Make plans now to visit the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show in October.

In its 174th year, and the fourth largest fair in Ontario, with over 120,000 visitors each year. the fair features agricultural displays, craft exhibits, food vendors, art demonstrations, talent competitions, midway rides, and celebrity chefs.

Each year, star performers entertain at the grandstand.

Enjoy an excitement-filled fair day where clouds of pink candy floss can stick to your fingers and the showmen beckon you to win the “doggee-doggee”! Where the carousels spin round and round, lights flash and the music plays on. All of this is at the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show in Simcoe, Ontario.

But if you’ve ever been to Ontario’s oldest agricultural fair, you also know why it deserves to be ranked among the province’s top fairs each year.

Listen carefully and you might hear the bleat of baby lamb, all part of the menagerie of livestock that tweak the cu-riosity of urban dwellers and undergo the scrutiny of those who know a champion when they see one. Listen carefully too for the sound of jingle bells. Wait a minute and a majestic team of horses will appear, outfitted in finery fit for a king! Add light harness racing, open western horse show, antique buggy classes, pony classes and jumpers to the mix you’ve got the largest outdoor horse show in Canada!

The grandstand features some extraordinary Canadian talent along with perennial fair favourites such as demoli-tion derbies, monster truck shows, tractor pulls and more. The educational programs attract students from near and far as they learn more about our food chain. All attractions and shows are included in admission to the fair.

Visit Norfolk County Fair every October

FAIR FACT

Celebrating the fair’s agriculture roots, over 10,000 entries each year compete in grain crops, fruits, vegetables, floral arrangements, culinary arts, handmade quilts, and crafts.

Sovereen Mills was established in the mid-1800s and provided a stimu-lus for the initial growth of the early village. In 1874, the mills were sold to the Quance family who produced door frames, window sash and fine woodwork until operations ceased in 1969 on the death of the owner. The mill was sold by the Quance family in 1987. The Town of Delhi purchased the old sawmill in 1975. The area surrounding it boasts a beautiful park that’s the backdrop for many wedding photos and is a great place were visitors can relax or catch a few fish.

Delhi is home to Canada’s only tobacco museum. Built in 1978 to replicate a tobacco pack barn, displays and artifacts tell the history of tobacco growing in Norfolk County, multiculturalism in the community, the story of those in other parts of Canada who migrated to the Tobacco Belt for work in the 1960s to 1980s. Stop in for a visit at 200 Talbot Road, Delhi; call 519-582-0278 for more information.

Altitude is an attitude. The world of flying is distinctive, a spirited, winged adventure that cannot com-pare to any other. Coasting on a summer’s breeze in a world so un-limited, it’s a pulse, a rhythm of the soul, for aviators everywhere.

Everything looks different from above. Tiny moving bubbles are ve-hicles busily hurry from place to place. The open air offers an escape from the day-to-day traffic and a freedom to reach higher and higher.

Just outside of the town of Till-sonburg there is an airfield. This is where local pilot David Brandon runs the Tillsonburg Flying School, as both an educational facility and a place where tourists can go to view Norfolk County from an alternative perspective.

Dave has been a pilot for 40 years. He took his first flight on March 1st 1975. As a young man, he spent every weekend learning to fly. He acquired

his Private Pilot license, then his commercial license and finally, 15 years later he achieved his Instruc-tor rating. He began his career as an instructor and has spent years teaching the majesty of the air.

In 2014, he began a new path teaching at the Tillsonburg Flying School and has 30 students attend-ing his classes at any given time. Learning to fly and acquiring a private pilot’s license requires a minimum of 45 hours flight time, 12 hours must be solo. Also, a stu-dent must attend ground school, one night a week for 17 weeks prior to the first flight. There is a written exam and then a flight test. To con-tinue learning a student must pass both.

The school uses a Cessna 150 or Cessna 172 for training and there is a pay-as-you-learn option. The course can be completed over three months or up to two years.

Aerial toursDavid also offers aerial tours of

the Long Point area. On the flight path from Tillsonburg to Port Row-an and on to Long Point, travellers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Norfolk County. The planes altitude reaches 5500 feet which allows vis-ibility of the furthest point at Long Point and on a clear day tourists can see all the way across Lake Erie.

The flight path circles over the In-ner Bay and towards Turkey Point, then on past the Sandhills towards Port Burwell, where the plane circles over the HMCS Ojibwa submarine, and then heads towards Aylmer and on home to Tillsonburg.

This tour is an experience to be remembered. And at a cost of $225.00 for up to three people, (max. weight 500 lbs) it’s hard to refuse this privi-lege. For information visit www.till-sonburgflyingschool.ca

From the beach at Turkey Point to all the other attractions in the area, a great area to explore.

Wagon Wheel Produce and Corn Maze at 1371 Charlotteville Road 7, shown above, has fresh vegetables all summer and fall and a 12 acre corn maze for young and old to enjoy. The farm is now also an agri-cultural fun and learning centre and also welcomes visitors for Cornstock Sept. 12, 13 & 14 and at Halloween.

The Second Sandbar in Turkey Point has reinvented itself and

customers are streaming through the doors.

Owners Carrisa Ayerhart and Chef Stephen Brown have harmo-

nized their vision of food and fun. The Second Sandbar is the place

to be. For those who want to get together for drinks or dine, Second

Sandbar’s reputation for excellent cuisine is well-deserved.

Enjoy delicious appetizers, homemade soups and bread and

home-made dressings for every selection.

Also delicious: the corn Fresca salsa, smoked brisket and Ha-

varti drizzled in barbecue sauce and served with peppered onion

rings. The salads are simply divine. The team have created their

own local menu of specialties showcasing fresh meat and cheeses,

as well as locally grown produce. The meals can be paired with a

wide selection of locally brewed craft beers and

wines to accommodate every palette.

Dessert brings new and equally divine treats!

Sit back and take it all in, the aromas, the tastes,

and the view. And after your unforgettable expe-

rience take a stroll on the beach right across the

street. It’s perfect.

Forty years ago, David Brown opened for business as D.A. Brown Re-alty from an office out of his parent’s home in Simcoe.

This local company has been serv-ing the Lake Erie area of Southwest-ern Ontario since 1974 and has two full-service locations in Simcoe and Port Dover to meet all your real estate needs.

From the company’s beginning and still today, it is the clients who are the priority. “To them, we pledge to offer quality, honest and courteous service, with integrity, without pres-

sure. We will use all the latest technol-ogy and tools available to our indus-try to help them answer their needs, achieve their goals and make their dreams reality.”

The head office location at 63 Queensway East, in Simcoe was pur-chased in 1977. In 1981, Dave’s brother Mike joined the office. In 1983, the 315 Main Street, Port Dover location was opened as a branch office and still serves the Lake Erie resort area today.

In 1997, after meetings with many national names in real estate, D.A. Brown Realty became an Associate Broker of Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd. and operates today as Royal LePage Brown Realty with 22 sales representatives and four dedi-cated office staff. David A. Brown is Broker/Owner of Royal LePage Brown Realty and W. Michael Brown is Broker-of-Record.

Simplifying your home search anywhere in Norfolk County and area

Helen Wilson always enjoyed visiting Port Dover, basking in the area’s relaxed, small town charm. So when the retired educator dis-covered Dover Coast, a new active-adult lifestyle community on the shores of Lake Erie, she knew she had found the perfect spot to start a new chapter in her life.

“There’s just a wonderful spirit here,” says Wilson, who moved to Dover Coast a year ago. “We all enjoy each other’s company.”

Located 90-minutes from the GTA, the 500-acre resort-style community will feature enclaves of Cape Cod-style bungalows, detached and townhomes around a links-style 18-hole golf course. Nine holes will be ready for play spring 2015. Overlooking the course’s 15th hole will be a private clubhouse with indoor/outdoor

pool, gym, party room and much more.

Dover Coast is in the first phase of a development that includes townhomes that range from 1250 square feet to 1547 square feet and detached bun-galows from 1200 square feet to 2442 square feet. Prices start at $263,900.00. All exterior main-tenance is handled by property management. “So it’s carefree living,” Wilson says.

The community’s centre of activity is David’s Restaurant owned by the development. With a lakefront setting, David’s boast three floors of fun; a restaurant, Elements Day Spa and the Double Olive with a renowned martini menu. Residents have member-ship with discounts at all three. Work is just about to begin on the

private deck on the lake. A leash-free dog zone is up and running and the pickle ball courts will be completed this summer!

To become part of this one-of-a-kind community, visit the Dover Coast Sales and Presentation Centre at 165 New Lakeshore Road in Port Dover. Models are avail-able to view and a new stunning 1400 sq. foot detached model will be ready soon. The office is open seven days a week from 12:00-5:00 for your convenience.

DOVER FACT

Port Dover light-house will soon be given by the federal govern-ment to Norfolk County. The legal work is underway. There was concern that the iconic and historic structure would be replaced by a light pole.

Dover Coast is active-adult lifestylecommunity offering “carefree living”

The Waterford Ponds and former rail lands have been redeveloped to enhance the outdoor experience for residents and visitors to Waterford.

Waterford

The Waterford Heritage Trail includes the 166 metre long Black Bridge with panoramic views of the Waterford Ponds.

Carol and Phil Ryan have been growing grapes and

making wine since 1996 at their farm on Concession 13,

west of Townsend. In 1996 they began construction on

a winery and are now in their seventh year of wine mak-

ing and retail. “We have learned about growing grapes

and making wine in Norfolk County by experimentation.

We have a very popular red that uses a newer German

grape called Regent, we are learning how to grow Syrah

(Shiraz), and have learned the reliability of grape va-

rieties like Riesling and Vidal. This year we produced a

“nouveau” red wine (lighter and lots of fruit) – in time

for the November 21 release of these wines at LCBO.

We are open every day in December to help with your

Christmas shopping. Please visit us at the winery, for

complimentary wine samples.”

Visit the Waterford Antique Market at 80-B Alice St. It is located in an his-toric building built in 1909.
