It has; been recounted in many traditione: that after receiving

allegiance fromthe community, Abu Bakr sent someone to Ali and

asked for his Il.tleginnce. Ali said, HI have promised not to leave my

it has be-en mentioned that Ali gave his allegiance to Abu Bakr

after six months. This itself is proof that Ali had finished com-

This reveal, that Hazrat Ali (RA,) compiled a Quean in 6 months. This was

VIEW OF THE AHL ..SUNNA- WAL-JAMAATREGARDING THE QUR}A.N

(Jab] al-Din) a l-Suyut i (R.A.)-, after having mentioned the starernenrs of'other

scholars regarding the collection (If the Qur?an and the arrangement of irs text,

which is tawq'fi: (divinely settled by Allah), he says: "That Qadi Abu Bakr stares

in his work entitled al-Intisar that the :lCCepI~J view about the Qur'an is that the

whole of it which Allah had revealed and He commanded that it should CIt':cribed

(in the particular manner) and which He did not abrogate later , and the recitation

whereof has not been taken up after it had Once been sen; down, is that verv text

which is ava ilable to us between the two boards and which corresponds wiih the

Redacrion of'Uthman(may Allah be pleased with him). This is also to be held that

nothing of it has been dropped out, nor anything added thereunto", Al-Baghawi

says in (he Shaih ai-Sunna: "The Companions ma y Allah be pleased with them

collected the Qur'an which i~available to us between the (WO boards thereof and

which Allah bad revealed unto His Mess.enger, and they sodcd nothing into it from

Al-Khazin says in the int roduction La his well-known Tatsir; «The valid

proofs have established that the Companions collected the Qur'an which is availa-

ble to us between the two boards thereof in the slime form as Allah the Almightyhad revealed unto the Mes~enger of Allah peace and b lessing 0f AIlah be upon him .

They did not add anything from themselves nor expunged anything therefrom.

They wrote whatever they heard f rom the Messenger ofAllah - peac~ and blessings

of Allah be upon him - and they did not change the order of the matter by putting

earlier or later than that was in the original Qur'au, Nor did they give the matter an

arrangement which the .'\1~5:s-enger of Allah - peace and blessings of Allah be upon

him - had not given. The Qur'an is scribed on the Preserved Tablet in the same

The Qadi (Iyad) S3y~ in the book entitled al-Shifa: "Know that whoever~houl~ disregard and belittle the importance of the Qur'an Or the COP)' rhereof by

of a verse, or whoever shold flout the ordinances (of the Qur'an), or distrust aIlY

anyth ing (of the revelation) other than what is (now available to us) within the tWO

boards (of the Qur'anic CQPY) : A similar report is given by Muh4mmad ibn

Ibn Harnz al-Zahiri says in his monumental work entitled al-Fisal fi'l-milal ....3

Imam al-Zarkashi says in hi, book called al-Burhan, after he M$ quoted some

"We have surely sent down the Qur'an: and We will certainly preserve the same

And He also says (Q, ixxv. 17):

"(It is incurnbcnt ) on us to col lect (the Qur'an illthy mind) and (to reach thee the

true) read ing thereof'. .

(the Qur'an from corruption) by means of continued observance of the ordinances

by the mukallnfs ( the believers who art required to abide by the laws of the Qur'an),

II). This is the absolute proof of the genuineness of the Copy of this Mu~baf

(al-Buihan-fi- ulum Qur'an)

The Sunni Commentators of the Qur'an mention unde r the ve rsef Q.; xv.9):

that the Q ur ' an is certa inly preserved from an y alterat ion, change or pervers ion. All

of them an: agreed on this point. For instance, al-Khazin says in his Tafs ir : "And

the (Qur'an) that We have sent down unto Muhammad. We shall preserve it". I.e,

from any audition (to be made into it). or from something to be dropped out of lr, orfrom alteration, change or tahrif (prcvcrsion of the text). The !'ooiobtcQur'an is

undoubtedly preserved from all such things, Nobody from among men, genii etc.

Under this verse of the Qur'an ():Y. 9), al-Nasafl describes in his Ta fsir:

"(Allah) has emphasised on the (.\1uslims) the fact that He alone has definitely

The Imam Ibn Kathir says; "Then Allah decided that He HimsdfWho bad

revealed the (Book of ) admonition should preserve it from any change and altera -

tion".
