Contact Information As the Chamber makes preparations for the 2010 fiscal year, the Public Policy Committee holds a series of meetings to draft local, state, and federal agendas for the upcoming year. This committee, open to all interested Chamber members, addresses issues from annexation to infra-structure.

We feel it is important for our members and the community to understand where we stand on several issues and over the next few months, we’ll address those in Directions magazine and we’ll begin at the local level.

One key factor in economic development of any community is annexation. The Chamber feels that the City of Decatur should explore the viability of annexation of property whose owners enjoy a benefit from city services and have a close proxim-ity to the boundaries of Decatur. As such, annexation could be a catalyst for com-mercial and residential growth in Decatur. The Chamber also suggests that the City of Decatur consider instituting policies regarding water and sewer extensions, as other municipalities have enacted, which operate to preserve the health and contin-ued viability of city services to its citizens. As such, an extension of sewer service to areas outside the Decatur city limits should be done so pursuant to a policy that recognizes the value in recouping the city’s investment of infrastructure and services. The Chamber believes this can be accomplished by offering improvements or services to those property owners who are desirous of being a part of Decatur.

The future success of Decatur’s downtown area depends greatly on the success of the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority and the Envision Decatur plan. The Chamber supports the establishment of a downtown arts campus, a project currently being developed through a part-nership involving Calhoun Community College and Athens State University. This project will allow students of the arts to complete their first two years of instruction and general education courses with Calhoun and complete their upper division work from Athens State. This project will have a tremendous impact on the local community, creating an educational centerpiece downtown and opening the door to cultural events and activities that will draw beyond the bor-der of Morgan County.

Business Development is one of the single most important roles of the Chamber. We strive to make Decatur-Morgan County a business-friendly environment and support the sale of properties such as the Morgan County Fairgrounds (owned by the county) and the Morgan County Board of Education. Both properties are best suited for retail development because of their proximity to other developments. Redevelopment of the properties would generate sales tax revenue for the commu-nity. In an effort to promote economic growth, the Chamber urges the Decatur City Council and the Morgan County Commission to work with the Chamber’s Business Development Committee to develop small business, retail and light industrial incentive packages for new and existing businesses.

Commodore of the QuarterEach quarter, an outstanding Commodore earns the Commodore of the Quarter award as a dedicated member who serves above and beyond our expectations. Edge Student Leadership

The Edge Student Leadership Program held Community Service Day in December. The Edge participants helped the following non-profits: Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, The Committee on Church Cooperation, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, United Way, Neighborhood Christian Center, and Lexi House Thrift Store. The Edge participants learned about servant leadership by serving those in need.

In January, the Edge class toured United Launch Alliance and Joe Wheeler EMC for Economic Development Day. Doug Shores gave the class a tour of ULA where they saw rockets being made firsthand. While at Joe Wheeler, the Edge participants learned about our local power needs. Thank you to Jeremy Nails from Morgan County Economic Development Authority for giving the Edge class an Economic Development overview.

Excellence in Leadership

The Excellence in Leadership class had Education Day in December. They toured Chestnut Grove Elementary School, Kids Works, West Morgan High School, and Calhoun Community College. Thank you to Lauretta Teague at Chestnut Grove, Bill Hopkins at West Morgan, and Misti Palmer at Calhoun for hosting our class. The Excellence Class continues reading Ken Blanchard’s Book Leading at a Higher Level. Each month’s book review is lead by class members. Thank you to Michael Tubbs for facilitating the book review.

In January, Excellence in Leadership toured Old State Bank, the Carnegie, and Historic Decatur for Decatur Now and Then. The One Vision, One Voice, One Morgan County chairs also spoke to the class in January to give them an update. The Excellence Class continues to work on their Night Golf Tournament to benefit Decatur Youth Services. It will be held on April 13 at Point Mallard.

IT Summit

The 2009 Information Technology Summit, held at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, gave Chamber members the opportunity to learn about topics ranging from conferencing to customer care from speakers from Microsoft and Cisco. Plans are underway for a similar event in 2010.

TRC Kick-off Luncheon

Several volunteers gathered at Sykes Place on Bank St. during the kick-off luncheon for Operation TRC V, the Chamber’s fifth Total Resource Campaign. Due to a change in team struc-ture for this campaign, this was the first time many volunteers met their teammates. They set personal, team and campaign goals for the year and were motivated by campaign chairman Chad Potter of Nucor Steel. Operation TRC V is an eight-week campaign and will go through March 26. Career & Workforce Expo

The 10th Annual Career & Workforce Expo was held in early February at Calhoun Community College and was attended by approximately 1,300 students from Morgan, Lawrence, Limestone and Madison Counties. This event featured local businesses and industries who met with students to teach them more about career options in North Alabama. This event is free to exhibi-tors and students and helps students prepare for the education they’ll need on the career path of their choice.

The Chamber recently received a gift of bound letters of thanks from Ms. Kisbey-Green’s 5th grade class at St. Ann Catholic School in Decatur. The students wrote letters of thanks to community leaders in celebration of Catholic School’s Week in early February.
