Mr. and Mrs. Terry proudly accept signed gifts from the graduating Seniors at the annual picnic held in Winedale, Texas.
The Terry Foundation was established in 1986 by Nancy
M. and Howard L. Terry out o f a desire to help young people
to help themselves. The Foundation’s goal is to improve and
develop the State of Texas by assisting graduates o f Texas high
schools to attend The University o f Texas at Austin and Texas
A&M University each year. The Foundation hopes these stu
dents will have a significant impact on the future leadership of
our state and nation. To achieve this goal, The Terry Founda
tion awards substantial scholarships to students who meet the
exacting standards set by the founders.
Mr. and Mrs. Terry are both long time residents o f Hous
ton, Texas. Howard Terry has been active in businesses o f
banking, investment, construction, real estate, and oil and gas
in the Houston area for many years. He now feels that his
finest achievement was the establishment o f The Terry Foun
dation. Nancy Terry completely concurs.
2
The primary purpose of The Terry Foundation is to iden
tify young people who have the promise o f future distinction
as a leader and to assist them in developing their future and
the future o f those around them.
Terry Foundation awards are based on the criteria o f lead
ership, character, scholastic ability, need, and participation in
activities. The competition for acceptance in the program is
keen. A potential Terry Scholar must demonstrate leadership
potential, a desire to enrich the general welfare o f the commu
nity, and academic ability. A well rounded personality,
grounded in the desire to succeed, and a demonstrated history
o f community leadership, are the key qualities sought by The
Foundation. Mere academics or need alone is not enough.
To apply for a Terry Award, candidates must graduate from
a secondary school in the State of Texas, public or private, and
be accepted to attend either The University o f Texas at Austin
or Texas A & M University. Currently, nominations are made
by the scholarships or financial assistance office at the stu
dent’s university o f choice. The Trustees request letters o f rec
ommendation from each applicant’s high school English
teacher and principal. Other letters o f recommendation that
shed light on an applicant’s leadership and desire to succeed
are encouraged.
The applications o f nominees are screened first by the
respective university’s financial assistance office and second by
the Board o f Trustees. Candidates who progress successfully
through this preliminary process are invited to Houston, at
The Foundation’s expense, for a personal interview with the
Trustees. After the interviews, the Terry Scholars are selected
for the coming year.
In the first year, 1987-88, The Foundation awarded 16
scholarships. They were joined in 1988-89 by 17 additional
recipients. There are currently 150 Terry Scholars at the
Becky Thorne and Lorelei Luna enjoy each others company at the annual A & M Dinner.

University o f Texas at Austin and Texas A& M University.
Forty-three scholarships were awarded for the class o f Septem
ber, 1996. The Foundation anticipates that the number o f
scholarships awarded will gradually increase year by year.
Each Terry Scholar is awarded an annual stipend depend
ing upon prior awards and financial need. The Foundation
intends to always be the principal financial support for each
Scholar. The awards are renewable semester to semester,
depending upon satisfactory progress, and are designed to
cover four years o f study for an undergraduate degree.
The founders hope that The Terry Foundation will con
tinue to grow and prosper with an increased number of
awards each year and that the Scholars will become a family
who will want to participate in the future o f The Foundation
and to help those who follow them.

Texas A & M University’s Academic Building.
Texas A & M University, the Lone Star State’s first public
institution o f higher learning, is one o f the select few universi
ties in the nation to boast triple land-grant, sea-grant, and
space-grant status.
The 121-year-old university is located in College Station, a
medium-sized community that is approximately equidistant
among the state’s most metropolitan areas. Its 5,200-acre cam
pus is one o f the largest in the nation.
Texas A & M has long been known nationally for its school
spirit and traditions, including the fact that its students stand
throughout football games as the Twelfth Man to indicate
symbolically their willingness to suit up and play if needed.
More recently, it has expanded its reputation to include
national recognition for attracting top students, innovative
research programs, and exceptional academic programs in a
host of areas.
The university’s student body includes some o f this coun
try’s best students. Texas A&M , for example, has consistently
ranked among the nation’s top 5 schools in enrollment o f new
National Merit Scholars. In all, it has more than 2,500 stu
dents receiving major four-year academic scholarships and
over 20,000 receiving some form of scholarship aid.
With 43,095 students, the university ranks third nationally
in overall enrollment. Among those students are 7,551 gradu
ate and professional-school students as well as students from
all 50 states and more than 110 foreign countries. Women
now comprise approximately 44 percent o f the student body
at the school that was once all male and all military. Although
military training has not been mandatory for more than a
quarter o f a century, some 2,400 young men and women still
choose to participate in the university’s Corps o f Cadets. The
4 A&M
Corps continues to commission more military officers than
any institution except the service academies.
Texas A & M also ranks seventh nationally in endowment
value, reflecting its ability to support world-class faculty and
facilities and other aspects o f the academic process. The
faculty includes two Nobel Laureates and a winner o f the
National Medal o f Science, six members o f the National
Academy o f Sciences, fifteen members o f the National Acad
emy of Engineering, and three members o f the prestigious and
selective Royal Society o f Great Britain.
The university’s campus has numerous state-of-the-art lab
oratories and research facilities, including a vastly expanded
research cyclotron, now one o f only three o f its caliber in the
world. The university also has a leading chemical characteriza
tion center and various installations that enable it to be in the
forefront in biotechnology and numerous other disciplines in
both the life and physical sciences and in engineering.
The work o f an outstanding faculty in exceptional facilities
has placed Texas A& M in the top 10 in rankings o f major
research universities by the National Science Foundation.
The most recent N SF ranking placed Texas A & M sixth,
and the university’s volume has since grown to approximately
$370 million annually. The research projects supported by
that funding encompass all o f the university’s academic
colleges — agriculture and life sciences, architecture, business
administration, education, engineering, geosciences, liberal arts,
medicine, science, and veterinary medicine.
Not to be limited by state or national boundaries, Texas
A & M is firmly committed to being a vital part o f the “global
village.” Its international outreach efforts include memoranda
of understanding with more than 70 foreign institutions and
organizations in Europe, Asia, and South and Central Amer
ica. In addition, Texas A& M operates the Santa Chiara Study
Center in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy, and many College
Station-based multidisciplinary groups are devoted to
enhancing research and scholarship opportunities both at
home and abroad.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s
The university mascot, “Bevo” the longhorn, graces the courtyard o f John Hargis H all on the U T campus.
Now in its 114th year, the University o f Texas at Austin is
recognized among major universities for its eminence in
research, teaching, and public service. It is the oldest and
largest component o f the 13-campus University of Texas sys
tem. Since its opening in 1883, the University has grown
from a 40-acre tract to a main campus o f 357 acres and 119
buildings.
By attracting capable individuals from every segment o f
society, the University seeks to maintain a student body that is
diverse in nature but united in its pursuit o f higher education.
U T Austin students come from 50 states and 116 foreign
countries. The fall 1996 enrollment was 48,008 students.
Minority and international students constitute 34.2 percent of
the student population. The backgrounds o f the students are
richly varied ethnically and geographically.
The faculty of U T Austin is composed o f 2,334 professors
and lecturers supported by more than 2,400 assistant instruc
tors and teaching assistants. They include the winner o f the
1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the winner o f the 1979
Nobel Prize in Physics, the winner o f the 1948 Pulitzer Prize
in Fiction, the winner o f the 1967 Pulitzer Prize in Fiistory,
recipients o f the 1968 and 1986 Enrico Fermi Award, and a
1971 National Medal o f Science recipient. The University has
1,022 endowed positions— 176 chairs, 471 professorships,
and 375 fellowships and lectureships. From the efforts o f indi
vidual faculty members to work o f 84 organized research
units, scholarly inquiry covers a broad range o f disciplines —
literally spanning the known universe from the inner workings
o f atomic nuclei to the far reaches o f space.
18 DT
In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, fac
ulty members maintain regular office hours and many serve as
academic advisers to students. Although U T Austin is a large
university, students will find most classes small enough to
allow for considerable faculty and student interaction.
The University has the fifth largest academic library system
in the U.S. In Anthony Hobsons Great Libraries, it is cited as
one o f the 32 great libraries o f the world. More than seven
million volumes are located in 19 different libraries on cam
pus. The system is comprised o f four separately administered
units: the General Libraries, the Center for American History,
the Humanities Research Center, and the Tarlton Law
Library, the fifth largest academic law library in the nation.
U T Dinner (I to r): Dr. Jim Vick, Jennifer Summerford, Robert Gabriel, Peyton M cKnight and Gardner Dudley
enjoy the festivities at the annual fa l l banquet.
The General Libraries consist o f the Perry-Castaneda Library
(the main library), the Undergraduate Library, the Collections
Deposit Library, four special collections, and nine branches.
Special collections include the Nettie Lee Benson Latin Amer
ican Collection, the Asian Collection, the Edie and Lew
Wasserman Public Affairs Library, and the Middle East Col
lection.
The University campus also extends way beyond the
boundaries o f the main campus, incorporating research cen
ters across the state that keep the University at the forefront
of study in such areas as geophysics, astronomy, marine sci
ence, history, literature, and engineering.
