Daniel Coyle in his new book, The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly
Successful Groups, talks about designer and engineer Peter Skillman who put forth a challenge to four-person groups at Stanford, the University of California, the University of Tokyo, and a few other places. The challenge was this: build the tallest structure using only: twenty pieces of uncooked spaghetti, one yard of scotch tape, one yard of twine, and one marshmallow. The only requirement was that the marshmallow had to be at the top of the structure.
Some teams consisted of business school students. Other teams later added to the challenge were CEOs and lawyers. And oh yeah, a team of kindergartners. The adult teams were competent, rational, organized, and strategic in their approach. The kindergartners took a different tact. They weren’t organized or analytical and didn’t use any “strategery.” Instead, they barely talked. They stood close together. They just started building side by side. One observer of the five-year olds noted they “just started trying a bunch of stuff together.”
Here are the results and averages from dozens of trials of the height of the structures:
Kindergarteners: 26 inches tall
Business School Students: 10 inches tall
Lawyers: 15 inches tall
CEOs: 22 inches tall
None of the adults beat the kindergartners! Psychologists analyzed these results and believe that the adults appeared efficient, but were actually spending an enormous amount of time figuring out status and position, wondering Who is in charge? Is it OK to criticize other people’s ideas? What are the rules? The children, however, seemed disorganized on the surface, but were anything but. They were working together, taking risks, spotting problems, and most importantly not jockeying for status. Kids aren’t so much smarter as they work together smarter.
Jesus was on to this centuries ago when he said, “In truth I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:17) This Lenten season is a time for us to repent, to humble ourselves, and to be open like kindergartners. Immanuel, let us be childlike, yet never childish. Let’s be open to trying new things, working together shoulder to shoulder, side by side. Let’s be open to the Holy Spirit and trying things in new ways. And who knows, maybe we’ll build together by God’s grace a 27-inch tall spaghetti, scotch tape, twine, and marshmallow building to God’s glory!

New in 2018—The Summer Organist & Bell Choir Director Dedicated Fund

Our traditional expression of worship has been a blessing to so many of us over the years and is also one of the key reasons new people who love traditional music join our faith community. The Summer Organist and Bell Choir Director Dedicated Fund is a great avenue for you to express your appreciation and commitment to traditional music at Immanuel. The over and above gifts given to this dedicated fund will enable Immanuel to bring on staff in 2018 a summer organist and part-time bell choir director (October-May of each year) to provide needed support to our Traditional Music Director for our growing traditional worship program. Your designated gift (written to Immanuel with “Summer Organist & Bell Choir Director Fund” in the memo) will go directly to offset this new financial giving opportunity at Immanuel. When the fund reaches its yearly capped amount of $8000 to fund the two positions for the year, any excess will flow into the General Budget of that year.

Brazilian Missioinaries
Elias Coelho de Assis and his wife, Lenita, met in the seminary of the Independent
Presbyterian Church of Brazil in the 1980s. Elias and Lenita had a heart for
reaching the more than 200 Indian tribes scattered throughout Brazil. They are
among the some 6,000 other Brazilian Protestant missionaries, in Brazil and
beyond.
In 1991 they began their ministry among the Daw (the name sounds similar to
“dough”), a tribe of people from the Upper Red River deep in Amazonia, as
reported in the Presbyterian Mission Crossroads.. They were previously enslaved,
abused, and raped by the people around them, and their numbers had diminished
to just 63 in 1983. Elias and Lenita came after the work had begun, and remained
for a decade, sharing the gospel, treating medical needs, and teaching the
children.
It was not easy for Elias and Lenita to gain the trust and confidence of the Daw
Indians. Death was common from alcohol abuse, drowning, and heat stroke. New
converts were ridiculed by others. The break though came one day when,
unwittingly, one of the missionaries drank coffee from the same gourd cup as the
Indians, something non indigenous Brazilians do not do. The reaction was
immediate: he was considered one of them, and an effective ministry began.
Today the 120 Daw Indians have their own territory, produce their own yucca flour,
and maintain a school in their own language. More than 30 can read and write in
their own language as well as in Portuguese. There are three native teachers, a
result of the literacy programs in their language. There is also a church with over
40 baptized members, and nearly all members of the community attend church.
Totes For Kids
The Immanuel Mission Team has taken a “leap
of faith” and has agreed to provide Totes For
Kids every week at Booth-Fickett K-8 Magnet
School! We will work with the Haven Totes pro-
gram at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church.
Haven Totes is a faith-based ministry that forms
partnerships with churches and businesses, so
that working together, we can provide nutritious
food for children and families who may not otherwise eat on the weekends
or during school breaks. Haven Totes, Inc. is a non-profit Charitable
Organization (501( c ) ( 3 ).
A room to store food has been provided at Fountain of Life Church. We
have been sorting food and packing the totes on Thursday mornings and
then delivering them to the school. In order to cover each week of the
month, we have 4 teams of 3 volunteers each. Food boxes will be packed
and given to the parents when there is a school break. Parents give
permission for their children to participate in the program and right now we
are packing 17 totes each week. Our hope is to reach 30 kids by the end of
the year.

we begin this new adventure in
mission we are reminded of the
words of Jesus in Matthew 25 - to
care for the “least of these” - our
children.
SUPPORT TOTES FOR KIDS
Totes for Kids is part of Haven Totes, Inc - a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Immanuel has volunteers
sorting, packing, and delivering Totes each week to hungry kids at Booth-Fickett School. Haven Totes, Inc.
currently partners with 7 churches to provide 17 schools with the Totes For Kids project.
Tax Credit funds have played an important role in purchasing food for the kid’s Totes. You can help by
sending your Arizona Charitable Tax Credit to Haven Totes, Inc. You can donate through the online website
www.haventotes.org with PayPal or by downloading a paper form to send directly to Haven Totes. If you need

Lenten Season Schedule
2018 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church
Holy Week:
Sunday, March 25th: Palm Sunday. Alternative Service at 8:30am. Traditional Service at 11:00am. Palm
branch processional.
Thursday, March 29th: Maundy Thursday. Traditional Service at 7:00pm with Communion and hand
washing.
No services on this Good Friday (we will alternate between a Good Friday service and Easter Vigil each
Holy Week).
Saturday, March 31st: Easter Vigil. Service in the desert sanctuary at 7:00pm. Communion and luminaria.
Sunday, April 1st. Easter Services:
Sunrise Service in the desert sanctuary at 6:30am. Communion. (Note location change)
A light brunch will be served after the Sunrise Service in Witherspoon Hall.
Alternative Service in the sanctuary at 8:30am with Communion. Nursery open.
Easter Egg Hunt in between services; gather in Towner Hall.
Traditional Service in the sanctuary at 11:00am with Communion. Nursery open.
No Sunday School on Easter.

9:45am.

Meet your Deacon Sunday, March 11th during Fellowship after
both the 8:30 a.m. service, and the 11:00 a.m. service. What a
great way to meet new people, enjoy some fellowship,
and...meet your Deacon! We hope to see you there!
What Is Desert Sages?
It's a way to make new friends. It's a way to get to know your church family. It's a way out of loneliness. It's a way to hone your game skills. It's a way to have fun! Every Tuesday from 10am-12pm, we meet in Witherspoon Hall to play Rummicube, bridge, poker, hand & foot, Mexican train and anything else you want to play. We take turns bringing refreshments that we share at noon. If you want you can pitch in $1 each week, and every six weeks or so we have a luncheon provided from that money. We usually have 35-45 participants a week. You do not have to come every week. Just come when you can. Winter residents are very welcome. GriefShare Group
6-Week GriefShare Group Beginning Sunday, April 15th 9:45-10:45 am Towner Hall Rooms 4&5 Facilitated by Rev. Norm Bagaas and Rev. John Tittle
Have you been dealing with grief in your life, either from a recent loss or a loss in the past? We want to offer help and encouragement after the death of a spouse, child, family member or friend. This support group will help you along the journey of grief after the memorial service, after the sympathy cards have been read, and after everyone else has gone back to normal life. Our GriefShare group will meet for six weeks on Sunday mornings beginning April 15th and will provide a warm and caring environment that for many people is an oasis on the long journey of grief. These sessions contain a video seminar, small group discussion, and a workbook for personal study. More information can be found at www.griefshare.org. We hope to see you there!

and 9:00 a.m. The person making the delivery to Casa Maria
leaves promptly at 9:00 am. Each lunch should contain two
sandwiches of your choice (no mayo or mustard), a piece of fruit,
and a dessert (a couple of cookies, a granola bar, etc.). You may
make as many lunches as you desire. You may add extras to the
lunches, if you’d like. Remember that many of the folks who receive
these lunches have problems with their teeth. Please consider this
when purchasing fruit or other hard-to-eat foods. Please help
Immanuel reach our goal of 500 lunches.

Immanuel Session Retreat
We had a great session retreat February 2-3rd
! Immanuel, we are indeed blessed with such a strong group of elders!
The theme for our session retreat was IKIGAI: the Japanese word for “the thing that gets you up out of bed in the
morning”. IKIGAI is that place where your passion, mission, and vocation intersect. We sought to tap into our individual
and collective IKIGAI at Immanuel. An so we ate, prayed, sang, played Japanese board games, attempted origami,
learned about IKIGAI from the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, laughed, and visioned together. The Wallendorf’s
not only let their home be our retreat center, but Liz cooked some amazing meals for us. We’ve got a great year ahead
of us, Immanuel!

The women of Immanuel are holding our annual bake sale on Sunday, March 18 after both services. All women of the church are members of the Presbyterian Women's Association. The proceeds raised from the bake sale are used to send two representatives from our church to the national triennial gathering. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet members of PW from all over the world.
Please help us make this experience possible by: -furnishing homemade baked goods -buying baked goods -making a donation if you are on a diet ☺ Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Lydia Circle meets the third Monday of every month in Witherspoon
Hall, rooms 9 and 10, at 6:00pm. Lydia Circle is made of working
women and stay-at-home mothers who can’t come to the Agape Cir-
cle in the daytime. Amanda Leachet (928-432-1347), and Kay
Schmidt (520-549-8823) are heading our group. March 19th we will
be studying Lesson 5: In Community With the Tradition of the Past.
New Year, New and Expanded Hospitality!
As we welcome in the New Year with resolutions and
new ideas, your Immanuel Hospitality Team has been
brainstorming some ways to expand coffee hour! We
love being able to set out a big spread of snacks that
lets everyone nibble and visit while sipping coffee during Sunday School or while chatting in Witherspoon Hall!
However, some times the snack selection is slim! Help us expand the selection each Sunday and grow the
Coffee Hour!
In the spirit of “New Ideas for a New Year,” we are going to try something a little different…and we hope you will
embrace this with us and give it a whirl! Trust us, the results will be delicious!
Each month will be assigned a letter or letters, if your last name begins the letter for the month, you are asked to
bring a snack to share on ONE Sunday that month for the service you attend! Spread the love: choose the third,
fourth, first, or second Sunday, pick your favorite! Check out the list below and find which month corresponds to
the first letter of your last name. Drop off your goodies in Witherspoon Hall prior to one of the services on a
Sunday during your month; the Hospitality Team will do the rest! Some items will be used the same day, others
will be saved for other Sundays! (It depends on what kind of goodies arrive!).
Here are a few ideas for Coffee Hour snacks: Cookies, Fruit, Veggies and dip, Cheese, crackers, Finger
sandwiches, Baked breads, Sugar free snacks, Gluten free snacks, chex mix, popcorn. Freshly baked and
packaged items welcome!

of the preparers are trained and certified and all returns are double-checked before e-filing.
