THE KING’S SCHOOL

King’s is an academically selective, co-educational independent school originally founded in 1541 for the ‘poor and friendless’ children of Chester. Almost 500 years later, King’s is a thriving, dynamic and forward-thinking school of 1100 pupils that is considered to be one of the very best of its kind in the country. At King’s we aim to make the very most of every individual student in the school, both academically as a selective school with a great tradition of scholarship, but also in terms of character development, confidence and wellbeing. This is achieved by a broad curriculum, extensive co-curricular programme, excellent pastoral care and highly committed and professional staff. We want our pupils to remember their time at school with real fondness whilst relishing the prospect of successfully making their mark on the world and leaving it a better place. The school enjoys a spacious and well-resourced site on the southern outskirts of Chester, having moved from a city centre location in 1960. Our new, state-of-the-art infant school, Willow Lodge, was built 4 years ago with the Junior School being impressively extended a year beforehand. A major site development plan is in progress for the Senior School, with a new £5 million Sports Centre due to open this year. The school retains close links with Chester Cathedral, where it holds regular services, including a traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas.

King's comprises the Senior School (ages 11-18), the Junior School (ages 7-11) and the Infant School (Willow Lodge, ages 3-7). There are currently 730 pupils in the Senior School (200 in the Sixth Form), 250 pupils in the Junior School and 120 in the Infants, supported by almost 250 staff (teaching and support). In 2018 the students achieved 72% A*- A at GCSE and 87% A*- B at A level. There are over 100 activities and clubs in the Senior School for students to choose from on a weekly basis. The major sports are football, hockey, cricket and rowing for boys and netball, hockey and rowing for girls. Drama, music and the CCF are also all particularly strong. Further information about the school can be found on our website: www.kingschester.co.uk

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking an outstanding Director of Music to lead this vibrant department from September 2019. The successful candidate will be a talented and imaginative teacher, leader and performer and will direct and inspire a large and dedicated team of instrumental teachers and champion the further development of extracurricular music throughout the school: orchestras, choirs, ensembles, musicals, concerts and Cathedral services. The Director of Music is responsible for the overall vision for music in the school, formulating policy and organising all musical activity. He or she will manage a team of highly motivated music staff and instrumental teachers and be a skilled administrator and communicator. The person appointed is likely to be a strong pianist, able to direct rehearsals from the keyboard and to accompany instrumental rehearsals for concerts, musicals and public examinations (up to Grade 8 Trinity/ABRSM). He or she will direct the Schola Cantorum and other senior ensembles, selecting appropriate music for these and encouraging attendance and maintaining high standards of performance across all musical groups within the school. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to all other duties normally shared by members of the department, such as marking, writing reports, setting work in case of absence, attending departmental meetings and appropriate administrative tasks. All members of the teaching staff are expected to take on duties as a Form Tutor.

THE CREATIVE ARTS FACULTY

All departments at King’s are part of a faculty structure, with Heads of Departments responsible directly

to the four Heads of Faculty, who in turn report to the Deputy Head Academic. The Creative Arts and

Physical Education Faculty, comprising Art & Design, Drama, Design Technology, Music and Physical

Education, is led by Steve Downey.

THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

There are currently four members of staff including the Director of Music and the Assistant Director of Music (who is also Head of Academic Music). The Deputy Head Academic teaches Music, and there is one additional part-time Music teacher. There are fifteen visiting instrumental teachers, some of whom play a significant role in coaching our chamber ensembles. The King’s School operates a two-week timetable. Pupils in Yr7 and Yr8 receive one period (55 minutes) of class music per week, while pupils in Yr9 receive three periods per fortnight. Pupils in Yr8 and Yr 9 are taught in half sets which means that there is a maximum of 13 pupils per set. The scheme of work at Key Stage 3 has been devised by our own music staff. The number of students taking music as an examination subject at GCSE and A level is consistently good. There are currently fourteen pupils studying GCSE music in Yr10 and sixteen in Yr11. We currently follow the new OCR specification. At A level, where we also follow the OCR course, there are currently two music students in both the U6 and L6. Development in the quality and range of extracurricular music has been outstanding in recent years. All musical tastes and ability ranges are catered for and regular concerts show the full diversity of the work of the department. In addition to this there are frequent opportunities for pupils of all abilities to perform as soloists in the very popular series of informal lunchtime recitals. More able pupils are stretched by appropriate chamber ensembles and the opportunity to perform as soloists at chamber music concerts. Workshops and Masterclasses have been a regular part of the calendar during recent years, with pupils being given the opportunity to work with musicians from the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic. We work collaboratively with the Drama Department, producing a large-scale musical every two years: recent productions have included Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde, Oh what a lovely War!, The Producers and Little Shop of Horrors. Cabaret will be performed in the Vanbrugh Theatre from 5-8 March. The Tim Turvey Music School, opened in 2005, offers outstanding facilities for all aspects of music. There are eight instrumental teaching rooms, one classroom and a Recital Hall which doubles as another classroom and the main rehearsal space. The department is equipped with PCs running Sibelius. The Recital Hall houses a Yamaha C7 Grand Piano, and Yamaha upright pianos are offered in most of the practice rooms. The department also has a large stock of orchestral instruments and a growing library of orchestral and choral music.

King’s enjoys an excellent reputation for music in the local area. Choral music is flourishing, with four choirs at the school covering repertoire from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary gospel. The Schola Cantorum sings Choral Evensong termly at Chester Cathedral as well as leading the worship at

the school’s end of term Cathedral Services. In December 2017 the choir performed in Paris making memorable recordings at Notre-Dame Cathedral, St Sulpice and La Madeleine. Over the years several members of the choir have also been members of the National Youth Choir, National Youth Training Choir, Hallé Youth Choir and the Rodolfus Choir. Instrumental music also enjoys a growing reputation as well as a healthy diversity. The appointment of a Head of Strings and Head of Brass has brought about a significant improvement in the standard of orchestral and band playing and the school provides a number of musicians for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, National Brass Band of Wales, Hallé Youth Orchestra and Cheshire Youth Orchestra. An impressive number of our senior musicians have recently achieved Diplomas with both Trinity and ABRSM. The School awards a Music Scholarship at Yr 7 and offers a half-term of free ‘taster’ lessons to Junior School pupils who wish to play the violin, cello, bassoon, horn, trombone, euphonium or tuba.
