Australia Awards recipients have shown that they have the drive to succeed in their studies, but transitioning to academic life in a new country can be a challenge for anyone. That’s why Deakin offers international students a complete range of services and programs, from accommodation assistance to academic development and social activities.

Our staff are will support you through every step in your Deakin experience.

GET STARTED We make it our priority to ensure that all new international students make a smooth transition. Deakin’s welcome program includes orientation, workshops, social events, study groups and opportunities to get you involved in campus life.

DEDICATED SUPPORT STAFF Deakin University Student Australia Awards Contact Officers will assist Australia Awards students with a range of aspects such as airport pick up and temporary accommodation, establishment of an Australian bank account, extending the scholarship, changes to enrolment and academic and personal issues.

STUDENT MENTORS Student mentors help newly-arrived students adjust to being on campus and can provide you with academic help, social assistance and emotional support. Many student mentors are international students, and know what it means to be new to Deakin and Australia.

STUDY At Deakin we want to help you get the most out of your learning experience. We have staff and programs dedicated to providing study support services to help you succeed.

Library The Library is vibrant and technology-rich, providing access to inviting learning spaces where you can study or meet friends on every campus, and it has a supportive online presence in the cloud.

DeakinSync DeakinSync is your personal online hub with everything you need to succeed. Access your study units, manage your email and calendar, and collaborate with others anywhere, anytime to stay connected and in control of your studies.

IT support Deakin students are provided with IT support 24/7 via an online knowledge base of hundreds of IT self-help articles and videos. IT help is also available over the phone and on campus.

Study support Get study advice in time management, note-taking, developing your academic English, avoiding plagiarism, critical thinking, writing essays and reports, class presentations and exam preparation.

WORK Deakin’s Jobshop can help you find a part-time job, volunteer position, course-related experience, or graduate position with resource centres located on all Deakin campuses. All Jobshop services are free, even up to one year after you graduate.

Industry experience Many Deakin degree programs provide opportunities to gain real-world work experience through work-integrated learning programs. These give you a chance to improve your skills and can play a critical role in developing employability

PLAY As a Deakin student you can explore more than 150 clubs and societies across all campuses including sporting, academic, personal development, health, course and discipline-specific, religious and many more. There is sure to be a club or society for you.

Plus, there is a wide range of sport and recreation activities available on all campuses, ranging from fitness centres and team sports competitions.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING Deakin offers a range of services to help students stay healthy, safe and promote personal wellbeing – physically, mentally and spiritually. Services include medical centres, multi-faith chaplains, counselling, disability support, safer community, physiotherapy, sport and recreation and student advocacy.

THE AUSTRALIA AWARDS The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships and fellowships funded by the Australian Government that aim to contribute to the long-term development needs of Australia’s partner countries, in line with bilateral and regional agreements.

Scholarships are primarily for postgraduate study, however a limited number of undergraduate scholarships are available in specific countries.

Australia Awards applicants must read the applicable country or regional profile for details on the application process, as opening and closing dates for applications, country specific priorities and requirements (including English language) and documentation requirements may vary. LIFE AT DEAKIN – SUPPORT AND SERVICESGET EXTRA PREPARATION FOR YOUR DEAKIN STUDIES Australia Awards recipients may be eligible to take the Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP) program at the Deakin Univeristy English Language Institute. The IAP is a five-week program that you can take before your start your degree. The IAP is designed develop the writing, reading, listening and speaking skills needed to achieve success at university. This is an exclusive, high-level course for students who wish to excel.

I thought, ‘I have to have a degree but not just any degree, one that can get me

anywhere.’ And so I decided to apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship... To be a

successful candidate was the best feeling ever.

Deakin degree programs have eligibility requirements that students must meet in order to gain entry into their course of choice. This includes meeting Deakin’s academic admission requirements and English language requirements.

Academic entry requirements vary depending on the degree you wish to pursue. You can find the entry requirements for bachelor’s, master’s by coursework, and higher degree by research degrees at: deakin.edu.au/aa‐entry

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they meet Deakin’s English language requirements either through previous study or by taking approved English language exams. Pages 3–4 of this brochure provide the IELTS scores needed to meet the English language requirements for select courses.
