Welcome to the PIANO BATTLE !!!

The black and the white come ready to fight.

Two piano champions on stage; one in black, the other in white. They perform, compete, and shine.

The brainchild of internationally has accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, the PIANO BATTLE the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The two artists, with distinctly different performance styles, take turns to perform pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. They will even improvise based on the tunes you request.

Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance by two piano geniuses, the PIANO BATTLE is a unique concert that pleases both the eye and the ear.

A special thank you to Stein Way Piano Gallery-Charlotte, NC for helping to arrange the use of the white piano featured on stage tonight.

BlackEducated in Hanover, Berlin and London, pianist Paul Cibis has performed on five continents and established an international presence. He has played solo and duo recitals at festivals in his native Germany, France, the UK, the US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand and appeared in the electronic media around the world, including the BBC, WDR, 3Sat, ORB, HR, RTHK and CCTV.

Following his interest in presenting classical music in unique and innovative ways, Paul has co-developed the PIANO BATTLE concert show which has been performed at various festivals in Europe and Asia. Its success has led to further invitations in China, Taiwan, USA, Italy, Germany and the UK, including festivals

such as the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Kings Place Festival London.

Paul has also been involved in various film projects. He penned the music scores for several short films, and was the initiator and music supervisor of the international award-winning documentary PIANOMANIA.

His CD recordings include an album of French mélodies and piano works by Berlioz, Fauré and Debussy, with German mezzo-soprano Barbara Senator. His latest album features a collection of solo pieces by Taiwanese composer Kai-nan Huang.

Paul Cibis studied piano with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling in Hanover and Peter Feuchtwanger in London. As a collaborative pianist, he graduated from Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, studying with Graham Johnson and Eugene Asti. From 2005 to 2009, Paul taught at Trinity College of Music in London and also conducted Lieder workshops at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He regularly gives workshops and master classes for pianists in Germany, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

WhiteBorn in South Africa, Andreas Kern studied piano in Cologne and Berlin with Günter Ludwig and Pascal Devoyon. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has extensive experience in Europe, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan, India, South Africa, and the United States.

Keen to present classical music in unconventional ways, Andreas has developed several concert formats for stage and television that often feature unorthodox venues and collaborations with artists across genres. These performances have drawn a much wider and younger audience than more traditional classical productions.

One of his most engaging concept shows is the PIANO BATTLE, which he co-created

with pianist Paul Cibis. The show sees the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical and contemporary pieces.

For the French-German TV channel Arte, Andreas Kern created the critically acclaimed late-night format “arte lounge”. As the show’s artistic director and co-host, he has performed with musicians including Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capucon, Sol Gabetta, Sarah Chang, Vadim Repin, Nils Mönkemeyer, Elina Garanca, and Jörg Widmann. The “arte lounge” was nominated for the prestigious Grimme Award in 2011.

Andreas Kern is also the ‘architect’ of the Piano City® Festivals, which feature more than 100 piano performances within one weekend. Since 2010, these cultural celebrations have brought together piano music enthusiasts in Berlin, Naples, and Milan.

From 2009 to 2013, Andreas Kern served as the artistic director of the Darling Music Experience in Darling, South Africa. The festival offers classical and contemporary performances, connecting Darling ensembles and soloists with well known national and international musicians.

Inspired by the works of classical and contemporary composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Schumann and Yann Tiersen, Andreas Kern recorded an album of original piano creations in 2014.
