Creatine fitness pills get mixed’ reviews

The decision to hold the leader’s summit portion of the conference at UBC has created campus controversy for the very reasons addressed by the SFUSS motion.

Over the summer, UBC’s Alma Mater Society (AMs) faded to reach a two h r d s majority vote on the issue. Ruta Flwgold, AMs vice president, reaffirmed the student soci- ety‘s inability to take a position on APEC either way.

“The consensus of our council is to encourage and pro- mote debate instead of just promotug one side of the issue,” she said. ”There’s so many aspects to cover with APEC that we felt we could do it better from a neutral stance.”

Also in opposition to APEC is the Langara Student Union (LSU), which also voted to actively protest against the con- ference.

“Obviously the people who are against it are more vocal than the people who are for it, but I think there is a lot of support for [APEC] being held at our university,” said Flwgold. “There’s also quite a lot of people who just don’t care,” she added. *:*

Creatine is a legal, performance enhancing and reportedly safe fitness supplement that’s almost flying off the shelves at UBC. But a recent UBC study has researchers questioning whether the substance actually works.

Creatine monohydrate is a relatively new supplement that’s supposed to boost energy, stamina, strength and body mass, and decrease recovery time after a workout. By allowing essential acids to absorb more eas- ily in the muscles, the substance is supposed to help provide short bursts of energy.

v - According to Nick Christofides, a Birdcoop employee and Thunderbird rugby player, “...it’s the biggest selling thing [at the Birdcoop].’

The shop sells an average of two to three creatine products a day, Christofides said. Most popular is Experimental Applied Science brand, which costs about $70 for a month’s supply. According to Christofides, these products are most popular among sprinters, rugby players and football play- ers.

But the substance, an acid that occurs naturally in the body, might not be as strong as athletes think it is.

Ted Rhodes, a professor of Human Kinetics at UBC, supervised a study on crea- tine last year. “In most cases I don’t think that this creatine monohydrate works. I think it’s very inconclusive,“ said Rhodes.

“I think sometimes people, when you give them a supplement and you tell them it’s going to work, a lot of people think it works. They start lifting heavy weights any- way and try to improve their strength and they would improve their strength whether they were on it or not,’ Rhodes added.

The study of 2 1 male UBC students was conducted by exercise physiology grad stu- dent Mike Edwards

He gave ten of the subjects a placebo and the other 11 creatine. The subjects were tested for anaerobicm short burst-strength with repeated bouts of exercise on a tread- mill, followed by 20 grams per day of either the placebo or creatine.

According to the study, the test results didn‘t show any significant improvement between an initial test, taken before the s u b

jects started taking crea- tine, and tests a week later.

I n principle, Edwards said the theory behind creatine is a good one: it builds up the body‘s ener- gy store by loading crea- tine into the muscles, enhancing physical per- formance and delaying fatigue.

According to previous studies, the only major CREATINE: get it while supplies last.
