what is known as ratcheting, which leads tothe accumulation of cyclic plastic deformation. The simple elasto-plastic analysis presented in this paper allows explaining this kindof phenomenon. With an adequate cmanipulation of variables, the multiaxial problem can be reduced to the analysis in the
circumferential direction. It is shown that cyclic behaviour isstrongly dependent on the kinematic hardening, but also on theisotropic hardening. A simple condition involving the ratio of thecircumferential component of the backstress tensor and theauxiliary variable related to the isotropic hardening allows indi-cating when the pipe may exhibit a ratcheting behaviour. Althoughthe Marquis–Chaboche elasto-plastic constitutive equations havebeen considered in the present study, the condition for ratchetingto arise is valid for any cyclic plasticity model with both isotropicand kinematic hardening, provided Eq. (15) holds. Besides, thesolution algorithm can be easily adapted to other kinematichardening rules provided the increment of the circumferentialcomponent of the backstress tensor ΔXθ can be expressed as afunction of the plastic strain increment Δεpθ of the accumulatedplastic strain increment Δp: ΔXθ ¼ f ðΔεpθ ;ΔpÞ. In this case, Eq.(25.2) would be replaced by the alternative expression.
