And then there are themany delicious seafood restaurants especially in Peniche, which is a main fishingport. They make wonderful seafood stewslike Cataplan or Caldeirada, you won’t finda fresher catch and great value for money.

With the year rushing by, if you want to getinto the festive spirit visit Óbidos and you will see all the castle draped in beautiful fairy lights. It can be seen for miles aroundand you can wander along the cobbled streets with its Christmas market full of entertainment; view the individually decorated Christmas trees with festivelyadorned window boxes in nearly everyhouse. There are lots of festive treats withlocally produced gifts to buy. Not to mentionthe flurries of snow that cascade down fromthe roof top every 15 minutes. It’s not Disneyland but it certainly is its own special wonderland.

And for themore adventurous, there’s the thrills and excitement of kite surfing and paraglidinggrowing rapidly in popularity. As well as theother more regular sports that can be doneall year round here like canoeing, stand-uppaddle boarding, golf, with its world classcourses, especially at Praia D’El Rey, BomSucesso and the new contender designedby Seve Ballesteros at the Royal Obidos Resort. Or get on your bike if you feel like atruly exhilarating work out and head for theSerra de Montejunto mountains which offerover 120 kilometres of paths and cycletracks across its landscape. Now that’s agood way to work up a healthy appetite.

October at Supertubos beach. It has thebest barrel beach break in Europe and it isconsidered one of the most daring and exciting places to surf. The Meo Pro is followed by one of the most prestigious surfing events in the world. The Rip CurlWorld Surfing Championships in mid October, which has firmly established itselfon the beaches of Supertubos and Baleal.In fact depending on the swell the event canbe held anywhere along the Baleal beachfrom Lagido right up to Belgas near Praia delRey. It attracts the best surfers from everycorner of the globe and many new contenders to challenge for the title. It alsobrings between 30-40 thousand spectatorseach day to watch the events and be part ofall the excitement.

Word has it that Garrett McNamara, the 44year old Hawaiian surfer who broke theworld record last November by riding a 78ftwave in Nazaré, has now had a very specialwetsuit commissioned that is equipped withan oxygen pocket. This will help save his lifein the future should he ever be blessedenough to meet another epic wave here onthe exhilarating coastline we call home. Hedoesn’t expect it to happen in his nativeHawaii, he believes it will happen right hereand he’s looking for a 120ft monster. He ishoping and praying that day will come soon.So to be prepared he has military-gradeswell monitoring equipment and a private jetto bring him to the Silver Coast wave, thathe hopes to break his own world record on.We think we are going to hear more fromthis guy real soon.

There is a lovely candle shop in the Zona Industrial, Promol, Loja das Velas! It’s a little gem of a shop, right across the road

from Restaurant Lisboa. What’s even better isthe prices are great, every week they have special offers and candles which are slight seconds that they sell by the weight. They areone of the biggest candle manufacturers in Europe producing a whopping 1 million candlesper day. Their Portuguese market is small,around 6% of what they sell globally. 70% oftheir market is German, but they do sell to goodold M&S so that is definitely a bench mark ofquality and reassurance. All their products aremanufactured under the RAL quality safety standard requirements for candles and theirpackaging carries that labelling. The shop sellsa great selection of candles for every occasion,weddings, birthdays, dinner parties, gifts or simply to have around the house. They have apretty selection for Christmas, gold, silver, sparklyfilled glass candles as well as the traditional redones in many different shapes and sizes. Promol are now owned by a large Swedish company ALG who are always developing newideas. Currently they are producing their new completely natural range, which is really exciting,and many global companies are racing to puttheir orders in for these new products. Promolis certainly a shining light in the area.

We run a shop in Óbidos, where we sell allkinds of products that are made locally.What better way of getting to know the

region in which we live, than to go and visit thetalented artists, the skilled wine makers, family jammakers, nouveau chocolatiers, experts in fusedglass and families steeped in the history of makingliqueurs. Then we found exceptional talents suchas a self taught wood carver who has won awardsin Paris for his incredible sculptures.

We have a passion for fine food and wine, we really appreciate the skills of artists and craftspeople and we love to find traditional methodsand knowledge. Naturally we visit all of the regional fairs, gastronomic events, shows and exhibitions. There we have the opportunity tomeet the people behind the products, to taste thenew flavours and to meet the artists. We visit theirstudios and see their work; we go to the biscuitmakers and smell the freshly cooked biscuitscoming out of the oven; we visit the wineries andhave to undergo the obligatory tasting sessions;we have even done an olive oil tasting.

We choose the things that we like, that we canhonestly say are made in a traditional manner ormade with locally grown produce or by localartists; we hope that our customers appreciateour choices and will come back for more. vinhos Cortém is a young vineyard that hasbeen slowly developed by Chris price andhis wife Helga, turning what was once ahobby into a lifestyle.

Why did you setup a vineyard in the SilverCoast? In 1993 Helga and I had recently metand decided to come to Portugal for a holiday. We fell in love with the area and towards the end of the holiday decided tobuy a house. After a number of viewingsusing a local estate agent, we found thisplace in Cortém, which was a ruin with afantastic view over an unspoilt valley. Helgatook one look at the view and said shewanted to die here. So that was the start of our adventure. When did you produce your first wine? In 2006 we sold our first bottles of wine, wewere still in an experimental stage learningas we went along, going to seminars, talkingto people and of course with local help.Eventually we ended up with a 5 hectares ofvines planted and a fully equipped winery,and it was at this point, with all the annual

Após visitarmos váriosimóveis, utilizando um imobiliário local, encontramos este sítio em Cortém, que erauma ruína com vista sobre o vale preservado.Helga olhou sobre esta vista e disse que eraaqui onde ela queria falecer. Então foi aquique a aventura iniciou.Quando é que produziram o vosso

primeiro vinho?

Em 2006 vendemos as nossas primeiras garrafas de vinho, ainda estávamos numperíodo experimental a aprender pelo caminho, fomos até seminários, a falar compessoas e claro com ajuda da localidade. Finalmente acabamos por ter 5 hectares de

expenses needed for wine making and fieldwork, we realised that without wine saleshelping to pay we could not afford to makewine on a hobby basis. So I suppose at thispoint we began to figure out that makinggood and above all different tasting wineswould be the key to our success. When did you decide to go organic? In 2007 we started the process of achievingthe Organic certificate which takes 3 years.This means we do not use any pesticides,herbicides or industrial fertilisers on ourfields. In 2010 we received our certificate for Certified Organic Grapes.How would you describe your wines now?Well some of the feedback we have hadfrom clients is that they are dry, smoothwines and have more of a French style tothem, but my opinion is that our Syrah andJaen grapes produce a light and elegant redwine and our Cabernet Sauvignon is a heavier wine to be enjoyed by itself in a bigglass. We have always made our wines inthe same way, fermenting in small partlyopen tubs with hand stirring for at least two

Em 2007 decidimos tornar orgânico e iniciamos o processo necessário para alcançar o certificado Orgânico, que demora3 anos. Isto quer dizer que os nossos terrenos na levavam pesticidas, herbicidasnem fertilizantes industriais. Como descreve os seus vinhos

actualmente? O feedback que recebemosde alguns clientes é que o vinho é seco esuave, e tem mais parecença com o estiloFrancês. Na minha opinião os nossos castosde Syrah e Jaen produzem um vinho tintoleve e elegante e o nosso Cabernet Sauvignon é um vinho mais pesado para serapreciado sozinho num copo grande. Sempre produzimos os vinhos com da

weeks. All sugars are fermented in the tuband the wine has time to extract tannins andcolour from the skins. We only use a yeastfrom the champagne district and bacteria forthe malolactic fermentation. In January andFebruary of the following year we blend thewines into lots of 1500 or 2000 litres wherethey stay for 2 years in stainless steel tanks.So in the end we have up to 5 different redwines each year with about 2000-3000 bottles of each wine available.Have you won any awards for your wines? Yes, We have won a silver medal for ourJaen 2008 at the IWC 2011 in London anda silver at the Mundus Vini 2011 and bronze at the IWC 2011 for our Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009. Our most recentaward was a ‘Commended’ at the IWC2012 with our Syrah 2009. What was this year’s harvest like? This year due to the strange weather wehad, very dry, cold winter and late spring, itwas a very late harvest and we only finishedharvesting on the 26th October, where as inprevious years we would have finished 3weeks earlier. We had to wait another threeweeks for the grapes to ripen. They seemto be good and we have had double the volume of wine this year at 13000 litres. Letus see how they the wines turn out. Themalolactic fermantation has to take placefirst, there is a lot of acidity this year.Where do you see yourself in 5 years? At the moment the winery is suffering fromlack of space and we really need more tofunction efficiently. We have an old adegathat needs to be renovated and this couldbecome our winery of the future. Also in 5years I will be 76 and we think it is time tolook for a business partner to help with investment and the future of Cortém wines.We feel that we have built up the businessto a respectable level and it is now a goingconcern for a young wine enthusiast lookingto live in Portugal. We will certainly take partin the winemaking process in the comingyears as it is still our passion!

Parecem estar boas etivemos o dobro do volume este ano com13000 litros. A fermentação malolática é oprimeiro processo e este ano vimos que existe muita acidez.Onde acham estar daqui a 5 anos?

Neste momento a nossa adega está a sofrerpor falta de espaço e precisamos mesmo demais para funcionar de modo eficiente.Temos uma adega antiga que precisa de serremodelada e pode vir a ser a adega do futuro. Também daqui a 5 anos eu já terei 76anos e achamos que já está na altura deprocurar um sócio para ajudar com o investimento e o futuro de Vinhos Cortém.Sentimos que construimos este negócio aum nível respeitável e agora está pronto paraum jovem vinicultor entiusmado à procura de

Having stayed in several Silver CoastHotels over the years, what can I tellyou that is anything different or more

inviting about the Sana Silver Coast Hotel inCaldas da Rainha above the other local establishments?

Portugal has a great reputation for wines,cheeses, fish, many different styles of localfresh breads and yummy pastries. The selection here is gastronomical. Not tomention nearly every time you order a drinkit comes with some sort of side order treatof nuts, popcorn and a local sweet calledCavacas, which is served with the coffee.

Many people stay in Óbidos when visitingthe area, which is wonderful but often it ispacked with events and tourists. The Sanais less than 10 minutes away from Óbidos,or the great beaches of Foz do Arelho, andthe Óbidos Lagoon.
