THE WINDOW JULY, 2015
ANDERSON HILLS CHRISTIAN CHURCH
(DISCIPLES OF CHRIST)
2015 Vacation Bible School
This year’s Vacation Bible School was a fun and rewarding experience. This
is a joint VBS with the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and St.
Timothy’s Episcopal Church. We had 106 participants this year, and 85
volunteers. If you saw the decorations in the Narthex you might guess that
our theme was “Son Spark Labs” and our activities were built around
science and science experiments. Each morning we saw a skit where
Professor Petrie, played by our own Ian Baker, and his assistant, Sally,
demonstrated a scientific principle and then gave a Christian perspective
to it. One day the experiment demonstrated cause and effect, and we learned that when we sin the effect is that we are
separated from God. One day we saw a demonstration of chain reaction. The learning we took away was that when we share
God’s love with others, it creates a chain reaction of caring that goes on and on.
We enjoyed all the usual activities, Snack, Recreation, a mission project, and Story Telling. We also had
Science time in the Fellowship Hall with “ cool critters” (really big snake and really big turtle) one
day, rocks, minerals and crystals one day, Yoga one day, and even the Science of Dance one day.
One of the most interesting activities this year was the Craft area which we called the Innovation
Station. Participants constructed their own inventions and creations out of recycled materials.
There were some amazing games, robots, and inventions coming out of that area.
We couldn’t have had such an awesome VBS without help from our many wonderful volunteers
from all three churches that join together for this endeavor. We really appreciate all of you that
helped us: Thank you to everyone who mows the yard and to Cindy Thomas who has worked so hard to make
our play areas and landscaping so beautiful. And big thanks to everyone who brought in water and food for our
volunteers and supplies for our Snack time.
A special thank-you goes to Scott Shellabarger, Sean Riffle, and John Heeney for getting our
window unit air conditioners in operating order. Our VBS classes use all the Sunday School
rooms in the old part of the building for Snack time and discussion, so we really needed those
areas to be comfortable during the hot weather.
Thank you to all who participated,
volunteered, helped set up and
helped clean up- we appreciate the
enthusiastic support of this church,
and we look forward to next year’s
VBS, which is already scheduled for
June 6-June 10. Put it on your
calendars for 2016!

From my heart…
Hard to believe it is the end of June and I am grateful for the opportunity Al and I have to take a break very
soon. When I read the Bible or other inspirational books and when I preach I often think the message is good for two
levels - one for me and one for the church i.e., meaningful for an individual and for a group. Let me share one such
recent message from “The Word For You Today.”
When Jesus Comes on Board: “One day Jesus saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen,
who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats...belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from
shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put
out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and
haven't’ caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such
a large number of fish that their nets began to break.’
Are you sitting today where Peter sat? Your outlook is bleak, your nets are empty, you’ve tried everything you
know to do and you’re ready to give up? It happens; you get to the place where you simply stop expecting anything
good. You’ve experienced too many disappointments and you’re afraid to dream, reach, stretch, or broaden your
horizons. Jesus know how hard you’ve tried, and today He is inviting you to try again - this time with Him.
Even though you’re wrestling with depression and tormenting memories, unemployment, addition, financial
failure, or sickness, the Lord of new beginnings wants to come on board. If you let Him, He will show you what to do.
Now, what He says may not initially make sense to you. But if you’re willing to respond like Peter - ‘Because you say
so, I will’ - you’re on the threshold of a miracle. Today, invite Jesus on board and watch how your situation changes.”
I say, “Welcome aboard, Jesus!”
Blessings, Rev. Nancy
Rev. Nancy will be on vacation July 3rd – 13th.
During this time period if there is a pastoral emergency you should be in touch with Gayle Roush or Jane
McSorley, Co-chairs of the Elders or any of the other Elders. They will be able to provide support and know
who to be in touch with if additional support/help is needed. Administrative needs should be directed to
Katy Lee, Moderator or Scott Shellabarger, Vice-Moderator.
Rev. Nancy will be attending General Assembly, in Columbus Ohio July 18-22. She
will stay in touch with appropriate people via phone and email during that time and will be available to
respond to emergencies. She also will be in church on Sunday, July 19th.

Praise God for hearts that are being stirred! Sunday, May 3rd
Ian Baker and
Jonathan Lee came forward to make their confession of faith in
Jesus Christ. This is a great milestone in their
faith journeys and we rejoiced with Ian and Jonathan and their families May 14th as they
were baptized.
