AKDN iN KeNyAOver the last century, the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) many programmes and diverse institutions have become strong forces of social and economic development in Kenya, improving the quality of life in some of the country’s most resource poor communities. An Agreement of Cooperation for Development was signed with the Government of Kenya in 1996. it recognises AKDN’s contributions to national development and creates an enabling framework for its activities.

Many Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) institutions began as voluntary organisations and have grown into strong institutions such as Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) and Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS). These organisations have made important contributions to the development of the nation. The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) has also made key investments in Kenyan industry and infrastructure, including electricity generation, agriculture, media and tourism. In the coming years, the Aga Khan University (AKU) will expand its activities in health care and the professional education of doctors, nurses and teachers.Source: http://www.akdn.org/kenya

AKDN and its institutional predecessors have been active in Kenya for nearly a century.

Financial Services: Incorporated in 1937, Jubilee Insurance is the oldest composite insurance company in Kenya with 70 years of experience. Established 60 years ago, Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has matured into a fully fledged commercial banking group in East Africa with branches in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Since the early 1960s, Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) has been recognised for its professional management capability; its achievements in project development; and for promoting investment with a social conscience. IPS companies in East Africa include Allpack, Farmer’s Choice, Tsavo Power, Alltex EPZ and Frigoken in Kenya.

The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, established in 2003, is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and part of a network of 17 planned academies worldwide.

Tourism Promotion Services (TPS) promotes tourism by building, rehabilitating and managing hotels, resorts and lodges that contribute to economic growth in an environmentally and culturally sensitive manner. These investments are the result of close consultation with governments, with TPS often assisting them in the development of integrated tourism development plans for specific region.

Aga Khan University Hospital: In Kenya, the Aga Khan University educates and trains nurses, specialist physicians and educators, nurturing in them a sense of social responsibility and an ethical commitment to serve their communities. The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers a post-Registered Nurse Bachelor of Science

Degree in Nursing (BScN) to working nurses, allowing them to remain at their workplaces while pursuing professional development.

The Nation Media Group, founded by the Aga Khan in 1960, is also one of Kenya’s most important companies. It has its origins in Kenya’s Taifa and Nation newspapers, which were set up to provide independent voices during the years just preceding the country’s independence.

Frigoken Limited (FKL), a project company of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), endeavourers to forge a better future for Kenya’s rural small scale farmers by engaging directly with small scale farmers to produce various agricultural produce, including green beans. Frigoken provides farmers with a range of services, including price guarantees, assured market, provision of highest certified quality inputs, and agricultural extension services at no cost to the farmer.
