Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF)

There are 22.5 million veterans in the United States, and more than 2.5 million Americans have served ourcountry in uniform since 2001. History suggests that our nation’s veterans will face formidable social andeconomic challenges throughout their post-service life course. The resources and capabilities of highereducation are well positioned to inform and impact many of these challenges. Unfortunately, theseresources and capabilities have never been coordinated and leveraged on a national scale, to serve ournation’s veterans.

In June 2011, Syracuse University made an institutional commitment to launch the nationally focusedInstitute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), a historical first in the context of higher education. Tosupport this effort, JPMorgan Chase (JPMC) broadened its existing collaboration with the University toprovide industry leadership. The mission of the IVMF is to fully leverage the intellectual, human and socialcapital of higher education, in service to America’s veterans and their families. To this end, the IVMFdevelops and nurtures a community of interdisciplinary scholarship—including the arts, humanities, socialsciences, business, medicine, education and law—positioned to investigate and confer insight into the social, psychological and economic issues impacting this community. The institute develops education andemployment-focused programs in collaboration with industry, government, NGOs and the veterancommunity, to address the primary economic and public policy concerns of our nation’s servicemen andwomen, and their families.

Employment - The IVMF acts as a bridge between veterans, military families andindustry/government/NGO programs positioned to create employment and vocational trainingopportunities. The institute provides resources and support services to veterans and their families toidentify and pursue employment opportunities, leveraging skills and experiences gained in militaryservice and new skills and knowledge gained post-service. The IVMF assists with strategies to recruit, assimilate, retain and advance veterans and military families in employment. Read more aboutemployment here.

IVMF Education and Training Programs - The IVMF leverages higher education to design, developand deliver world-class educational programs for veterans, their families and communitystakeholders. The institute’s educational programs are designed to provide veterans and theirfamilies with the skills needed to be successful in education, work and life. Read more abouteducation and training programs here.

Research & Policy - The IVMF research mission is to conduct, discover, organize, archive, interpret, and disseminate research of significant importance to veterans and families, as well as to leverageresearch to empower the public, private, and independent sectors to act as informed decision-makers related to the social, policy, and economic concerns of America’s veterans and theirfamilies. National Veterans Resource Complex (NVRC)

Currently in the construction planning stages, the National Veterans Resource Complex (NVRC) at SyracuseUniversity will serve as the enduring home of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families as well as housestate-of-the-art vocational and educational programs designed to advance the economic success of theregion’s and the nation’s veterans and military families. It is conceived as a class-leading, national exemplarof academic, government, and community collaboration. The NVRC will leverage a public-private sectorpartnership model to nurture academic research, actionable programming, and collaborative thoughtleadership positioned to impact veterans and their families on the campus of Syracuse University, in NewYork State, and in communities across the U.S. Accordingly, theNVRC will create the conditions necessary to build upon andsolidify this region’s ongoing effort to position CNY as thenation’s hub of research and programming connected to theveteran and military sectors. NVRC will result in hundreds ofmillions of dollars in economic activity and the creation ofhundreds of high-paying jobs, and seed the conditions forfuture growth and new opportunity.

The NVRC will also serve as the center of veteran life on thecampus of Syracuse University, in the local community, andacross Central New York (CNY). The facility itself is purposefullydesigned as a community convening hub, and will be accessibleto community organizations, as well as local and stategovernment partners, for the purpose of facilitating programs, trainings, events, and initiatives. The NVRC will include aregional student veterans’ resource center, conceived as a one-stop-shop supporting the educational needs of the region’s veterans and families. To that end, the NVRCwill include classroom spaces to accommodate local and national veteran-focused programming, along witha conference center and 1000-seat auditorium suitable to host community activities, lectures, and nationalconvening events and conferences.

Page 9: Director of Development, Institute for Veterans and Military ......2010 - The University’s portfolio of veteran entrepreneurship further expands with the addition of EBV-Families,

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY BACKGROUNDER | 9

In addition, the NVRC will be designed to include gallery space where the university’s storied legacy ofserving America’s veterans can be put on permanent display – and also as a platform to highlight present-day exhibitions of art, culture, and performance relevant to the veterans’ community.

Based on historical precedent and projected opportunity, current estimates suggest that the NVRC willgenerate more than $300 million in regional economic activity over the next five years, directly supportmore than 300 high-wage jobs, and indirectly support job creation that will exceed 7,000 jobs over thatperiod. In addition, the event convening capacity created by the NVRC will support increased occupancyrates at CNY hotels and lodging facilities, projected to be 5,000+ hotel nights annually.

Its 5-year impact will consolidate and leverage resources from over 15+ major corporate partners. NVRC isalso projected to build from and leverage $75 million in matching external research, $32 million in newfunding proposals, and $19 million in new research awards. Finally, it will produce $22 million in outsidefinancial influx from travel and tourism.

IVMF Development Overview

The IVMF has been an incredibly strong fundraising entity, raising close to $30M in FY15 – more than anyother group on Syracuse’s campus. At this point, roughly 65% of IVMF’s fundraising is from corporateentities. Tremendous opportunities exist to leverage individual philanthropy and the incoming Director willhave a transformative impact on that arm of fundraising, engaging military alumni and present and past SUparents, and partnering across campus to promote inter-disciplinary projects.
