A Musical Comedy

Very rarely a Broadway hit musical like City of Angels comes along: It ran for over 900 performances, won the Tony award--Broadway’s highest honor--for best musical, won best music, best story, best set design, and two best actor awards, and won another eight Drama Desk awards. It was written by some of the finest talent, including Larry Gelbart, famous for creating hit TV shows (MASH) and movies (Tootsie), with the music is by Cy Coleman--a musical legend--and lyricist David Zippel. Yet it is performed infrequently by local theater groups. Why?

City of Angels is two shows in one, making it an unusually complex show to pro-duce. One story is about a screenwriter writing his first movie script based on his successful 1940’s Hollywood detective novel. The second show is the enactment of that screenplay. Between these two shows, there are over 40 characters, over 40 scenes, and two musical scores. How do you present two plays in one? The an-swer lies in both clever theater tricks to move the story quickly from scene to scene and “color coding” the show, with the movie scene’s performed in black and white and the real life scenes in color. The scale of the show poses challenges for a local theater company, but the story is so funny and the jazz-themed music so engaging that SVCT decided to take on the challenge and bring City of Angels to our stage. Beyond the challenge of this particular show are many elements that must come together. Behind the scenes the actors and their director rehearse for many weeks, refining the characters’ emotions, relationships, blocking, and movement. A cho-reographer designs and teaches the dance numbers, and a vocal director teaches both the songs and how to express the jazz qualities of the music. The set pieces must be built in such a way that they can be used to represent 40 scenes with a minimum of traffic and also all fit on our playhouse stage. Then an orchestra must be assembled and rehearsed on some tricky but wonderful music and posi-tioned on stage to fit the spirit of the show. Sound must be designed, from voice-overs to microphones to sound effects. And the lighting must be designed and installed in the playhouse; in this case there are two lighting designs and imple-mentations, one to show real life and the second to show the audience the movie within the show. Add to that hundreds of props, costumes, painting, box office, concessions, photography, programs, ushers and much more, all with the goal of providing a wonderful theater experience. We hope we’ve accomplished that goal.

Our next production will be the family favorite Oliver!. It is a great show for the whole family with fantastic characters and wonderful music. Opening night is August 1.

Enjoy the show and please consider joining our theatrical family for opportunities to be on stage, assist backstage, or become members. Find membership details in this program. Help us continue our tradition of over 40 years of quality theater.

CaSt biographieS

Rob Christopher (Stine)

Rob was last on SVCT’s stage two years ago as the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz. He previously appeared in SVCT’s Curtains as Detective Frank Cioffi, in Annie Get Your Gun as Frank But-ler, in The Music Man as Harold Hill, and in 1776 as Charles Thomson. In a rare departure from musical comedy, he also recently shuffled onto stage as a 99-year-old French artist inPintello Comedy’s Social Security. Rob is very grateful to SVCT and this show’s super staff for the opportunity to again play a fun and challenging role and to his fellow performers for their terrific work. Finally, Rob thanks his family for their patience and support of his theatrical escapades.

Aaron Weisberg (Stone)

Aaron Weisberg (Stone) - Aaron makes his first appearance with SVCT, having previously performed with many com-panies across the South Bay and Peninsula. Recent roles include Henry Spofford in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (South Bay Musical Theatre), Mr. Hart in 9 to 5 (West Valley Light Opera), Professor Bhaer in Little Women (Sunnyvale Community Players), and Mr. Pinkerton in Pinkalicious the Musical (FOX). He will next appear as David O. Selznick in Moonlight and Magnolias (Dragon Productions Theatre Company).

Suzanne Guzzetta (Gabby / Bobbi)

Suzanne is happy to be making her debut with South Valley Civic Theatre in City of Angels. This produc-tion marks her return to the musical theatre stage after a multi-year absence. Previously, she frequented the oper-etta stage with Lyric Theatre of San Jose, Free RangeOpera, and other local companies. Some of her credits include Ruddigore (Rose Maybud), Trial by Jury (Angelina), Pirates of Penzance (Edith), and Irene (Helen Cheston). Suzanne would like to thank her husband, her family, and friends for all their support.

Cindy Powell (Donna / Oolie)

This is Cindy’s first production with SVCT. She’s also ap-peared in four seasons with the Los Gatos Shakespeare Fes-tival, and several musicals in the Bay Area including South Bay Musical Theatre’s Promises, Promises (Fran), Theatre in the Mountains’ Into the Woods (Baker’s Wife) and Sunnyvale Community Players’ Legally Blonde (Paulette) and Pippin (Catherine). Offstage, she can be found directing with youth theatre companies in Palo Alto, Los Altos, and more!

Jon Reed (Buddy Fidler / Irwin S. Irving)

Jon has acted in a number of shows for SVCT in the past 16 years. He has also served on their Board of Directors, co-produced and directed for them. He has always loved doing musical comedy and feels that City of Angels is one of the best. This is a wonderful cast, and he hopes you enjoy watching this show as much as he has enjoyed performing in it.

Elizabeth Calisi (Carla Haywaod / Alaura Kingsley)

Elizabeth is eager to perform as Mrs. Alaura Kingsley, and says the role has been so much fun to play that she feels very lucky to have this opportunity. On the SVCT stage Elizabeth appeared as Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, Rona Lisa Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. She majored in musical theatre in college at Kent State University in her native Ohio and continued to perform in NYC before moving west in 2006. Elizabeth is delighted to be working with this cast and wishes for you to enjoy the show with “measured breaths, darling, measured breaths.”

Joseph “Bud” Biafore (Werner Kriegler / Luther Kingsley)

Bud previously performed in Inherit the Wind (Mayor), Damn Yankees (Commissioner of Baseball), Wizard of Oz (Winkie General), and Fiddler on the Roof (Yussel, the Hatmaker), as well as co-producing James and the Giant Peach. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of SVCT. Bud is excited to be able to perform in a production full of talented actors, singers, and dancers. He thanks the producer, directors, and staff for allowing this privilege. Bud dedi-cates his performance in this show to his grandchildren Lia and Emilio.

Ken Powell (Gerald Pierce / Peter Kingsley)

Ken Powell is excited to be in his third SVCT show, having previously performed as Lazar Wolfe in Fiddler on the Roof and Drunk Santa/Halloran in Miracle on 34th Street. He has also helped run and design sound for many shows including SVCT’s Big the Musical, Legally Blonde, and Fiddler on the Roof. Outside of theater you would probably find him playing video games or singing or playing drums in his church worship band. By day he is a software engineer at Apple. Enjoy the show!

Megan Griffin (Avril Raines / Mallory Kingsley)

Megan Griffin is going to be a senior at University of the Pacific. She is a Communications major and is on the Board of Directors for SVCT. Hope you enjoy!

Bruce Pember (Pancho Vargas / Lieutenant Munoz)

Bruce is known the world over for having much to say, yet little needing to be heard. He can often be found in the company of his beautiful wife and two lovely daughters making a complete fool of himself. As a child, he was an avid video game player. As a grown man, he’s won several video game tournaments. A lot of personal growth there. He also does a mean Enrique Iglesias “Hero” karaoke.

Kel Whisner (Jimmy Powers)

City of Angels is Kel’s eleventh performance and eighth musical with SVCT. Recent shows include Wizard of Oz, Damn Yankees, The King and I, Curtains, It’s a Wonderful Life, Annie Get Your Gun, and The Music Man. When not in the theater, he is head of purchasing for all North America locations with Infineon Technologies. Serving on the Board of Directors for SVCT allows him to give back to the community and friends that have welcomed him over the last seven years. Kel and his wife Vici have been residents of Morgan Hill since 1999.

Ronnie Misra (Shoeshine / Gene / Officer Pasco / Camera Man)

Ronnie is excited to take part in his first SVCT show, though he has performed with a number of other Bay Area compa-nies. Most recently he was seen on stage as the apostle Jude in West Valley Light Opera’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Ronnie’s favorite role was Gabe Green in WVLO’s Breaking Up Is Hard to Do. He has also performed in shows with South Bay Musical The-atre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and Bus Barn. When he’s not on stage, Ronnie is a software engineer at Apple. Some of his favorite pastimes include cooking, travel, and of course watching “Doctor Who” with his wife Valerie.

Doug Doughty (Gilbert / Studio Clapperboy / Dr. Mandril)

Welcome cosmic voyagers! Angels is Doug’s sixth show with SVCT—most recently being dispatched in Deathtrap. And before that he danced with a corpse in Out of Order—now the roles are reversed. Enjoy the intricate and revolving plot!

Rachelle Abbey (Angel City Four)

Rachelle Abbey is excited to make her SVCT debut with such a great show. She was last onstage in April as Audrey in Sunnyvale Community Players’ production of Little Shop of Horrors. Favorite roles include Usherette in The Producers (WCT), Hope in Urinetown (BCP), and Violet in Side Show (Children’s Musical Theater San Jose)). When not on stage she enjoys forms of social dancing such as lindy hop and ballroom, as well as tennis and choir. She currently works in the Wyss-Coray lab at Stanford investigating rejuvenation in the brain.

Roberta Vinkhuyzen (Angel City Four)

Roberta is thrilled to be a part of City of Angels! She has particularly enjoyed learning the complex “Angel City Four” harmonies with her quartet buddies. Roberta has been in-volved with SVCT for several years both behind the scenes as a producer of teen shows and on stage as Georgia Hendricks in Curtains, Lola in Damn Yankees and Pamela Willey in Out of Order. Roberta also played M’Lynn Eatenton in Limelight Theater’s production of Steel Magnolias. In real life Roberta directs the Oakwood High School Vocal Ensemble. She thanks her loving family for their continued support.

Sven Schutz (Angel City Four)

A newcomer to the SVCT stage, Sven is excited to have City of Angels mark his first production with the company. He most recently played the role of Pippin in Sunnyvale Community Players’ production of Pippin; his other memorable credits include Cliff in Cabaret, also at SCP, Sir Harry in Once Upon a Mattress at Stage 1, and Daddy Brubeck in Sweet Charity atWVLO. He would like to thank the cast and staff of the show, especially the fellow quartet members, for being amazing. He would also like to thank his family and friends for supporting his theatrical endeavors. Enjoy the show!

Michael Carey (Angel City Four /Cinematographer / Commissioner Gaines)

Michael is very happy to make his SVCT debut, especially with his wonderful quartet members. Over the past few years, Bay Area theater-goers have seen him as Amos in Chicago, Buddy in City of Angels and Feldzeig in The Drowsy Chaperone at Hillbarn Theatre, Oscar in Sweet Charity at WVLO, Lt. Branigan in Guys and Dolls with SBMT, Rosser in Palo Alto Players’ Parade, and the Starkeeper in Carousel for Lyric Theatre of San Jose. Other favorite roles include Frankie in Forever Plaid, Leon in Fools, Lawrence Garfinkle in Other

People’s Money, Max in Lend Me a Tenor, and Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He would not be able to perform without support from his friends and family, especially his newly-wedded wife Sierra.

Chris Goller (Studio Cop / Big Six)

Chris Goller is a little nervous. OK...a lot nervous. He hasn’t been onstage in 26 years. Chris was last seen playing Dr. Orin Scrivello, DDS, in Little Shop of Horrors at Live Oak High in 1988. Prior to that, he played Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls, and the Ramblin’ Wreck in My Sister Eileen. Chris was also in the chorus of Oklahoma!, where he was paired with a pretty blonde dance partner, who he wound up marrying, and is still dancing through life with.

Javier Garcia (Studio Cop / Sonny)

In Fiddler on the Roof, you may remember Javier as Nachum the Begger and one of the awe inspiring bottle dancers. He really enjoys the theatre, watching Oakland A’s baseball, and SJ Sharks hockey. “I AM Javier Garcia and I want to welcome you to City of Angels—may your visit be all you expect and more.”

Mary Beth Anderson (Hairdresser / Margie)

Mary Beth considers it a wonderful thing to act, sing, dance, fly, dress up, and turn into someone or something else to en-tertain the community she holds very dear to her heart. You may recognize her from the roles she has played in SVCT’s The Music Man, the 2010 Artsopolis Award winning Into the Woods, Curtains and The Wizard of Oz. She continues to dedi-cate her performances to Smike and all the relatives, Rory Tomasello and his inspiring family, Mr. Robert Edwards, and all the dedicated theatre guests that keep SVCT and live performance theatre alive in South County. Now sit back and watch how many characters she plays tonight!

Patrice Lynn (Buddy’s niece / Yamato)

Patrice has been in many other SVCT productions, most recently playing a Villager/Mama in Fiddler on the Roof. She is excited to play Nurse Yamato and be in the ensemble with such a wonderful cast. Patrice has enjoyed having fun and laughs while working with and getting to know the cast and crew. She hopes you enjoy the choreography, music, and acting (not to mention the costumes, makeup, and amazing revolving set) that make City of Angels so special. All in all, an obvious...winner!

Christine McElroy (Studio Employee / Mahoney / Nurse)

Christine has been active in SVCT productions off an don for 20 years--whether on stage (which she loves) or behinds the scenes as Props Mistress or Producer. City of Angels is a play close to her heart as she is Los Angeles born and raised. Thanks to the cast and crew for all your support. Have a lovely time!

Tracy Van Gundy (Studio Employee / Nurse / Bootsie)

Tracy has been part of SVCT since the last century. How-ever, this is her first time on this side of the curtain in over 10 years. She’s happy to be back and with such a talented cast.

Joyce Bedard (Studio Employee / Margaret)

Joyce has been having a fabulous time singing and dancing with the ‘angels.’ The talent and spirit of the cast and staff has made this such an amazing experience. She previously performed with SVCT in Miracle on 34th Street (Foster mother), and Fiddler on the Roof (gossiping villager). Enjoy the show!

Alan Chipman (Del DaCosta, songwriter to the stars)

Alan Chipman is also City of Angels’ Musical and Vocal Director. See the Staff Biographies for more about Alan.

the traditioN of the gypSy robe

Each SVCT production awards the “Gypsy Robe” to a chorus member who has made special contributions of time and ener-gy towards the good of the show. The robe is presented to the recipient on opening night; the cast member puts on the robe and blesses the stage before the performance. It is then the duty of the recipient to affix to the robe a patch that signifies the show. The Gypsy Robe is then returned closing night to perform its duty for another show and carry on the tradition.

The producer of City of Angels is pleasedto present the Gypsy Robe to:
