Discovering Enterprise Services of SAP Solutions using SAP Solution Maps

A quick guide to Solution Maps and Solution Composer tool

Objective of this Document

At SAPPHIRE 2005, SAP presented the progress made with the Enterprise Service

Architecture initiative. SAP showcased many examples of business process

flexibility, extensibility and multi-channel access using the enterprise services. In this

document, we will:

• Briefly discuss enterprise service inventory published as part of SAP Industry

Solution Maps

• Give an example to navigate to the inventory in a Chemical Industry Solution

Map

• In the appendix describes the Solution Composer and Industry Solution Maps

with its elements

Enterprise Service Inventory

Enterprise services are the result of service-enabling SAP’s solutions using the

guiding principle values of:

• User productivity

• Process Innovation

• Business Efficiency and Process Automation

• Flexible Deployment

Using these enterprise services, the solutions can achieve process flexibility,

extensibility and multi-channel access. The Enterprise Services are being documented

in the Enterprise Services Inventory. The inventory allows customers and partners to

learn about the available enterprise services of SAP Solutions and plan their solution

road maps towards Enterprise Services Architecture.

This list of enterprise services is the enterprise service inventory. SAP will publish

the inventory later in 2005 with completely availability information so that our

customers and partners can create an educated plan for their solution strategy.

The Enterprise Service Inventory project lists enterprise services and enterprise

service operations. The inventory will have the:

• Implementation independent Service definition with detailed description

• Provider(s) ( or implementations ) of an enterprise service and enterprise

service operation with implementation specific details and availability schedule

• Consuming scenario(s) and process(es) of an enterprise service with consumer

specific details

• Technical details, in form of WSDL, needed to use the enterprise services

• The capability to search in many alternative ways and discover enterprise

services

The roles that will find inventory useful are:

• business analyst to discover the services needed to meet the changing business

needs

• Technical Architect to clearly understand the business context of the enterprise

service

• Technical developer to understand the interfaces, input and output parameters

needed to use the enterprise service

Note, that the Enterprise services in the inventory of the preview system do not

represent the final enterprise services list that will be published later in the year. The

preview system and the enterprise services herein are provided to our partners and

customers to gain experience.

Navigation for the Enterprise Services Inventory.

There are two ways of navigating:

1. The enterprise services pool approach where you start will all the enterprise

services published by SAP

2. Another way is to navigate from the solution maps, drilling down to the

scenarios -> processes-> and discovering the enterprise services associated

with each process

Navigation using the Enterprise Service Pool

Go to the ESA Preview System page on SDN. The page will look similar to the

screenshot given below. In subsequent screenshots, the focus area will be indicated

using the red circle.

Click on the “All Enterprise Services Pool”. It will list the functional areas.

For this example, click on “Supply and Demand Matching” functional area. This will

show list of enterprise services available in the functional area.

Click on the “Supply and Demand Matching Enterprise Services”. This will lead to

enterprise services operations available in the enterprise service. In this example, we

see two enterprise service operations.

Click on “Product Availability Query Response”. You will come to enterprise service

operation description.

You will see different links at this level. The most interesting are:

a. “Where Used”. This lists all the solution maps and processes that have

association with this enterprise service operation

b. “Detailed Description” will provide you detailed description of the enterprise

service operation which will help you in evaluating whether this enterprise

service operation is the right one for your need.

c. “Inbound” and “Outbound Interface Definition” will give to complete WSDL

description of the enterprise service. The example of WSDL is provided in the

screenshot below.

d. “Inbound” and “Outbound Interface Documentation” gives documentation on

how to use the interface with details about the parameters.

Navigation using the Industry Solution Map

Goto the ESA Preview System page on SDN. The page will look similar to the

screenshot given below. In subsequent screenshots, the focus area will be indicated

using the red circle.

Click on the “Chemical Solution Map”

Click on the “Sales & Marketing” Business Scenario Group. This will take you to the

business scenarios available in this group.

Click on the “Order to Cash” business scenario. This will lead to the business

processes part of the business scenario.

Click on the “Sales Order Processing” business process. This will lead to the

description of the business process and all the available business context and details

like business goals, objectives, KPIs and such.

At each business process, you will see all the enterprise services or enterprise service

operations associated to the business process on the right hand side of the page. In

this example, you can see “Sales Order Processing Enterprise Service” and “Product

Availability Query Response” enterprise service operation associated to the business

process “Sales Order Processing”.

For the example, click on “Product Availability Query Response”. This leads to the

enterprise service operation description as shown below.

From this point, the navigation was already described earlier when we described

navigation using the “Enterprise Services Pool” approach.

Appendix: SAP Solution Composer and Industry Solution Map explained

Solution Composer is an offline PC tool provided by SAP to help visualize, plan, and

implement a solution within a company. Industry Solution Maps are offered as

business content in the SAP Solution Composer.

The different elements of an Industry Solution Map is explained in the three slides

below. Essentially, the hierarchy is as follows – Industry Solution Map -> Business

Scenario Group -> Business Scenario -> Process. At process level (see Level 3) you

will see the enterprise services.

Level 1 shows the Business Scenario Groups and Business Scenarios relevant for a

particular industry segment.

Enterprise Services
