MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL

KOALAS

ELEPHANTS

Koalas live in Eucalyptus

forests, in Australia. They eat

leaves and especially eucalyptus

leaves. They are 60 cm to 91 cm

long. Baby koalas are called

Joeys and are about the size of a

bean when they are born. They

are not bears but marsupials. I

love koalas.

Elena

My favourite animal is the

elephant. It is very big, strong

and fat. But it is food for lions.

Its nose is big. It lives in tropical

forests and in Africa. It is the

biggest animal in Africa. It eats

plants and fruit.

THE WHITE TIGER

THE GAZELLE

I like the white tiger of Siberia,

because it is the biggest cat in the

world. It has a white, thick fur with

black stripes. It hunts and eats

deer. It lives alone. It is white to

hide in the snow. It walks silently

and sees very well in the dark.

People are its enemies. They hunt

it to take its fur. I saw three little,

white tigers in the zoo. The white

tiger is my favourite animal.

Konstandinos

I like the gazelle, because it is

very fast, strong, beautiful and

clever. It lives in the wild, in

Africa. It is very difficult to

study them, because they are

very silent. Gazelles

communicate with sounds.

They give birth to two or three

babies. Their enemy is the

leopard.

Ilias

THE LEOPARD

GIANT PANDAS

My favourite animal is the

leopard or panther. I like it

because it is fast. It has a

beautiful fur that helps it to

hide in the plants. It hunts

antelopes and impalas in the

morning and in the evening. It

lives in Africa and Asia. It

sees very well in the dark. It

can climb trees. It lives alone.

Its enemies are other leopards,

lions and mostly humans.

People hunt it for its beautiful

fur. I saw a leopard in the zoo.

Iakovos

Giant pandas live in China. They live in

the forest. They eat bamboo, grass, bulbs,

some insects and fruit. They are one and

a half metre tall. Cubs are born hairless

and with their eyes closed. Giant pandas

belong to the bear family.

MY TOWN, SALAMINA

I live in Salamina. It is a small island near

the capital of Greece, Athens. It has got

mountains and many beautiful beaches.

There are not skyscrapers but there are high

buildings. There are many parks, tennis

courts and a summer cinema. There is a

very big forest in Kanakia. There are many

schools, but there is only one hospital.

There are also two hotels. 50000 people live

here in Salamina.

Iakovos and Konstandinos

I live in Salamina. It is the

largest island near Piraeus

and it is a beautiful city.

There are also a lot of parks

and small houses. Some

houses are in the mountain

among trees. Salamina has

very beautiful beaches and

happy people. I love

Salamina!

TROPICAL RAINFORESTS

We must protect our tropical rainforests,

because we need them for our survival on

this planet. One thing we can do is stop

cutting down trees or we can protect the

endangered tropical animals.

Ilias

We must protect our tropical rainforests,

because we need them for our survival on

this planet. One thing we can do is stop

cutting down the trees, because we need the

trees to clean the air. We can also protect

the endangered animals like the koala, the

panda and the giraffe. People need to

recycle the paper to save the trees in the

rainforests. We need to learn how to protect

the rainforests and tell the other people how

to do it. -Elena

Page 9: Discovering the World Through English

9

People destroy the Earth every day. They

destroy our rainforests. We must stop that.

We must do recycling. We must cut fewer

trees. People must stop hunting. We mustn’t

pollute the environment, because animals will

die. We must use buses, trams and trains. We

mustn’t use cars very often. If we do all these

things, there will be more rainforests on

Earth. -Konstandinos

The tropical rainforests are

disappearing from Earth. We must do

something to stop that. One thing we

must do is recycling. If we recycle

paper we will not cut trees to make

paper. Another thing we must do is

protect the forests from fire. We must

also use buses, trains and trams. We

mustn’t use our cars every day. We

mustn’t litter the sea, the forests and

our cities. If we do these things, we

will save the Earth. -Iakovos

We must protect our tropical rainforests, because we need them for our survival on

this planet. One thing we can do is stop cutting down the trees, so we have to recycle

paper. Animals like the koala, the panda and the giraffe are endangered and we need

to protect them. We have to learn how to protect the rainforests and teach our friends

how to do it. -Alice

ENDANGERED SPECIES

Page 11: Discovering the World Through English

11

THE AFRICAN

ELEPHANT

THE ASIAN ELEPHANT

African elephants are the largest land

animals on Earth. The ears of

African elephants look like the

continent of Africa. Both male and

female elephants have tusks they use

to dig for food and water. African

elephants are an endangered species.

Elena

The Asian elephant is smaller than its African cousin.

Asian elephants have small, rounded ears. They like

water and enjoy showering by sucking water into their

tusks and spraying it all over themselves. They are an

endangered species.

Alice

12

THE GORILLA

TREE FROGS

Tree frogs are an endangered species. They live in tropical rainforests. People hunt

them for their poison and their skin to make medicines. We must stop hunting them so

that they are not disappeared. If we do that, we will save tree frogs. People and birds

are their worst enemies. -Iakovos

Tree frogs jump from tree to tree. They live in tall trees, in tropical rainforests, in

Africa and Asia. They have become an endangered species. We need to protect tree

frogs, by protecting their home, tropical rainforests. We also have to stop hunting and

capturing them. I like tree frogs, because they are amazing. -Ilias

Gorillas are the second closest relatives to

humans. They live in tropical forests,

mainly in Africa. But lately, they have

become an endangered species. We need to

protect gorillas by protecting their home,

tropical forests. We also have to stop

hunting and capturing them. This way, we

can be sure gorillas will live on Earth for

many more years. We must do that if we

love the animals.

Konstandinos

MANATEES

Manatees or marine cows live in the sea. These animals are peaceful and very

slow. They live in the Atlantic Ocean and they have a very loud voice. There are

three kinds of manatees: the manatees of West India, the manatees of Africa and

the manatees of the Amazon. They are in danger of extinction. They are often hit

by motorboats and sometimes trapped in fishing nets. -Iakovos

THE HARPY EAGLE

The Harpy eagle lives in the tropical forests. It is my favourite eagle because it is

the biggest eagle of all. It is the strongest eagle in the world. It eats apes, small

birds and dead eagles. It has got long nails like a man’s hand. Its wings are two

metres long and it weighs 8 kg. It flies very fast, about 80 km per hour.

Deforestation and shooting are the two main threats to the survival of Harpy

Eagles. - Konstandinos

A SPECIAL BUILDING IN MY COUNTRY

The Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis is located on a high rocky hill in the city of Athens and contains the

famous Parthenon. The word ‘acropolis’ comes from the Greek words ‘άκρον’ and

‘πόλις’. It was Pericles in the 5th

century BC who coordinated the construction of the

city’s most important buildings. During the Golden Age of Athens (460-430 BC),

Phidias, a great Athenian sculptor, Ictinus and Callicrates were responsible for the

construction. Many people from all over the world visit the Acropolis, which is one of

the most famous historical monuments in the world. -Alice & Elena

honour goddess Athena and to show

others the power of Athens. It is a place

which I have visited and would like to

visit again. -Iakovos

OUR PROJECT ON SAVING ENERGY

(Alice, Elena, Hermes, Iakovos, Ilias, Konstandinos)

How much energy do

we spend at home?

People use energy in all aspects of their lives - for cooking, lighting and entertainment. Much of this energy use takes place in buildings, such as our homes. To save money and reduce the impact on our environment, people should reduce their energy use.

Page 23: Discovering the World Through English

23

The top 10 ways we waste energy and water in buildings

• Leaving lighting, heating or cooling systems on during the night.

• Keeping computers, printers and other computer

equipment on all night or weekend when it is not

being used.

• Keeping lights on all day even when sunlight

could be used to illuminate a space properly.

• Running heating and cooling systems at the same time.

• Sprinklers that do not work correctly and are

watering streets, sidewalks, and driveways.

• Sprinklers that turn on during rainstorms or are

activated at the warmest, sunniest times of day.

• Using a water hose to ‘sweep’ balconies and yards instead of using

a broom.

• Leaving doors or windows open even when air conditioning is on.

• Keeping our fridge and freezer full uses too much energy.

• Having baths instead of showers and leaving the tap on when

brushing our teeth.

Page 24: Discovering the World Through English

24

Top 5 Energy-Sucking ‘Vampire’ Appliances

The TV Plasma TVs can suck up over 1,400 kilowatt hours

annually, which can cost over $150.

Video games Game consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii can waste around 230 kilowatt hours a year, which is around $25.

The laptop It costs about $15 in wasted energy.

Cell Phone chargers

DVD player It wastes 78 kilowatts a year. That's around $8.

10 ENERGY SAVING TIPS

Saving energy isn't just about protecting the environment -

it's also a great way to save money. Try these energy

saving tips.

Stay warm, cut costs. Turning your thermostat down by 1°C can

save you as much as $60 per year.

Get cosy. Wearing more jumpers, socks and

slippers around the house, and putting an extra

blanket on the bed means you won't turn the

heating up.

Turn the pressure down on the power shower and turn the tap off

while you are brushing your teeth.

Make things easy for your fridge and

freezer. Empty space in your fridge or

freezer saves, not only space, but energy too.

Heat your home with cooking. Leave the

oven door open after cooking to let the heat warm your kitchen.

Shrink your bills, not your clothes. If you

wash your clothes at 30-40 °C you're saving energy

and money.

Hang up your

laundry. Air-dry your

laundry rather than tumble-dry it if

there's warm or windy weather.

Switch it off and save. Unplug all the

appliances that you aren't using regularly.

Let the sunshine in. On a sunny day, opening your curtains will

let warmth into your house.

Get solar panels. Having solar panels

installed on your house could save you as much as

a third on your electricity bills.
