PANJWANI CENTER FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE AND DRUG RESEARCH, INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (ICCBS), UNIVERSITY OF KARACHI, KARACHI-75270, PAKISTAN INVITATION Dear Colleagues, It is a great honor and pleasure to invite you to the 9 th ANRAP International Seminar on “From Plant to Patient: Identification of New Drugs for Metabolic Disorders” which will be held at the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan, during January 25-27, 2019. In recent years there is a rapid increase in the metabolic disorders, challenging the available therapeutics to control their global spread. The medicinal value of Asian plants has been known since centuries but proper measures to harness their potential are still in infancy. The discovery of artemisinin for malaria, and metformin for diabetes are prime examples of therapeutic potential of plant derived compounds. Natural products are an important source of new drugs in all major disease areas, including metabolic disorders. ANRAP (Asian Network of Research on Anti-Diabetic Plants) was established with the aim of coordinating research efforts in the field of antidiabetic plant materials with enormous floral resources of the Asian subcontinent. With the vision to provide a common platform to the scientists working for elucidating the therapeutic potential of plants against metabolic disorders, ANRAP is organizing international and national seminars, workshops and symposia in the relevant fields since 1994. The previous ANRAP International Seminars were held in Bangladesh (Dhaka), India (Kolkata), Nepal (Kathmandu), and Malaysia (Kuala Lampur). The 9 th meeting of this series is scheduled during January 25-27, 2019 in Karachi, Pakistan. ANRAP-9 will provide an opportunity to bring world famous scientists in the multidisciplinary fields of metabolic disorders together and exchange ideas and views on different themes. This will foster cross-breeding of ideas and developing a common strategy towards the science-based development of plant-based medicine against diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Along with this, it will indeed be an opportunity to learn about rich and diverse culture of Pakistan. We are looking forward to see you in Karachi. Prof. Dr. M. Mosihuzzaman Chairman, ANRAP Board Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, H.I., S.I., T.I. Director, ICCBS/ Chairman ANRAP-9 VENUE The seminar will be held at the beautiful campus of International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi. The ICCBS campus is located at about 20 minutes drive from the Jinnah International Airport and about 40 minutes driving distance from the largest shopping area in the center of the city. Bank, post office, stores, restaurants, malls and travel agencies are also located within short distance of the seminar venue. Evening bus shuttles will run for the participants, staying on-campus, to take them to various shopping centers and other attractions in the city. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES § To bring the national and international researchers together, particularly from the Asian region, to share knowledge, exchange ideas and research experiences in combating metabolic disorders and other related diseases. Most importantly this major event will expose young Pakistani researchers with the best of science and technologies in the world in the exciting field of natural product chemistry and pharmacology, as well as contribution of natural products in modern drug discovery and development. § To emphasize the importance of strengthening R&D capacity and capabilities in addressing the needs of our nation and other Asian countries. § To raise awareness on the development and frontier research towards paving the way forward in the fight against metabolic disorders, and other related diseases. § To coordinate the efforts of a diverse group of scientists, chemists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, pharmacists, and experts in analytics, such as NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to constitute a platform for research networking and creating links for future collaborations. SCOPE § Ethnopharmacology of antidiabetic medicinal plants. § Natural products for the management of metabolic disorders. § Research study on complications associated with metabolic disorders and other related diseases. § Discovery of lead molecules from medicinal plants for the management of metabolic disorders. § Development of new drugs from the regional biota for the management of metabolic disorders. § Standardization, efficacy and safety of herbal remedies. § Best strategies for pre-clinical studies, and clinical trials in plant-based formulations. CALL FOR PAPERS / POSTERS All participants are invited to present their research in the form of oral and poster presentations. Abstracts for oral and/or poster presentations should be sent to [email protected] or [email protected] by December 15, 2018. The poster board area will be 1.2 m x 1.8 m. Flattened bread (“nan”) baked in a deep gas or coal-fired or thinner floppy bread (“chapati”) pit is invariably served with all meals. If you like curry, there is a whole variety available everywhere. The popular local drinks are “lassi” (yogurt beaten to a rich paste with water and sugar added) or fresh lime in water sweetened with a rich helping of sugar. The food is not expensive.
