Since opening its doors in 1967, Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) have always worked with schools across the Humber to inspire the next generation and to raise awareness of engineering as an exciting and sustainable employment opportunity.

We believe that helping students make an informed choice about their career leads to the successful and enthusiastic engineers of the future.

We are aware of the schools obligation to provide all students with impartial information, advice and guidance (IAG) as part of the Education Act of 2011 and we would love the opportunity to work in partnership with you to meet these targets.

Inspiring enough young people to consider a career in engineering to solve the skills shortage requires work from parents, teachers and engineering businesses.

Ensuring young people are excited, and engaged will encourage them to make

STEM subject choices, which will help develop the engineering and technical skills required to solve global problems.

Our dedicated staff offer a range of FREE activities including CV writing, interview techniques and aspirational talks.

We can also offer more practical workshops at our training centres located in Hull, Scunthorpe and Stallingborough to give your students hands on experience.

All of these activities align with the careers strategy, supporting education to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers delivery.

All of our staff and activities are independently accredited by Matrix and draw on industry experience from our employer database of over 350 companies.

We are confident that our IAG schools programme will prepare your students for their next step – be it an apprenticeship, university and/or the world of work.

Welcome from our Chief Executive

Our work with schools and colleges inspires and supports young people to build their knowledge and understanding, develop their skills, and explore the exciting, diverse world of engineering.

The support we provide to schools varies and we will always try to tailor it to meet individual needs.

We can discuss what you would like to achieve from an activity and when you would like it to take place; we also offer more bespoke packages if required.

Ideas for new ways to collaborate and support each other are always welcome. For example, this year we developed individual Science, maths and English marketing materials for a specific school after a request.

If you are interested in any of our activities, please contact our Schools Engagement Team.

In the News A Scunthorpe teenager is celebrating landing an apprenticeship opportunity with a global leader in deriving energy from waste.

Seventeen-year old Samantha Dobson, from Epworth, will join Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI) following the completion of her first year of technical training at HETA.

Samantha’s passion for this industry was sparked while studying engineering and resistant materials at her school – South Axholme Academy. Enjoying the hands-on aspect of the subject, as well as the ability to explore her creative side, she applied and successfully secured a place at HETA.

“Everyone at HETA is really supportive, the instructors are with you every step of the way,” says Samantha. “Their guidance on writing my CV, mock interviews, in addition to supplying other employability skills, was essential to me landing my placement with HZI.”

Samantha is looking forward to getting started with HZI in the summer, which will see her move to Edinburgh for her second year of training and may offer her further opportunities for travel.

She hopes that her success will also inspire more women into engineering roles.

“A career in engineering has got so much to offer and it’s a really exciting thing to be a part of,” adds Samantha.

The fact that I will also start earning while I am completing my apprenticeship will allow me to go all the way through to degree level. Applying to HETA has genuinely opened up a world of opportunity for me.”

With a widening skills gap, a career in engineering offers excellent employability opportunities, as HETA Scunthorpe’s Centre Manager Joanne Rowland explains: “Last year we saw the first Scunthorpe cohort complete their three-year apprenticeships. We are now seeing them progress to the next level of education, as well as take on leadership roles.

HETA opens global opportunity for Scunthorpe teenager

Former HETA apprentice and RB Engineer Tom Dooley – is helping young people in Yorkshire and the Humber to follow in his footsteps.

Hull-born Tom decided to pursue an apprenticeship with HETA after leaving sixth form college: “I had an interest in engineering and HETA was, to me, the standout provider in the area. They put me in touch with some of the largest engineering employers in our region, including RB, BP and Total.” Following a year of practical training with HETA, Tom joined RB as a mechanical engineering apprentice in its Liquids manufacturing department. The Hull-based plant produces global consumer health brands such as Nurofen, Gaviscon, Lemsip and Bonjela.

In his fourth year, Tom was supported by HETA through the completion of his engineering HNC, which allowed him to progress on to RB’s graduate scheme. Capitalising on this step into management, Tom is now a Maintenance Team Leader for the Liquids processing area, where the bulk products are

manufactured. He attributes much of his opportunity for progression and development to HETA’s vigorous recruitment process.

“It is a challenge for companies to tell what a new employee will be like simply from a CV,” explains Tom. “It is difficult to know what they might be capable of, how they are going to interact and integrate with different people. “I think this is something HETA does really well.

They look at all your functional skills, team building capabilities, and observe how you work alongside other people. Knowing first-hand how rigorous this process is, it gives me a lot of confidence in the capabilities of candidates when I now recruit apprentices.

“I think engineering is a great industry to get into,” concludes Tom. “Completing an apprenticeship through HETA opens so many doors. Plus, while you are training, you are in real-world environments, building relevant skills and getting paid for it! It really is an amazing thing to do.”

Former HETA apprentice and RB Engineer helps trainee technicians secure vital employability skills

HETA has afforded an exciting opportunity for two apprentices – Connar Kemp and Kieran Welsh. The 17-year olds are working on the multimillion pound site after being recruited by a leading Hull-based engineering consultancy firm.

Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers are the mechanical and electrical design consultants for HETA’s state-of-the-art £4.2 million facility on Dansom Lane in Hull. The new centre will feature impressive facilities, including a 15,000ft2 industry-standard workshop space,

electronics and IT labs, as well as recreation spaces.

Working on aspects such as the data and power drawings, Connar admits: “I’m slightly jealous that I won’t get to learn there! When I got told I would be working on the new HETA site, I knew it would be a great opportunity and the site looks incredible, with plenty of space and amazing equipment.”

“Their ability to learn quickly has been incredibly impressive and proved a real asset

to the business,” explains James. “When they joined us, they were starting from scratch but they can now run with many projects by themselves, which frees our more experienced engineers up to focus on other tasks and develop our business further.”

After completing their HETA apprenticeships in a year’s time, Connar and Kieran’s future career prospects look bright, with Sutcliffe putting in place a development pathway that will see the duo obtain their degrees in the next five years.

Opportunities come full circle for HETA apprentices

Industrial CadetSilver Award ProgrammeIndustrial cadets is an industry led accreditation for workplace experiences that are designed to influence the skills and aspirations of students. The programme is supported by major national employers and we are delighted to be in the process of achieving the accreditation for our work experience programme. Our level of accreditation is a silver engagement award and is a recognised education award. Students who take part in our work experience programme will graduate as an Industrial cadet becoming a part of the national accreditation network.

MatrixStandardThe Matrix Standard is a quality standard for organisations to assess and measure their advice and support services, which ultimately supports individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals. At HETA, we aim to follow the guidelines and assessments to support the learners of our students and potential applicants.

Case StudiesJon NortonFormally Wolferton School

I started at HETA as an apprentice in 2000 where I was employed by Turbo Systems. I did a variety of engineering including welding, electrical pipefitting and pneumatics but my main trade was fitting and machining. Doing the different aspects of engineering allowed me gain a full appreciation and understanding of these.

I remember turning up for my first day feeling nervous but excited. I remember meeting my instructors and just how at ease they made everyone feel and how different it was in comparison to being at school and having teachers. There was instantly respect for these men and the skills they had and were willing to pass on.

After I completed my apprenticeship I went on to complete my HNC. I stayed with Turbo Systems Ltd until 2007 and met and worked alongside some great people who taught me so much and have a lot of respect for. I then went on to work for a small business in Beverley called Daco Solutions Ltd.

Come 2009 I had decided to venture on a journey and pursue a career in the Royal Navy. Finally joining the Royal Navy in October 2010 I decided to embark on a career in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

I joined HETA as an apprentice in 2015 and was employed by Bradbury. During the first 8 months at HETA I got to work on various skills such as maintenance, hydraulics, CAD design, pneumatics and more. It is useful for being able to decide which aspect of engineering you are most suited to in order to decide an appropriate career path for yourself. HETA is a mix of being in a workshop 4 days a week and classroom based 1 day per week. It provides both feelings of being in education and being in a working environment so it does not give you a false impression of what the working environment will be like.

In the company I work just as any other employee would. I am given jobs of a high responsibility and I take them with pride. I design and alter products that are used within the company and sent out to customers. I look to improve company procedures and products in order to maximise potential output. Working within a design role produces a ripple effect – the more efficient a product you design leads to a more efficient end piece.

Isabel MeadFormally Tollbar Academy

“At HETA it is almost impossible not to make friends and with engineering being extremely team based you are constantly interacting with new people.”

I started at HETA as a traineeship. I wasn’t sponsored by a company but I knew joining the programme if I worked hard, HETA would help in securing me a company. The recruitment process was good and contained interviews and aptitude tests. HETA worked with me and I took part in regular employability skills classes which prepared me for interviews and we also took part in CV writing. The careers team at HETA regularly sent out all the trainees’ C.V to all their companies. In February, I had an interview with Wren Kitchens for a mechanical role. I was successful in securing an apprenticeship with Wrens and the employability skills sessions helped me secure employment. As a trainee, HETA helped with travel expenses so I wasn’t out of pocket as I drove to and from HETA each day. I was able to claim back £15 a week from HETA. Engineering is challenging but the final results of a completed project makes it worthwhile. I plan to extend my engineering qualifications whilst in employment by starting the HNC programme with HETA.

Natalie OliverMature Learner

In 2016, Natalie made the bold decision to change profession at the age of 31 and pursue a career in engineering.

“I think many people traditionally see engineering careers as fixing cars, building engines or working in factories,” explains Natalie. “These are perceived as jobs in which you’re constantly getting dirty and don’t get paid much.

However, I don’t think everyone realises that everything is engineered in some way to become what it is, whether it’s a mobile phone, an internet application, or even the water that comes out of your taps. The exciting thing about engineering is discovering something new every day.
