Our 5th Presenting Season…Time has flown since the OAC opened its doors in December of 2008. In the past four years we have hosted over 250 events from school district shows and concerts, to our professional series, to a variety of community events. Every event imaginable, it seems, has been hosted here…and there’s more to come.

With the 2013-14 Season many familiar and popular events will return again along with a variety of new offerings. For example, John McGivern returns by popular demand with one of his most popular shows ever, Home for the Holidays on December 8. The Chamber Theater Series is new, all in the intimate setting of the Little Theater; regional, professional theater at its’ finest. Our district plays and concerts continue to amaze thanks to the talent and hard work of our staff and students; something for everyone.

A New Name for the Main Stage…On Friday, June 14, 2013 the Oconomowoc School Board officially unveiled a new dedication for the OAC Main Stage. From now on it will be known as the Dr. Patricia E. Neudecker Stage. The Board wanted to acknowledge Dr. Neudecker (the driving force behind the creation of the Oconomowoc Arts Center) for her dedication, vision and leadership. I am honored to have been part of her tenure at the district and the Board’s decision to honor her in this way is testament to the impact she has had on all of us.

Five By Design in Club Swing opens the Oconomowoc Arts Center’s 2013-14 Season on Sunday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. with the songs and music that made the swing era hop. Complete with sets, costumes and a big band, this five member vocal group promises to razzle dazzle the audience.

Backed by a 12-piece studio big band, Five By Design embraces the unforgettable melodies, lush harmonies, and swinging rhythms that evoke the names of Miller, Mancini and Mercer. The musical theater show follows the rise and fall of the big band era from 1937-1955 at the fictional night club, Hotel Crosby, “where the music’s hot, the drinks are cool, and the legend lives forever.”

Whether performing their seductive arrangement of Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine,” the madcap parody of Spike Jones’ “Cocktails for Two,” or the lush romance of Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa,” Five By Design enchants the audience by deftly blending music and theatrics effortlessly.

From the frenetic-paced opening of Benny Goodman’s “Bugle Call Rag” to the show’s blockbuster finale of Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing,” Club Swing celebrates the songs, events and personalities that defined American popular culture during the swing era.

The Minnesota-based Five By Design includes Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Catherine Scott, Kurt Niska, Michael Swedberg, and Terrence Niska. Four of the five have been singing together since 1986.

This group of cool cats first starting melding their signature harmonies as college students on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus and have been swinging ever since. For over 20 years, the nationally-acclaimed vocal ensemble has been performing with symphony orchestras, like the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops and in arts venues throughout the U.S.

“This is a wonderful show for people who lived during the swing era and it’s also great for younger people who didn’t get to experience this time period in our history first-hand,” said Five By Design’s, Alton Accola. “Our mission statement is ‘Making classy cool again…one song a time.’ This show is our way to keep this music alive.”

So check your coat and grab a seat for a night of unparalleled delight at the fabulous Club Swing!

By Charles DickensThe last of the Christmas Numbers compiled by Charles Dickens, Dr. Marigold’s Prescription is a tale of a “cheap jack” who hawks wares from a traveling cart with his adopted daughter, Sophie, who is deaf and mute. The story takes us from tragedy to triumph as the father and daughter’s relationship eventually matures and flourishes. Home Free Vocal BandA cappella kicked up a notch…or two!By Rebecca Seymour

The audience will discover there is virtually no limit to the human voice as the all-male, a cappella vocal band, Home Free takes its dynamo harmonics to the next level on the Oconomowoc Arts Center Neudecker Stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12.

A cappella. Technically, it’s what they do. But Home Free is not a bow-tie barbershop quartet. They’re a vocal band - which means they do a lot more than sing without instruments. With a genre of music that covers an eclectic mix of pop, jazz, classical, gospel and country, all songs are performed with only the human voice and microphones, resulting in a truly unique and incredible sound sensation.

Home Free is an entertaining combination of comedy and music featuring five male vocalists from Minnesota with extensive theatrical and musical training. Each performance engages the audience in a rich blend of harmonies that recreate an entire band experience, that reaches out to every generation.

Winners of the 2010 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes, the group includes Matthew Atwood (tenor), Rob Lundquist (tenor), Chris Rupp (baritone), Tim Foust (bass) and Adam Rupp (beatboxer/vocal percussionist).

Home Free has performed for audiences world-wide, ranging from the Minnesota Vikings to Fortune 500 companies, Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Lines, a recent 75-city concert tour and more. The group has also brought their love of a cappella music into public schools, raising music awareness and thousands of dollars for high school music programs.

“The group started singing together 13 years ago while in college and has blossomed into a full-time touring

career. While the group membership has changed over the years, the love of a cappella singing certainly hasn’t,” said Home Free’s founder and musical director, Chris Rupp. “The OAC audience will be jaw-droppingly amazed. Our favorite tagline is ‘your eyes won’t believe what your ears are hearing!’ Using just our five voices, the audience is going to hear a complete ‘band’ sound, filled with drums, bass, guitar, horns, etc. And mixed in with all of that, they’ll also be laughing like crazy, as we combine quite a lot of humor into our show.”

“Bully” The award winning documentary by Lee Hirsch

Also included in this special 54 minute, edited version, is footage from Anderson Cooper’s CNN documentary “The Bully Effect.”

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Bullying is an age-old problem and challenges us to be heroes and friends”.

Excerpts from the character-driven documentary “Bully” follow five youth and their families over the course of a school year. Offering insights into different facets of America’s bullying crisis, including the tragic results of suicide and incarceration due to retaliation against bullies. Glimpses into the home and school settings of these kids creates a powerful and inspiring film that is a must see for every teenager, parent, educator, and adult who interact with children. This film is just one resource offered by the Bully Project that also includes an entire curriculum on bullying prevention.

This special version of “Bully” is being presented through a collaborative effort between the Oconomowoc Parent Education Network (OPEN) and the Kettle Moraine Parent Resource Network. We would also like to acknowledge Greendale Against Bullying (GAB) for their assistance in bringing this event to the OAC. It is our common goal to change the learning, home, community, and social media environments of our youth to ones that are more caring, safe, and respectful by creating more understanding and acceptance of others. For more information you can visit: www.thebullyproject.com.

Thank you to the Oconomowoc Public Education Foundation, the Oconomowoc Area Foundation, and the Kettle Moraine School District PTO’s for their financial support.

A Q & A panel discussion will be held immediately following the film.

Together We Will Change The Culture Of Learning

OCTOBER 9| 7:00 PM | Neudecker StageAuthor EventBill McKibben - Oil and Honey: The Education of an Unlikely ActivistPresented by Books & Company & The OAC

Bestselling author and environmental activist Bill McKibben recounts the personal and global story of the fight to build and preserve a sustainable

planet…

Bill McKibben is not a person you’d expect to find handcuffed and behind bars, but that’s where he found himself in the summer of 2011 after lead-ing the largest civil disobedience in thirty years, protesting the Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House.

With the Arctic melting, the Midwest in drought, and Irene scouring the At-lantic, McKibben recognized that action was needed if solutions were to be found. Some of those would come at the local level, where McKibben joins

forces with a Vermont beekeeper raising his hives as part of the growing trend toward local food. Other solutions would come from a much larger fight against the fossil-fuel industry as a whole.

Oil and Honey is McKibben’s account of these two necessary and mutually reinforcing sides of the global climate fight—from the center of the maelstrom

and from the growing hive of small-scale local answers. With empathy and passion he makes the case for a renewed commitment on both levels, telling the story of raising one year’s honey crop and building a social movement that’s still cresting. For more information, contact Books & Company – 262-567-0106.

At the end of the presentation there will be an author talk, Q & A session, and book signing.

Tickets available at Books & Company and at www.booksco.com

Proudly Presents the

2013-14 SEASONNOVEMBER 16, 21, 22, 23 | 7:30 PM & NOVEMBER 17 | 4:00 PM | Neudecker StageHAIRSPRAYMusic by Mark Shaiman | Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Mark Shaiman | Book by Mark O’ Donnell and Thomas Meehan

Hairspray is the musical with everything - the ultimate feel-good show which has played to sold out houses in London, on Broadway and theatres around the globe. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do! You won’t want to miss the musical that Ben Brantley of The New York Times calls “as sweet as a show can be without promoting tooth decay.” “HAIRSPRAY—Big Hair, Big Heart, Big Hit!”

MAY 28, 29, 31 & JUNE 1 | Outdoor Courtyard TheatreROMEO AND JULIET by William ShakespeareIn the midst of an historical bitter feud, passionate young love emerges. This classic play is a swashbuckling drama and the greatest love story ever told. Two young people meet by chance at a party, and before the night is over fall hopelessly in love. However, their dreams of happiness are threatened by the bloody conflict that exists between their two families, which constantly threatens to tear them violently apart. Swift, dangerous, and passionate, this timeless tale of doomed romance explores the power love has to not only unite, but to destroy. “These violent delights have violent ends.”

FEBRUARY 19 - 22 | Neudecker Stage6th ANNUAL SENIOR DIRECTED PLAYMore to come in January, 2014You will definitely want to be present when Drew Weiland and Maddie Mehnert, of our theatre department take over the directorial reigns from Mr. Klubertanz, as these students select, cast, design, publicize, and ultimately direct their own Neudecker Stage production! The senior-directed play is not-to-be-missed! Tickets will only be available through OHS, not the OAC Box office.
