Information on EHSSA

Inver Hills Community College Emergency Health Services Student Association is an organization run by EHS students to provide community outreach and opportunities in the EMS field. EHSSA provides the community with first responders for community events, as well as EHS education and speaking opportunities at local area high schools.

S.T.A.R.T. Triage (part 1)

The goal of triage is to separate patients into four categories in order to better treat the most patients in the least amount of time.

GREEN(delayed transport): These patients are often called the walking wounded. If you have patients who are able to walk, have them walk to the designated area for further evaluation. This will ensure their safety and allow you to care for the people who need it immediately.

YELLOW(delayed transport ): These are patients who are able to breath and are alert, but cannot walk because of an injury.

RED(immediate transport): This category is for patients who are in need of immediate transport. This patient is not within normal limits of breathing, pulse, and/or altered level of consciousness.

BLACK(dead/non-salvageable): This category is assigned for patients who are obviously dead. This category is for patients who are obviously dead from decapitation and/or not breathing after attempts are made to open the airway and ventilate.

S.T.A.R.T. Triage (part 2)Steps for using S.T.A.R.T. triage

1) Direct all patients who can walk to assigned location to do so (these

patients will be tagged GREEN).

2) Check the breathing rate on the remaining patients.

>30 respirations per minute = RED

<30 respirations per minute = continue to 3

No respirations = BLACK

3) Check the wrist pulse on the remaining patients.

Pulse present = continue to 4

No pulse present = RED

4) Check the responsiveness on the remaining patients

Patient obeys verbal commands = YELLOW

Patient does not respond to verbal commands = RED

Weather WarningsWeather causes many disasters. Some of the common weather alerts are listed below.

THUNDERSTORM WATCH

This alert means that the weather conditions are favorable for a thunderstorm.

THUNDERSTORM WARNING

This alert means that a thunderstorm is in the area and you should seek appropriate shelter.

TORNADO WATCH

This alert means that the weather conditions are favorable for a tornado. This usually accompanies a thunderstorm warning.

TORNADO WARNING

This alert means that a tornado has been sighted and is in the are. You should seek immediate shelter.
