Themes, Style Sets, Colors and Fonts

A theme is a set of formatting choices that can be applied to an entire document and includes style sets, theme colors, fonts, and effects. Themes are preformatted and given names. The diagram on the right demonstrates the type of themes that are provided for use in Word 2016. Each specific theme has been given a name, so all you do is click on the theme and it will be inserted into the document.

Once you have a theme, you can now change the style set, color and font and add effects simply by selecting the drop-down arrows to the right of each of the options.

Style Set

You can add a specific style set to your document. Each style set has a specific name. A style set affects the type of fonts and spacing allotted in a document.

You can hover over each of the styles and Word will automatically show you how the document will look if you were to select that style.

Colors and Fonts

After adding the style to a specific document, you can then change the color and the type of font used in the document by selecting the colors and fonts icon (see the two diagrams on the right).

Paragraph Spacing

The Paragraph spacing option allows you to change the paragraph spacing. If hold your cursor over each of the built-in option, it will provide you with the before and after spacing as well as the actual line spacing of the document.

In the example on the left, the Compact style set has been selected. This type of style set has 0pt before spacing, 4pt spacing after the paragraph and puts the entire document on single spacing.

Page Background Toolbar

There are three options underneath the Page Background toolbar ribbon. They are: Watermark, Page Color and Page Borders.

Text Watermarks

When you click on the drop-down menu right below the Watermark icon, a drop-down menu will open (see image on the right). You are given a scroll bar on the right side of the drop-down menu that allows you to scroll through to view the text watermark options. To insert a text watermark, click on the watermark you want to insert and it will automatically be placed in the document behind the text.

Custom Watermark

You can also customize a text watermark. Customizing a watermark means that you can add your own text, choose your font style and size as well as the color of the watermark. You can also choose an image as a watermark.

Page Borders

You can add several different types of borders to a document. You can add a border around text or you can add a page border. There are three tabs at the top of the Borders and Shading dialog box: Borders, Page Border and Shading.

Borders

The first tab on the Borders & Shading dialog box is the “Border” tab. The “Border” tab is used when you want to add some form of border around text or paragraphs.

In the first column, you will see “Setting”. This column allows you to choose the type of border you want to insert: none, box, shadow or 3-D.

Chapter 4 Exercises will include new information from the Design tab as well as skill sets learned in Chapter 1, 2 and 3. Throughout each chapter, you will be building on and using skill sets that you have learned in previous chapters.

Create a folder on your flash drive called “ISS Word.” Inside that folder create a folder called “Chapter 4”. Inside that folder, create a folder that contains your first and last name. This is the folder that house all your completed Chapter 4 exercises. As you complete each exercise, please make sure you show me your work AS YOU COMPLETE THEM. Do NOT wait to show me more than two exercises at a time. It takes too long to grade exercises if I must grade more than two. When you have finished all exercises, I should be able to give you your final grade.

This handout is your guide for helping you complete your Chapter 4 Exercises. When you are working with new features in the exercises, if you are not sure how to use them, you are to come back to this handout and work your way through the examples. It is your job to figure out how to use each feature. Do not expect me to come over and tell you how to do them step-by-step—I will not do this because that is what this handout is for…it is your guide. If your features do not function properly, or you are having difficulties, I am available. My first step will be to ask you to show me the steps you used for the feature. If you have not even attempted to use the feature, or you have not reviewed it in the handout, I will tell you to look it up in your handout and call me back if you still cannot figure it out.

Make sure you are doing your own work. If you are caught cheating, regardless if it is one or all exercises, you will receive a “0” for the exercises in the Chapter. For those of you who have friends in the class, be careful…lazy people are not stupid. They know they can make you feel guilty and they will find a way to manipulate you into giving them your work. They will come up with tons of excuses as to why they did not do their work…it all comes down to the fact that they simply choose not to do it. Just remember: they do not care whether you receive a “0” if you are caught; they only care about themselves. If they cared about you, they would not ask to copy your work because the risk to you would be too great. So, be smarter than them and say, “Do you own work and learn the material so that you can pass the MOS exam!” That way, you are demonstrating “true” friendship because you care about their well-being!
