But now the collectors club is feeling its femi-nine side. Women are no longer satisfied with quartz movements that simply tell the time of day or watches that merely look great. Lovers of luxury are complementing their Manolo Blahniks and Hermès Birkin bags with the understated elegance of complex mechanical timepieces.
Sales of women’s watches retailing above $25,000 increased 35 percent in the last two years, accord-ing to the LGI Network, which tracks luxury spend-ing. This was reflected at the Basel watch fair in Switzerland this year, where one of the strongest trends was a focus on fine women’s watches.
The prestigious journal, International Watch, marked the start of this evolution with the 2008 launch of IW Ladies, a quarterly watch magazine for women. According to the inaugural issue, every woman needs at least ten watches for a good luxury watch wardrobe. Female collectors are interested in everything from the diamond-encrusted Ebel Classic to the oversize Ernst Benz ChronoLunar with 44mm dials usually reserved for men.➤

Building this watch wardrobe doesn’t have to hurt your wallet. Caribbean tax- and duty-free pricing puts even luxury brands and collectible pieces within reach of the average cruiser. Popular-price brands are also responding to the trend in women’s mechanicals and offering affordable options. This season, Bulova presented the BVA-Series 130 for under $500 (see it on pg. 94), while Raymond Weil’s Noemia starts at under $2,500. Port & Shopping Guide Karen Taylor, 29, is a prime example of the trend. “I like wearing understated luxury,” she says. “Not everyone recognizes the worth of a great timepiece but when they do, I know they speak my language. It’s like being a member of an exclusive club where only other collectors know the password.”
In the course of her job working on a cruise ship, Australian-born Taylor helps cruise guests visiting the Caribbean to source great deals on hard-to-find watches on a weekly basis. She owns an impressive personal collection of 27 mechanical timepieces. Her current favorite? A man’s Hublot.
“A fellow collector recently told me that a woman sporting a man's mechanical is akin to a woman in nothing but a man’s shirt,” Taylor said. “I’ve been wearing this watch a lot ever since!”

Only in the industrialized society, when “time is money” became the motto of the as-sembly line, did precise time-telling become really relevant.
Yet the watch remains. And the wrist-bound teller of time that’s most relevant today expresses, not our zeal to be up to the minute, but our enduring appreciation of the old-school values of craftsmanship and extraordinary attention to detail. The watch we choose tells the world, paradoxically, that we’re not beholden to the clock; that we are making our own destiny in our own time; that we demand beauty that matches or surpasses functionality.

need not be complicated. Below are commonly used watch terms.
Bezel: The ring surrounding the watch dial (or face). The bezel is usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel. Originally, the bezel was the glass ring in the case that was snapped with the pressed-in crystal onto the center part of the watch case. Decorative and rotating rings are often called “bezels” today.
Case: The protective cover on a watch. Cases are available in a variety of types and materials and come in many shapes (round, square, oval, rectangular, barrel-shaped or pillow-shaped).
Complication: An additional mechanism in mechanical wrist-watches that can be made only by specialists. The most important complications for mechanical watches include chronographs, calendars, retrograde indicators, striking works and alarms.
Crown: Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the button on the outside of the watch case that is used to set the time and date. In a mechanical watch the crown also winds the main-spring. In this case it is also called a “winding stem.”
Crystal: The transparent cover on a watch face made of glass crystal, synthetic sapphire or plastic. Better watches often have a sapphire crystal, which is highly resistant to scratching or shattering.
Quartz movement: Quartz crystals are very accurate and can be mass- produced, which makes them less expensive than most mechanical movements requiring a higher degree of craftsmanship.
Mechanical watch: A timepiece driven by a spring or weight and which has a balance or pendulum as a timekeeping element.
Self-winding mechanism: An additional mechanism using the wearer’s arm movements to tighten the mainspring of a mechanical watch. As the spring releases, it powers the watch.
Water resistance: Terms such as “water-resistant to 50 meters” or “water-resistant to 200 meters” indicate that the watch can be worn underwater to various depths.

Eva Longoria Parker soared to the top in Hollywood after heating up primetime on Desperate Housewives as Gabrielle, the seductress of Wis-teria Lane. In a previous season, she startled viewers by putting her darkly gorgeous looks on hold so that Gabrielle, looking positively frumpy, could care for her kids and blind husband. The good news in the seventh season: Parker is back to showing off her sexy side.
“Believe me, I didn’t mind leaving the frump behind,” she says, “especially after spending a lot of time in a fat suit with no makeup.”
Parker, 35, wasn’t exactly unknown before she joined the hit ABC TV series that has become a cultural phenomenon; she scored in a provocative role on the popular soap The Young and The Restless and played a detective on L.A. Dragnet.
The Texas native began to pursue acting in Los Angeles, after winning the title of Miss Corpus Christi. Her looks may have helped her get her start, but she says she doesn’t obsess about beauty.

Every look is set off by a pair of trademark stilettos from among the many pairs in her closet (5-foot-2 Parker is rumored to have close to 200). “They’re practically the only heels I wear,” she says. “They have to be at least four inches high. I’m so used to them, I think I should probably keep them on when I go to work out.”
Ironically, Parker's husband, San Antonio Spurs’ hard-driving forward Tony Parker, likes her to dress down a little. “He loves me without makeup, and he loves me in flip-flops and jeans,” she reveals. “His favorite time is when I wake up in the morning and I don’t have any makeup on. What’s driving her? “I feel so inadequate compared to how active my mom was,” she says. “She had four kids, one with special needs, and she was a teacher. My dad worked and every day she would have supper on the table at 6 p.m. before he would get home. I think she gave me an amazing work ethic. It just works well for me to be juggling ten things at once.”
Parker needed that drive when she opened Beso, a restaurant with a Latin flair, and Kiss, a late-night lounge, both in Hollywood. “I didn’t do it to have a celebrity restaurant,” she says. “I did it because I love the art of cuisine, and I love the experience of dining. Since Tony and I are big foodies, I wanted to create that same experience for other people. We feature dishes like guacamole, my Eva tortilla soup, and chili-rubbed flank steak.”
While she isn’t on the scene every night, Parker clearly cares about every detail. “I’m making sure everything is going well. I’m checking the food,” she says. “Beso is like my second kitchen, my second living room. I feel like it’s just an extension of who I am.” The establishment’s success led her to open another Beso—along with Eve nightclub—at City Center in Las Vegas.
Parker, who’s already been a high- profile face in commercials for L’Oréal Paris, helped develop Eva by Eva Longoria Parker, the first celebrity fragrance from Falic Fashion Group.
A DAUGHTER, A WIFE, A FRIEND“I wanted to create something that every woman could wear,” she ex-plains. “I didn’t realize how complicated it is to create a scent, but I think I’ve come up with something that’s extremely sexy.” To add to the allure, the perfume is sold in a bottle that imitates a woman’s curves.
When she isn’t working, Parker might be having fun with celebrity gal pals like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham. But it’s never all play and no work. She and Beckham joined forces in a commercial for LG mobile phones with the tag line, “Friends, Fashion, Fabulous.”➤

Parker still makes time to support a long list of charities. “I’m a woman, I’m a daughter, and I have a sister with a mental disability, so there are a lot of organizations doing good work that I have a connection with,” she says.
High on her list are causes that reflect her Mexican heritage. “I work a lot with the UFW (United Farm Workers), and I’ve been in the fields with immigrant farm workers,” she says. “And I’ve hosted, as well as produced, the American/ Latino Media Art Awards for several years. We’re in this big debate about future immigration laws and it’s colored by the often-negative media portrayal of Latinos in television. So for me to help find something positive is really important.”
Parker pauses to reflect on her journey to the top in a tough town. “I don’t regret anything I do, ever,” she says finally. “I don’t like to regret anything as far as what’s happened in the past. I wouldn’t take anything back. People think I’m an overnight success with Desperate Housewives, but I was working for eight years. 2. Get Prepared: Start by meeting your Port & Shopping Guide (PSG) onboard your cruise ship. This is the one person who can completely pre-pare you for the show. Your PSG will give you VIP Cards, raffle tickets, gift certificates, port maps and more.
3. Wake Up! Set your alarm so you can shop early an avoid disappointment. While designers will typically bring multiples of their best sellers, those will always be the first to go! Plus, with one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces on display, you don’t want to miss the chance to see the best selection.
4. Ready, Set, SHOP! Whatever you do, don’t hold back! This may be the shopper-tunity of a lifetime. Meet your PSG at the show to get fashion tips and advice to make the right purchase.

The recipe for success is finding fun and color in the little things! New York party planner Marcy Blum suggests using potted plants and colorful herbs to bring vivid colors to the table, then presenting them to guests as take-home gifts. Throw away those stuffy chafing dishes and use brightly colored vessels and dishes. No need for matching china—instead, spice it up by playing with different colors, shapes and designs.
For the kids, something as simple as coloring mats can go a long way. Famous for his infectious energy and love of cooking, celebrity chef Emeril lagasse is the perfect person to help inject some amusement into the daily dinner routine. “Cooking should be fun,” Lagasse says. “It’s all about sharing.” No matter how pressed for time he is, he says, “I’m all for bringing back family dinner hour…. After a busy week, it’s important that we all sit down and have dinner as a family.”
And he practices what he preaches, considering his typical week involves producing episodes for his newest shows, Fresh Food Fast on the Cooking Channel and Emeril Green on Planet Green, as well as broadcasting his radio show, Cooking with Emeril, on Martha Stewart’s Sirius Satellite channel. ➤

To achieve harmony in the kitchen, Lagasse delegates the responsibilities. “My wife Alden and the kids usually do the shopping, picking up fresh produce from the market. When I get in, we cook together and the kids are always right there to help.” Want more fun? Lagasse recommends injecting some multiculturalism into your meals. This process doesn’t have to be elaborate or even difficult—and everyone in the kitchen can get in-volved. One of Lagasse’s favorite dishes to make is gumbo, a dish with a deep history of influence from the Creole, French, Spanish and African cultures.
“You start by making a roux, slowly stirring it, adding vegetables, adjusting the seasonings. You taste it again, add another layer of seasoning. There are so many
different ways to make a gumbo, each chef has their recipe and secrets—but every step and every ingredient counts.”
While Lagasse enjoys making diverse foods, the final course often brings the most joy. Everyone can help make one of Lagasse’s most requested desserts (facing page): banana cream pie laced with caramel. Sharing duties turns the kitchen space into a fun zone for even the youngest members of the family.
“The bananas,” Lagasse says on his website, “while ripe, need to be firm, so that they hold their shape when pushed into place.” That means a child can employ a butter knife, or even a plastic utensil, to slice them, as the fruit will have plenty of give. And while all this merriment might tempt someone to revert back to slapstick, pie-in-the-face humor, you’ll want to eat this pie with a fork—before or after you’ve downed your gumbo with a spoon.

Banana filing instructions Combine 2 cups of the cream, the milk, 1/2 cup of the sugar, the vanilla bean, and the vanilla seeds in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil, whisking to dissolve the sugar. Remove from the heat. In a medium bowl, combine the egg yolks, eggs, cornstarch, and 1 cup of the sugar and whisk until pale yellow in color. Set aside. Whisk 1 cup of the hot cream mixture into the egg yolks. Gradually add the egg mixture to the hot cream, whisking constantly. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly with a large wooden spoon until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. (If mixture separates, re-move from the heat and beat with an electric mixer until thick and smooth.) Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a clean bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing down against the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator for about 4 hours. Graham cracker crust instructions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Combine the gra-ham cracker crumbs and sugar in a medium bowl and mix well. Add the butter and mix
well. Press the mixture into a 9-inch pie pan. Top with aluminum pie tin and with a circular motion, press the crust tightly into the pan. Bake until browned, about 25 minutes. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Makes one 9-inch crust.
Caramel sauce instructions Combine the sugar, water, and lemon juice in a medium, heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Let boil until the mixture becomes a deep amber color, 2 to 3 minutes, watching closely so it doesn’t burn. Add the cream, whisk to combine, and remove from the heat. Add the milk, 2 tablespoons at a time, until the desired consistency is reached. Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature before serving with the pie. (The sauce will thicken as it cools.) To assemble pieSpread 1/2 cup of the custard over the bottom of the prepared crust, smoothing with the back of a large spoon or rubber spatula. Arrange enough banana slices (not quite one-third) in a tight, tiled pat-tern over the custard, pressing down with your hands to pack them firmly. Repeat to build a second layer, using 3/4 cup of
the custard and enough bananas to cover, smoothing down the layer evenly.
For the third layer, spread 3/4 cup of custard over the bananas and top with the remaining bananas, starting 1 inch from the outer edge and working toward the center. Spread 1 cup of custard evenly over the bananas to pre-vent discoloration. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 4 hours or overnight. To serve Remove the pie from the refrigerator and add whipped cream. Drizzle each slice with the caramel sauce and chocolate sauce, and sprinkle with the chocolate shavings and confectioners’ sugar. Makes one 9-inch pie, 10 servings. Recipe has been slightly shortened (Emeril’s original calls for homemade chocolate sauce and whipped cream).

“Start small and break down prep work,” advises Kelly Lyden, editor and party planner for two Web sites (thepartydress.net and whhostess.com). She advocates mak-ing a simple plan for food, decorations and the guest list. Incorporating a theme can set the celebration’s tone and provide di-rection for decorations, Lyden adds.
Jennifer Sbranti, founder and editor-in-chief of hostesswiththemostess.com, suggests serving drinks as guests arrive. “People feel more comfortable having something to hang on to,” Sbranti explains. Setting up food and drink stations throughout the party room encourages mingling and good traffic flow. An activity (game or makeshift photo booth) supplies guests with something to break the ice and get the fun rolling, Lyden says.
Those who have planned a party can attest that the reason for throwing one is to have fun. But if thoughts of playing host stir up anxiety and intimidation, consider these entertaining ideas from some of the most colorful party Web sites around.

When you touch your bracelet, slip on your ring or adjust your watch, do you ever wonder who’s be-hind its creation? Well, we did—so we caught up with five of the world’s most recognizable designers and sat down with each of them for a chat. We learned some things we bet you didn’t know either:

Stavros EleftheriouOwner and Designer of KabanaAs founder of Kabana inlay jewelry, Stavros Eleftheriou is smitten with colors given to us by nature—the bright hues of flowers in his garden, natural stones from the earth and the vibrant sea life found on the ocean floor. With a personality as colorful as his collec-tions, Eleftheriou’s enthusiasm translates into vibrant, wearable art that begs to be touched.
When did you first know you wanted to design jewelry? In July of 1972 I took my first trip to the states. I was traveling through New Mexico when a jeweler showed me the craft and I made my first piece of jewelry in silver. I knew then I had found my life’s work.
What inspires you? Gardens and colors.
What is something people don’t know about you? I ride donkeys.
If you could be anywhere, where would you be? Mykonos, baby!
Glenn RothmanFounder and designer of Hearts On Fire
This entrepreneur and brand visionary gets his inspiration from a love of international travel and a devotion to the
improvement of mind and body. He is a voracious reader and disciplined yogi. But little compares to his ultimate pleasure: seeing Bruce Springsteen live. Glenn has attended over 100
Springsteen concerts around the world. He is also proud of his charity work with the Lenny Zakim Fund, a national
organization devoted to violence prevention and social and economic justice in his home city of Boston.
When did you first know you wanted to design jewelry? In 1996, after ten years of dreaming about how we could
clearly differentiate the diamond buying experience through diamond cutting, I discovered the formula for Hearts On Fire.
What is on your iPod? (although we already know the answer!) Springsteen

When did you first know you wanted to design jew-elry? I always loved colors, loved to put them together and loved to create things. I just never was able to find
the right platform to express it until I found jewelry.
What is on your iPod? A Spanish group called Chambao. I’m not fluent in Spanish but their music is beautiful!
What was the last book you read? Crashing Through is about a man that loses his sight at age 3, grows up,
gets married, has kids, and at some point gets his sight back. It’s a true story and highly recommended.
What are three things you can’t live without? My 21/2-year-old daughter, Sofia! She’s my first, and admit-
tedly, I have a prejudicial soft spot for her in my heart. I also love my TiVo. I can’t begin to even tell you what this
machine can do. And I can’t live without Starbucks!
Guy BedaridaCreative director and head designer of John HardyGuy Bedarida joined John Hardy over a decade ago and has become an integral part of the brand’s dy-namic vision for “sustainable luxury”—an idea distin-guished by a deep admiration for the cultures and environments in which John Hardy’s designs are created. Each piece is intricately made by hand and inspired by ancient Balinese metalworking traditions.
When did you first know you wanted to design jewelry? Born and raised between Italy and France, I have always been exposed to the beauty and luxury of elegance and fabulous festivals and ceremonies. Jewelry always attracted me and, at 12, I was already creating jewelry.
What or who inspires you? The Princess Helietta Caracciolo di Forino, a famous jewelry designer in the 1970s in Italy and a childhood friend of my mother. Also, there was a tradition in my home that my father gave beautiful pieces of jewelry to my mother to commemorate the major events of her life. These gifts were always an inspiration!
What is your drink of choice? An Italian cocktail from the 1960s called Negroni. Very kitsch—a real bomb—made of three equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth.

covet his hand-carved pieces.
When did you first know you wanted to design jewelry? My favorite classes in high
school were metal and woodworking, art and cooking—all creative classes. After visiting the
Fashion Institute in New York, I was sure this is where I belonged. Work became a love.
What inspires you? I believe artists and creative people are a different breed. Inspiration should come
naturally through a genuine curiosity of one's perspec-tive. People’s enthusiasm in wearing my jewelry and
how it makes them feel is tremendously gratifying.
What is something people don’t know about you? How much I truly love making jewelry, to a fault at times. I love my staff and when we collaborate to-
gether I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many other great people from all different cultures.
What is your drink of choice? Smoothie, lots of ice, made with real fruit only.
Ivanka Trump
Owner and designer of Ivanka TrumpThis young style icon juggles her roles as a real estate executive, jewelry designer, TV personality, NY Times bestselling author and a UN Foundation champion for the Girl Up campaign. Reflecting her personal standards of style and elegance, Ivanka takes inspiration from the poise and glamour of fashion’s most celebrated eras from the 1920s to the ’60s.
When did you first know you wanted to design jewelry? I’ve always been intrigued by the purity of a gorgeous diamond. Growing up with my mother, I was around fabulous jewelry all the time. In 2006, I realized that luxury jewelry had an oppor-tunity for niche positioning for a young, fresh, luxury jewelry line that highlighted important classic jewelry with a new modern twist. So, in 2007, I launched the Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry line with a jewel-box boutique on Madison Avenue.
What are your favorite jewelry pieces? My first important piece of jewelry was a diamond necklace gifted to me by mother on my 21st birthday—a present to her from my father for their 10th anniversary. From my line, I love the tassels and the signature ovals. For everyday boardroom attire, I love the mixed bead necklaces and the rose gold chains.
What is something people don’t know about you? I love to cook and host people for dinner.
What are three things you can’t live without? Family and friends, good food, and an organized calendar!
