Welcome to Spring! Daylight Saving time be-gins March 12, 2017, at 2 AM. The year is progressing rap-idly and our energetic team has planned many events for your edification and enjoy-ment. Our two main themes--"Wheels" and "Ancestry"--continue to have some new events. The "Wheels" pro-gram has two more planned gatherings. The first is Deer Park Winery and Vintage Car Museum in Escondido on March 31. The second is a train ride from San Diego/Old Town/ Solana Beach to San Juan Capistrano on May 18. We will catch the same train at one of the three starting points and enjoy the ride to San Juan Capistrano followed by lunch at l'Hirondelle. Some may wish to explore the Mission after lunch and others to return to their start-ing points. The "Ancestry" theme has one remaining event at the San Diego Central Library's Genealogy Center on March 16. This library area has vol-unteers to help with any searches through their many volumes and free access to Ancestry.com. Our other monthly pro-grams continue through June. Some groups choose to meet during the summer, as well. Please check on our regular list of events online at: http://hrweb.ucsd.edu

President’s Message

One Retirement Association event that I particularly enjoy is the cooking demonstrations that are presented by our own mem-bers. On March 10, we will have Jewish Grandma's Brisket; on April 28, the demo will be Italian Food Forever; and our last event will be Holy Moly! on May 12. Not only do participants have a chance to enjoy the preparation and wonderful smells, but they partake of the yummy food that has been prepared and go home with the recipes. The RA space is converted into a lovely dining area with tables for five, table-cloths, charger plates, cloth nap-kins etc. There is a nominal $5 fee toward the food. Please join us at one of these events. Or, if you would prefer to try restaurants around town, we have two no-host series. One is ethnic luncheons and the other is a craft brewery crawl. The ethnic luncheons are planned for: Korean Cuisine on March 24, Russian Cuisine on April 21, Cantonese Cuisine on May 5, Peruvian Cuisine on May 19

Ethiopian on June 16. The remaining craft brew-ery crawls are: Saint Archer, March 17, Gordon Biersch, April 14 Green Flash on May 26. In addition, the UCSD medical retirees have their periodic "Lunch Bunch" lunch-eons. Now that I have wheted your appetite, please join us at the Volunteer Spring Lunch-eon on March 22 at Tom Ham's Lighthouse. We have so many wonderful volunteers, and one exceptional one, that we would like to honor with your support. The site is lovely, the music great and the food tasty. This restaurant is a reg-istered, working Coast Guard lighthouse designated Beacon #9. It is one of two active light-houses we have currently in our harbor. All of the events that I have mentioned, and many more, are to be found at: http://hrweb.ucsd.edu. This is also the site where one registers for each program. I hope that you enjoy the ones that you select to attend. They are fun, informative and a time to meet other interesting retir-ees. Please show those that you love, how much you care.

The couple is forced to confront the racism of the town and as tensions come to head, they will have to make some decisions that could cost them everything. Khosla and 3,000 fellow students, alumni, staff, faculty and retirees for a 3.1 mile adventure through campus—past King Triton, the world famous Geisel Library, the Sun God, a 23-foot-high stone bear, and a house mysteriously perched on the Ja-cobs School of Engineering! “Poniente” Spanish Film Presented by Professor Robert Cancel

Saturday, March 11 ∞ 2 PM - 5 PM at the UCSD Retirement Resource Center Please register at http://www-hr.ucsd.edu/go/ra or (858) 534-4724, if no online access

Join other Retirement and Emeriti Association members for our next fascinating international film, which will be a Spanish film by Chus Gutiér-rez presented by Robert Cancel, Professor of African and Comparative Literature. After living in Madrid for many years as a teacher, Lucia returns to her hometown after her father's death results in the inheritance of his tomato farm. While fighting the community's racism toward the new illegal workers, Lucia falls in love with the farm's accountant, Curro, a man who shares her cause. The couple is forced to confront the racism of the town and as tensions come to head, they will have to make some decisions that could cost them everything. You won’t want to miss this critically ac-claimed film. This event is only open to RA and EA members. Please bring a snack to share with others. FREE for RA and EA members.

Support the UCSD Retirement Association Triton 5K Team The Triton 5K Walk/Run will take place Sunday, April 9

Since it was established in 1996, the Triton 5K (formerly the Chancellor's Chal-lenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars) has raised more than $3.5 million, benefiting more than 1,000 motivated ambitious students. The event was founded by former UCSD Chancellor Robert Dynes to rally the cam-pus in support of undergraduate students. Most recently, Chancellor Pradeep K. Kho-sla helped to push past the $3 million fundraising mark, growing the event to include

3,000 participants and volunteers. The Triton 5K is an important campus tradition with a legacy that will last long into the future. Plan to join Chancellor Pradeep K. It's so easy to register online. To join the UCSD Retirement Association’s team for the Triton 5K please go to: http://5k.ucsd.edu/s/1170/startdark.aspx. Click on REGISTER NOW in the center of the page. Once you enter your personal registration information on this page, click NEXT at the bottom of the page. This will take you to the next page. There it will ask if you’d like to join a TEAM? Click on the drop-down box, and scroll down to select the UCSD Retirement Association. Complete your reg-istration and pay. NOTE: You DON'T have to run or walk, if you'd rather not. You can still support the team, and student scholarships, by registering to participate for only $30.

We have lived long lives and surely have interesting, funny and personal stories to share! RSVP on line.

The rules for The Moth are:

1) the story has to be true 2) the story has to have happened to you (not someone else) 3) the story should not be longer than 10 minutes, and 4) the storyteller needs to tell the story without notes.
