It’s easy to join so if you’re an artist in the North East and would like to meet like-minded people, get invaluable information, advice and opportunities details can be found on our website and on page 45 of this directory. Pauline Alldis

I was born in the North East of England in 1972. After school, I went to art college, then University. My work varies in subject, from portraits and figurative to wildlife paintings. At the moment I’m enjoying portraits and figurative oils, trying to balance highly detailed, with looser atmospheric techniques.

Judith Appleby

My Northumberland landscape paintings are about patterns and structures of land and buildings. Some are bold expressive paintings, others carefully layered compositions of form. I am constantly inspired to paint the wild areas of North Northumberland, its castles, coast and settlements. My paintings are unique originals at affordable prices.

Renira Barnes

“… inspired by wild and quiet places’’ my work is a response to taking time to really see; there is the scene, the moment, the subtleties of our landscape, - from big Northumberland skies to tiny flowers – merging memories and experiences. Towards expressionism, mixed media, watercolour, acrylic. Originals, prints, cards.

My work consists of several visual forms with references from landscape, & its sky, textures and colour. The majority involve strong bright, bold colours and texture plays a major part in my work. Often incorporating pieces from the landscape such as grasses coaldust & driftwood in the paint surface.

Veronica Bell

With a background in Sculpture (Sunderland University 1990-95) I use natural materials, turning them into 3D simple and aesthetic forms. Working in wood, I frequently give them the ancient and universal function of ‘spoon‘ or ‘bowl’. Purely sculptural objects have a place in my work too.

I am a figurative artist, painting the contrasting urban and rural landscapes of the North East of England. I have a particular interest in the recent industrial history of the area and it’s legacy. I work in both oils and watercolour and look for beauty in everyday scenes and objects.

My true loves are throwing and stoneware, shiny glazes, clay that rings and endures. Functional tableware or thrown and altered forms, the thread endures. I love to explore other areas, earthenware, sculpture, curled up trilobites, but always return home in the end; spheres and circles, swelling jugs, plates and bowls.

My work on paper and canvas is allegorical in nature with implied narratives alluding to literature and myth. Natural forms displaying an inconsistent symmetry evoke mystery and pareidolia. Bare trees and prickles, bleak portents of mortality, whose ominous presence is countered by lyrical, sugary, colours, suggestive of enchantment and childhood.
