Discard Dump Failure at Duiker Mining Limited Heritage Colliery H.C. Hoffmann Colliery Manager G.R. Silk Group Civil Engineer SYNOPSIS Discard generated from Heritage Colliery's coal beneficiation plant was dumped, under limited control conditions, onto a ground base that, although stripped of topsoil and some subsoil, had under- gone little or no investigation either geologically or geohydrologically. A dump height of approximately 25.0 m was achieved, far exceeding the permitted height of 5,0 m and the excessive loading caused a slip failure of the underlying clay resulting in extensive ground movement down-slope of the dump itself. This ground movement was directly towards the Richards Bay Coal Line, situated in a cutting approximately 150m down slope of the toe of the dump, and if allowed to continue may have resulted in the temporary closure of the line. (Photo 1) INTRODUCTION In November 1995 Duiker Exploration (now Duiker Mining Limited) finalised negotiations for the take-over of the privately owned mining company Tselentis Coal (Pty) Ltd. Part of the assets of Tselentis Coal was their underground, anthracite mine, Heritage Colliery. This mine is situated approximately 20 km outside Vryheid, Northern KwaZulu Natal, off the Natal Spa/Paulpietersburg road on the Zuinguin Mountain. The colliery is mining the Lower Dundas seam and is producing approximately 23 000 r.o.m. tons per month. The anthracite markets are seasonal. For 6 months of the year they are able to scalp off the +45 mm raw coal for export. For the remainder of the year all their coal needs to be beneficiated. 63
