Director of Development & Communications

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Director of Development & Communications will be responsible for the design, leadership, and delivery of philanthropy and community engagement programs on behalf of LOFT Community Services. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development & Communications will establish a strategic resource development plan encompassing aspirational and annual performance goals for fundraising, volunteer engagement, and donor stewardship. In keeping with the three pillars of LOFT’s Strategic Plan 2020: 1) Lead the Way; 2) Care Passionately; and 3) Be Our Best, the Director will galvanize donors, partners, and stakeholders to fund innovations that save and transform lives. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for all external communications on behalf of LOFT, including but not limited to newsletters, reports, publications, and a digital communications strategy which support the resource development plan and enhance LOFT’s profile and brand. The breadth and depth of LOFT’s services will serve as a springboard for communicating stories of impact.

ABOUT LOFT COMMUNITY SERVICES

Since 1953, LOFT Community services has provided hope to individuals and families with complex challenges including serious mental health issues, dementia, substance abuse issues, physical health challenges, and who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. LOFT stands for “Leap of Faith Together“. The name refers to our philosophy of taking risks and reaching out in response to unmet and emerging needs. It also refers to the leap of faith our clients take when they join our programs and take the risk of believing that things can improve for them, and that recovery is possible. With a $34 million operating budget and serving over 5,100 individuals annually, LOFT steps up to serve those most in need by offering them the safety and stability of housing, and the practical support they need to regain their dignity and take control of their lives by promoting recovery and independence. LOFT’s programs proudly welcome youth, adults, and seniors of all

gender identities and sexual orientations. We currently serve 4,600+ individuals per year, and because of our proactive approach, that number continues to grow. We are one of the largest mental health service providers in Ontario and unique in the diversity of our services. We are also the largest supportive housing provider in York Region/South Simcoe, and we operate York Region’s only homeless street outreach van.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Director, Development & Communications will be an accomplished fundraising executive who leads with integrity to increase the base of financial support for LOFT. The ideal candidate will possess broad knowledge of the development function, paired with rich experience in marketing communications. The Director will use a steady hand to define and steer the next philanthropic chapter of LOFT’s evolution, keeping pace with significant organizational growth over the next five to eight years. Passionate and caring, ethical and authentic, the ideal candidate will unlock significant investment to enable capital and program innovation to benefit the clients of LOFT. Working with the CEO, Board, and a dedicated team of Program Directors, the Director will cultivate new connections with individuals, corporations, and foundations, building on a successful track record of securing major gifts in the five- to seven-figure range. The successful candidate will also have experience developing and implementing integrated, data-driven annual giving campaigns that seamlessly combine solicitation, stewardship, and communications to drive philanthropic support and involvement. Brimming with energy and enthusiasm, the new incumbent will be a savvy entrepreneur with a strong understanding of the political landscape. Friendly, approachable, and a natural story teller, the Director will grow the marketing communications function and champion the story of LOFT, one of the GTA’s best kept secrets. The successful candidate will craft compelling messages that demonstrate the organization’s impact and amplify its reputation and brand recognition. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development & Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan to elevate fundraising across the organization, setting clear goals and metrics for revenue development, communications, and volunteer and donor engagement. Strategy and Planning

Participate with the senior team in the strategic and business planning process.

Develop funding priorities in association with colleagues across the organization, and translate into short- and long-term fundraising strategies consistent with the Strategic Plan.

Develop and manage annual budget and operating plans and targets for individuals, foundations, and corporations.

Fundraising

Lead, develop, and execute fundraising campaigns and build and maintain relationships with donors to support the work of LOFT.

Research, identify, and pursue opportunities for funding through all appropriate channels in alignment with LOFT’s mission, vision, and values.

Oversee all facets of the fundraising program including major and planned giving, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, direct response, and fundraising events.

Develop compelling case materials.

Assess, evaluate, and implement changes as needed to fundraising activities and practices.

Ensure the best possible stewardship of all donor relationships.

Ensure progress tracking, financial controls, and reporting systems are in place. Communications

Maintain and manage LOFT branding standards and messaging platform.

Oversee and contribute to the production of published materials including Annual Report, internal and external newsletters, fundraising and program brochures.

Oversee and enhance digital communication channels, including the LOFT website, e-communications, and social media platforms.

Staff and Volunteer leadership

Manage and provide leadership and oversight to the fundraising team including recruitment, training, direction, support, coaching, mentorship, and directing personal and professional development.

Grow the leadership volunteer structure, including a major gifts cabinet, and participate in the identification, recruitment, training, management, and stewardship of leadership volunteers.

In partnership with the CEO and Board of Directors, champion fundraising and a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

Other

Maintain and strengthen relationships with internal stake holders: senior leadership team and program directors.

Ensure the maintenance/development of policies, practices, and standards to ensure LOFT’s continued accreditation and manage all re-accreditation processes.

Ensure all fundraising policies and practices continue to meet Canada Revenue Agency requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Significant experience building integrated fundraising programs and writing annual business plans.

Demonstrated experience building budgets and monitoring financial progress.

Solid track record in soliciting and closing major and planned gifts in the five- to seven-figure range.

Experience identifying and setting funding priorities and matching opportunities with donor interests.

Experience developing and implementing custom and mass donor stewardship strategies.

Experience developing a strategic communications strategy and creating a variety of communications materials (internally or through outsourcing).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; polished presentation skills.

Demonstrated experience working effectively with Board members, committees, and volunteers.

Excellent understanding of fundraising technologies including Raiser’s Edge, Luminate, and digital media.

Experience developing and implementing capital campaigns.

Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with prospective and current donors, board members, senior leadership, staff, and development team members.

Experience leading and coaching a professional fundraising team, challenging and motivating performance standards.

Possesses strong interpersonal skills with an inclusive communication style, gaining respect and credibility from a variety of stakeholders and colleagues.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to lead multiple projects.

Consistently demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, integrity, and sensitivity.

CFRE designation an asset.

BIOGRAPHY

Heather McDonald Chief Executive Officer LOFT Community Services Heather McDonald brings enthusiasm and passion to the role of CEO of LOFT Community Services. Ms. McDonald has her BA Honours from Queens University in Sociology and Psychology, and a Masters of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. In addition, she has certifications in Health Leadership and Financial Literacy from the Rotman School of Business and is an adjunct Lecturer at University of Toronto. Ms. McDonald has worked as a mediator at the Family Law Centre of London, Ontario and has been a leader in the fields of mental health and addictions, leading comprehensive health clinic sites for people who face barriers to getting health services in the community in London and Toronto. Ms. McDonald was a long time co-chair of the Board of Sistering, a Toronto organization serving women who are homeless. She is a regular presenter at local, provincial, and national conferences and is an engaging, charismatic speaker. Ms. McDonald has been on numerous provincial advisory groups including tables addressing issues of youth mental health and addictions. She is on the executive advisory council of the Toronto Central LHIN and is a member of Toronto’s Alliance to End Homelessness. Ms. McDonald loves working at LOFT, and is inspired by the clients and staff every day. She enjoys a workplace that is fun, creative, and with deep purpose.
