It can be argued that no area in Burnaby has a moreinteresting history than the Heights.

The Heights is one of three hills – Capitol Hill and BurnabyMountain are the others, each successively higher as you goeast – that face Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants cameto the area with the opening of Hastings Street in 1902 andthe arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. With

populationgrowth, thefirst merchantssoon appeared. Many Italianscalled theHeightshome, joiningthe Englishand Irishimmigrantswho had comebefore.

Formedas an official

businessimprovementarea in 1994,the HeightsMerchantsAssociation focuseson issues affectingthe area. The associationis involved in activities such as:street beautification efforts, street cleaning, the installationof street banners, the annual Heights business directory, member advocacy, branding the area, decorative street signsand seasonal events, including Hats Off Day. The daylongevent kicks off with a parade down Hastings Street whilebusinesses “tip their hats” to customers with activities, foodand entertainment throughout the remainder of the day.

Many of the stores in the Heights are owned by second andthird generation merchants. This is balanced by a wide rangeof newer stores and services, some run by new immigrantsfrom diverse cultures. This diversity makes the Heights anarea that truly feels like a small town with a big heart. Forinformation, go to www.burnabyheights.com.

The history of Burnaby goes back more than 100 years to1892, and the Edmonds neighbourhood was at the heart ofthat history. The city’s first municipal hall was located at thecorner of Kingsway and Edmonds.

Much has changed since then, but Kingsway is still a majorcommuter route and with more residential and commercialbuildings being built, Edmonds is one of the fastest-growingregions in the city. The big news in recent years was theofficial opening of the Edmonds Community Centre, whichtook place in 2013.The facility, the first community centre to be built in the

city in more than 20 years, is double the size ofthe Bonsor Recreation Complex and includes

90,000 square feet of space, including adouble gymnasium, a six-lane 25-metrelap pool, leisure pool, hot tub andsauna. The double gym provides spacefor badminton, basketball and floorhockey, and there is also a multipurposearea, a child care area, studio space,

a youth centre, martial arts, and spacefor seniors. A fitness centre, along with

200 parking spaces, is also included in thestate-of-the-art centre.

The area has undergone a multitude of newdevelopments in the last decade. It all began with theredevelopment of the old Middlegate Mall into the state-of-the-art HighGate Village. Soon afterwards, the new TommyDouglas Library opened in the heart of Edmonds and itis already being lauded as one of the best libraries in theLower Mainland. Edmonds is also home to the Nikkei Place, which includes the National Nikkei Heritage Centre and theJapanese Canadian National Museum.

Edmonds is also known for its multicultural mix of residents, with many Eastern European and African immigrantshappy to call Edmonds home. The benefit for gourmetsis that means Edmonds has one of the most varied mix ofrestaurants anywhere in the Lower Mainland. TraditionalItalian, Greek and Chinese restaurants are joined by Thai,Japanese, Vietnamese, Nigerian and Indian restaurants.

One thing Burnaby has in abundance isdiversity – and there are plenty of opportunitiesto celebrate Burnaby’s diversity and culturethroughout the year.

In March, the Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Sikhtemple in Burnaby celebrates the birth anniversary oftheir guru, a 15th century saint who called for a castelesssociety, with a Nagar Kirtan Parade. Each years, hundredsof revellers pour into the streets of South Burnaby and march for hours through thecommunity. The event also includes food and a historical exhibit at the temple at 7271Gilley Ave.

In May, the Burnaby-based Tian-Jin Temple hosts an annual festival featuring food, games and entertainment, including a traditional puppet show and a drummingdemonstration. There is also a martial arts performance and craft booths for kids. Theannual Tian-Jin festival is usually a two-day celebration, which happens on a weekendin early May. For more info: www.tianjintemple.org or call 604-568-9880.

Also in May, the City of Burnaby, in collaboration with the Burnaby Rhododendronand Gardens Society, holds its ever-popular Rhododendron Festival. The free day-longfestival takes place each year at Deer Lake Park, near the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The focus of the festival is to promote sustainable ecological health. Highlights includevariety entertainment, rovers, mini-workshops, horticultural and nature tours, a silentauction, artisan, pottery and plant sales, and interactive arts activities.
