“Good morning everyone!” I said as I walked into the kitchen, but no one answered.

“Where is everybody?” I thought to myself. Last night the house was full of people. My uncle, aunt and cousin came for dinner and in our white clothes, we all walked to thesynagogue together. After we came back home, I was tired and fell asleep on the sofa.

But now no one is here. The house is quiet. There are no cars on the street. There is no radio andno television. There is no noise at all!

“Good morning, Daniel. Did you sleep well?” my mother said as she walked into the kitchen.

“Where is everyone?” I asked. “Where is father, Uncle Ben and my cousin, Tal? I wanted to play basketball outside with Tal today. Did he go home?”

“It’s Yom Kippur, Daniel. All of the men are at the synagogue. Tal is there, too! He had his Bar Mitzvah last year,” mother answered.

“Are they coming back for lunch? Are we all eating again together this afternoon?” I asked.

“No, Daniel,” Mom answered, “Yom Kippur is a day of fasting. We do not eat or drink. We do not drive cars or watch TV. It is a day for thinking about the way we live. We need to think quietly about the good and bad things we do.”

“But Mom, I’m hungry!” I said.

“Don’t worry, Daniel,” Mom said. “There is food for you in the refrigerator. You don’t have to fast. You are only 11 years old. We will all have a big meal together this evening when Yom Kippur is over.”

“What kind of holiday is this?” I thought to myself. “No TV … no radio … no playing basketball … no fun!”

I sat down on the sofa and looked out the window. It was quiet outside. All I heard were the birds singing in the trees. I closed my eyes and started to think about doing good things and helping my family and friends. It was nice. The birds singing was nice. Sometimes ‘quiet’ is a good thing!
