fennelFennel is a kind of vegetable, but you can

eat the bulb, stalks, leaves, seeds and even the flower. It has a strong, sweet flavor that

tastes a little like licorice. It can be eaten raw in salads, cooked, roasted and even

used to make tea.

carrotsCarrots are root vegetables which means they live in the soil, but you can tell they’re growing because you can see their tall, green leaves. They like lots of space to grow, but if you don't have a vegetable patch, then a roomy bucket

or container is fine. Because they only need watering every now and then, they are very easy to care for.

beetsBeets are bright pink or purple and can turn your fingers a funny color! They’re packed with vitamins and minerals. Beets grow in the ground and like to have lots of room.

Once they’ve grown to the size of a tennis ball, they’re ready to be picked. They taste

sweet, so you can eat them for dinner or even use them in a dessert!

DID YOU KNOW?In the 19th century,

women would use beet juice to dye their hair!

parsleyParsley is an herb that people like to add to their food for flavor. It’s great for growing at home because it doesn’t need much apart from water and a little sunlight. When it’s big enough, just pick as much as you need and the rest can keep on growing. Take good care of your plant and it could live for up to two years. 9

broccoliThis vegetable is in the same

family as cabbage, brussels sprouts and kale. The part of broccoli you eat is actually the baby flowers that haven’t opened yet. Make sure you pick your

broccoli before the flower heads open, otherwise it will taste bitter.

turnipsTurnips are root vegetables and

grow in the ground – just like carrots. They’re popular because

they grow really well in cooler climates. In fact, they can taste

sweeter if they’re harvested just after a frost. Some people eat them

raw, but most people like to boil, roast or mash their turnips.

iceberg lettuce

This type of lettuce has crisp, crunchy leaves that go great in a salad. It likes to grow in cooler

temperatures and can grow very quickly, so it won’t be long until

you see results. When it’s time to harvest your iceberg

lettuce, it’s best to cut it out, rather than pulling.

cucumbersCucumbers grow on vines and are

actually a fruit instead of a vegetable! You can plant the seeds in the ground, in a pot,

or in a grow bag. They only need a little water and they love sunshine. Cucumbers are great to eat in salads or chopped into

sticks for a healthy snack.

scallionsScallions are actually just regular

onions that are picked when they are very small. They don’t taste as strong and they don’t make

your eyes water either! With the exception of the root, you can eat the whole vegetable;

it tastes great raw or cooked.

cherry tomatoesThey are called cherry tomatoes because they can grow to be asbig as cherries. The cherry tomato is a tropical plant, which means it likes warm and wet weather. They are easy to grow as long asthey get lots of water, warmth and some extra support when the plant gets tall and wobbly. When the tomatoesturn a bright red color, they are ready to be picked! eggplantThe eggplant is actually a type of berry, but

we eat it like a vegetable because of the way it tastes. It’s part of the nightshade family, which

sounds spooky, but it’s not at all – in fact, the plant likes to grow in sunny, sheltered places.

When the eggplant is a shiny dark purple color, it’s ready to be picked!

Leaf lettuce has tender leaves that branch out from a single

stalk. The best thing about growing your own lettuce is that you can pick it whenever you’re

ready to eat it. Its leaves wilt faster than other types of lettuce, so it’s best to eat them not

long after picking.

radishesRadishes are small, red and spicy. That’s

because they’re part of the mustard family! Radishes are a great plant for young gardeners because they grow very quickly and are happy to live in

a container or window box. Most people just eat the roots, but you

can also eat the leaves too.

kaleKale is a dark, leafy green vegetable that contains lots of healthy nutrients. Just like broccoli, kale is also from the cabbage family. People like to eat it in salads, stews and even put it in smoothies. Once your kale plant is big enough, you can pick the leaves you need and leave the rest to keep growing.

leeksLeeks are actually from the same family as the onion, but they taste milder and much sweeter. They have white stems,

green leaves at the top, and lots of layers, like their cousins. They’re

delicious in soup!

thymeThyme sounds just like time and is a

great herb to have at home! It’s a tough plant, so it can survive a cold winter and doesn't

need lots of watering. You can use the leaves from your thyme plant to flavor

food like pasta and meat.

basilBasil was originally native to India

and is used in cooking around the world, from Vietnam to Italy!

It likes hot weather and lots of sunshine. Once you’ve grown

your basil plant, it’s very easy to propagate, which means taking

little cuttings and using them to grow even more basil plants.

They grow on a vine like tomatoes and can be red, yellow, orange or green.

They like to grow in warm weather, which helps them get a nice, sweet flavor.

Make your own bird feeder

Ask your Mom or Dad to buy an orange, peanut butter, some string and bird seed.

Scoop out the content of the orange.

Pierce holes in the side of the orange skin ‘cup’.

Spread some peanut butter into the orange skin, and add the seeds.
