NUT Directed Time Calculation

You need to enter your school's information into the white boxed cells on Sheet 2 of this Excel Workbook.

The total directed time for the year will then be automatically calculated in hours.

The sheet will automatically format times in hours and fractions of an hour once you've entered hours and minutes.

Don't enter any data into the cells that are lightly shaded in grey.

This is Blackburn with Darwen NUT's guide to enable you to calculate your school's directed time.

Use the Example on Sheet 3 together with the Notes on Sheet 4 in order to help you fill in the times in Columns C and D of Sheet 2and the number of each activity where required in Column I on Sheet 2.

So, for example, if you enter a time of 5 hours and 35 minutes, this time will then be displayed as 5 7/12 meaning five and seven twelfths hours.

The sheet will automatically format times in hours and fractions of an hour once you've entered hours and minutes.

Use the Example on Sheet 3 together with the Notes on Sheet 4 in order to help you fill in the times in Columns C and D of Sheet 2

So, for example, if you enter a time of 5 hours and 35 minutes, this time will then be displayed as 5 7/12 meaning five and seven twelfths hours.

Notes

1.

The calculation of pay and directed time commitments for a part-time teacher require a different calculation using the School's Timetabled Teaching Week (STTW).Please contact us if you have any part-time members who need support with the calculation of pay and directed time.

2. When directed time was introduced, there was a stipulation that the 1265 hours should be spread reasonably evenly over the 195 days a teacher is required to work. As 1265 divided by 195 gives just under 6.5 hours per day, we have always argued that at least 6 hours should be allocated to each INSET day (after all, it is part of our entitlement to professional development!)However, as many schools now choose to disaggregate INSET days into twilight sessions of 2.5 hours each, we often see 5 hours allocated per INSET day.

3. The NUT will support members who wish to refuse to stay for longer than one hour per week in staff meetings.

4. This time can be allocated to allow for duties such as dealing with pupils' issues, seeing parents, dealing with emails and/or other correspondence etc.
