Background

The Lewis and Clark Expedition was a two and a half year journey intended to explore, map, and evaluate the land west of St. Louis all the way to the Pacific Ocean. At the time, the area of North America that was west of the Mississippi River had not been explored very much. The U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson, was curious to know what this area had to offer, and his interest became even stronger when the United States made the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase was when the U.S. bought a large chunk of land in North America, known as the Louisiana Territory, from France. Jefferson wanted to explore this land and see what types of plants, animals, and resources existed.

The Louisiana Purchase

In May 1804 , Lewis, Clark, and their expedition party, often called the Corps of Discovery, set off from St. Louis, Missouri on their trip to the Pacific Ocean. The majority of this area had never been explored by Americans, so the adventurers were uncertain of what they would find. As it turned out, they faced extreme difficulties along their journey to the Pacific Ocean such as injury, hunger, harsh weather, sickness, and difficult terrain (mountains and rivers).

During their adventure, the group received help from Native Americans. Natives gave them guidance and supplies to help keep them alive. Along the way, two Native Americans, Sacagawea and Touissant Charbonneau, joined the Lewis and Clark expedition and acted as guides and interpreters for them.

In November 1805, one and half years after they began their expedition, Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean. In present day Oregon, they built a fort and stayed there during the winter. In the spring of 1806 they began their journey back to St. Louis. They ran into some trouble when the Blackfeet Native American tribe attempted to steal from the corps, but they were not harmed. Fortunately, they discovered a faster route back to St. Louis, and on September 23rd, 1806, Lewis and Clark returned and were treated as national heroes.
