Not So Magical After AllAfter many trips over the years to Disney World with our nephew, my husband and I were eager
to hear about his first time there without us and on h i s o w n d i m e . H e summed it up quite well w h e n h e s a i d , “ I discovered that Disney World is not so magical when I’m paying for it.”
We use a really strong sunblock when we go to the beach with the kids. It’s SPF 80: You squeeze the tube, and a sweater comes out.
Brian’s stress level was at unsurpassed levels. His wife Maggie was in labor and Brian was sure it was

Breathing heavily, Brian grabbed the phone and called the doctor. “ M Y W I F E , S H E ’ S READY, SHOULD WE COME?” The doctor tried to relax the poor fellow, “just try to relax, now tell m e h o w m u c h t i m e e lapses between the c o n t r a c t i o n s ? ” “ S H I R L E Y ! ” B r i a n screamed on the top of his lungs, “HOW MUCH TIME IN B E T W E E N T H E CONTRACTIONS? From the McAlester Police DepartmentAs many of you may know, the McAlester Police Department has recently been involved in the Drive Sober or get pulled over campaign. You may have seen extra safety checks in your neighborhood or more patrol cars on the streets. This campaign is an effort to stop drunk driving and save lives. During the 2015 Drive Sober or get pulled over campaign, there were 4 DUI arrest in the city of McAlester. This number is down from the 2014 campaign, where there were 16 arrest for DUI. Although the drive sober or get pulled over campaign is over, The McAlester Police Department will continue to have a no tolerance policy for drinking and driving. If you are going to drink, have designated driver or some other means of travel, such as a taxi.We have also seen a rash of car burglaries recently. The burglars are targeting unlocked vehicles and are looking for valuables such as I pads, I phones, Gps units, guns and cash. We recommend that you lock your vehicles and keep your valuables secured or at least out of sight. We believe that the burglars are hitting these vehicles during the night time hours, although may be casing your neighborhood during the daytime. If you notice any suspicious activity or vehicles, get a good description or tag number if possible and call the Police Department. Coffee with a Cop will be September 29, 2015 at Carl’s Jr located at 423 S George Nigh Expressway from 7:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M. Come enjoy coffee and
conversation with your local Police Officers. We look forward to seeing you there. To schedule a Fraud/Scam program or Stranger Danger Program, contact Officer Jeremy Busby at (918)423-9657 or Email him at

you have any information that may help us solve a crime, contact the McAlester Police Departments Criminal Investigations Division at (918)421-4917 or
Email Sgt Chris Morris at [email protected]. You may remain anonymous. To report any other criminal or suspicious activity, contact the
McAlester Police Department at (918)423-1212 or dial 911 if it is an Emergency. For the 22nd consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report named Oklahoma Baptist University as Oklahoma’s highest ranked college on the “Best Regional Colleges of the West” list for 2016. OBU is also ranked in the top ten “Great Schools, Great Prices” regional colleges list and is the only Oklahoma college listed on the “A-Plus Schools for B Students” list for regional colleges. The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, were released Sept. 9. They will also be published in the 2016 edition of the “Best Colleges 2016,” available online and on newsstands Sept. 29."We are pleased once again to receive this recognition from U.S. News & World Report," said OBU President Dr. David W. Whitlock. "For more than two decades, these rankings have publicly recognized the commitment to excellence and the vision for academic success which we value so highly at OBU. These rankings are the direct result of the dedication of our faculty, staff and students to the mission of this university, as we strive to deliver the highest quality Christian liberal arts education."OBU is ranked fourth on the list of “Best Regional Colleges of the West,” retaining its same ranking as 2015. This is the 24th consecutive year OBU has been ranked in the top 10. According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the “Best Regional Colleges” focus almost entirely on the undergraduate experience, including institutions that offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts, such as business, education and nursing."These rankings recognize yet again OBU's commitment to the highest level of academic excellence," said Dr. Stan Norman, provost and executive vice president for campus life. "Our faculty and staff are fully committed to the success of our students, and we are excited to see this recognition for their sacrifice and dedication. Their efforts make these annual rankings a reality."OBU ranked ninth on the “Regional Colleges of the West” list for the “Great Schools, Great Prices” rankings, underscoring the affordability and value of an education at OBU. The university moved up one spot from last year’s ranking of 10th.The calculations for the “Great Schools, Great Prices” rakings take into account a school’s academic quality, based on its U.S. News “Best Colleges” ranking, and the 2014-15 net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools in or near the top half of their U.S. News ranking categories are included because U.S. News considers the most significant values to be among colleges that perform well academically."We are grateful for the continued recognition of OBU’s high standards of excellence by U.S. News and World Report,” said Bruce Perkins, associate vice president of enrollment management. “These rankings attest to the quality of academic instruction, the high degree of student satisfaction, and the affordability of an OBU degree. We are excited to see that our story, and the impact this university is making on so many lives, is being recognized throughout the nation.”OBU was one of only two institutions to qualify on the Regional Colleges of the West list for “A-Plus Schools for B Students.” These rankings are based on two variables, the school’s performance in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” rankings and the average freshman retention rate. The list includes exceptional colleges and universities which provide resources for academically average students to achieve success.According to information provided by U.S. News, their annual rankings system rests on two pillars. It relies on quantitative measures which education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and on the magazine’s nonpartisan view of “what matters in education.” First, schools are categorized by mission, which is derived from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The Carnegie classification has been the basis of the Best Colleges ranking since U.S. News’s first publication three decades ago.The Best Colleges package then examines how schools compare on a set of up to 16 indicators of excellence. Among the factors weighed in determining the rankings are: graduation and retention rates (22.5 percent), assessment of excellence (22.5 percent), faculty resources (20 percent), student selectivity (12.5 percent), financial resources (10 percent), graduation rate performance (7.5 percent), and alumni giving (5 percent). A more detailed explanation is available on the U.S. News website. For more information on OBU, visit www.okbu.edu. For a more detailed look at the rankings, visit www.usnews.com/colleges.With campuses in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma City, OBU offers 10 bachelor’s degrees with 86 fields of study and four master’s degree programs. The Christian liberal arts university has an overall enrollment of 1,986, with students from 42 states and 30 other countries. OBU has been rated as one of the top 10 regional colleges in the West by U.S. News and World Report for 24 consecutive years and has been Oklahoma’s highest rated regional college in the U.S. News rankings for 22 consecutive years. OBU is one of three universities in Oklahoma and the only private Oklahoma university listed on Great Value College’s rankings of 50 Great Affordable Colleges in the Midwest. Forbes.com consistently ranks OBU as a top university in Oklahoma and the Princeton Review has named OBU one of the best colleges and universities in the western United States for 11 consecutive years.

IBA sees barriers falling as proton beams tested in more cancersProton-beam therapy may need the world's most expensive medical machines but barriers to its use are falling fast as doctors test the super precise form of radiation in the treatment of a widening range of cancers, according to the leader in the field.Belgium's Ion Beam Applications (IBA), which has a market share of around 50 percent, has a growing pipeline of potential proton therapy business worth more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion), its finance chief Jean-Marc Bothy said."We don't see any exhaustion of the pipeline at all. It's very promising how new opportunities are developing, while existing ones continue," he told Reuters during a visit to London.IBA, which raised its revenue forecast for 2015 last month, has been a star of the European life sciences sector recently, with its shares up 95 percent so far this year. The strong outlook has been driven by growing interest among cancer doctors and the introduction of more compact machines with a single treatment room, which are cheaper than traditional very large multi-room installations. Bothy said there were now 122 proton therapy clinical trials in progress targeting more than a dozen different cancers."Not only are the number of clinical studies into proton therapy booming but they are no longer limited to brain, ocular, pediatric and prostate cancers," he said. These days the technology is also being tested in liver, lung, gastric and pancreatic cancers, for example. Specialists are also investigating its use to treat left breast cancer, in order to minimize damage to the heart. The process requires a beam of protons accelerated to two-thirds the speed of light. Since protons cause little damage to cells they pass through but are very good at killing tumors at the end of their path, damage to surrounding tissue is limited. That makes them well suited to treating cancers in parts of the body where there is little room for error. But there has been a debate as to whether proton therapy is worth using in more common cancers, without more evidence.Proton therapy hit the headlines in Britain last year when five-year-old Ashya King was removed from hospital by his parents, against the advice of doctors, and flown to Prague for proton treatment using an IBA machine. The family say he is now free of cancer. In the United States, proton therapy costs about $1,100 per treatment session, or fraction, nearly double regular intensity-modulated radiation. Patients may receive 30 or more fractions.Although half of all cancer patients receive radiation as part of their treatment, only 1 percent get proton beams. In future, IBA believes that could rise to 15 to 20 percent. IBA faces fierce competition in the growing market from rivals such as Varian Medical Systems and Hitachi.Bothy said the Belgian group would fight to keep market share but wouldn't sell at any price, noting that the cost of its Proteus One single-room system had already come down to around $20 million from $25 million at launch.Currently, proton therapy is most common in North America and Europe but Bothy said there were big untapped opportunities in China, Japan and Latin America.

As Wildfires Continue to Burn, New Maps Shows Expansion of Wildland-Urban InterfaceA n e w U . S . Fo r e s t Service report shows the continued expansion of housing development near forests, an area r e f e r r e d t o a s t h e W i l d l a n d - U r b a n Interface (WUI), with direct implications for the cost of wildf ire f ight ing . Increas ing densities of people and infrastructure in the WUI m a k e s w i l d f i r e m a n a g e m e n t m o r e complex and requires more firefighting assets to ensure an appropriate, s a f e a n d e f f e c t i v e response, which in turn drives up the cost of f i g h t i n g w i l d f i r e s . Expansion of the WUI has direct implications for wildfire management as more of the Forest Service's resources are s p e n t e a c h y e a r t o provide the firefighters, aircraft and other assets
necessary to protect l i ves , p roper ty and natural resources in the wildland urban interface regions. In addition, overall fire seasons have grown longer, and the f requency, s ize and severity of wildland fires has increased.I n r e c e n t d e c a d e s , research has shown a steady increase in the area that is part of the
WUI, as documented and visually depicted in a new publication titled, " The 2010 Wildland-Urban Interface of the Conterminous United States." The percent of h o m e s i n t h e W U I increased by over five percent between 2000 and 2010 (latest data available). As of 2010, the WUI of the lower 48 states includes about 44
m i l l i o n h o u s e s , equivalent to one in every three houses in the country, with the highest concentrations of houses in the WUI in California, Texas and Florida. The publication includes new, high-resolution maps showing housing density, land ownership, land cover and wildland vegetation cover for each state.
" T h e e x p a n d i n g wildland urban interface is a critical issue for wildland firefighting and for the conservation of our forests," said Robert Bonnie. "More people, h o m e s , a n d infrastructure are at risk than ever before. As the WUI grows, our fire fighters must commit greater resources to p r o t e c t h o m e s a n d p r o p e r t y w h i c h dramatically increases t h e c o s t o f f i r e suppression."The cost of wildfire
suppression reached a record $243 in a one week period during the height of suppression activity in late August. In 2015, 52% of the Forest Service budget was set a s i d e f o r f i r e suppression, up from 1 6 % i n 1 9 9 5 . B y September 2015, the Fo r e s t S e r v i c e h a d already exceeded the funding set aside for fire suppression and was forced to borrow funds meant for other Forest
Service activities. The b i p a r t i s a n Wi l d f i r e Disaster Funding Act,

Statement from
Agriculture
Secretary Tom
Vilsack on New
Data Showing
National Food
Security Rate is
Strongest since
before the
RecessionAgriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today issued the following statement on the release of the U S D A E c o n o m i c Research Service analysis Household Food Security in the United States in 2014:“ Today ' s repor t i s a p o s i t i v e s i g n a l t h a t reflects a recovering and growing economy. Food security for households w i t h c h i l d r e n , a n d households overall, is the strongest it's been since before the Recession. Two million fewer people live i n a s t a t e o f f o o d i n s e c u r i t y t o d a y compared to 2011. This report also reflects the continued importance of a n t i - p o v e r t y a n d n u t r i t i o n p r o g r a m s , including SNAP and healthier school meals, which help to keep food insecurity from rising, and efforts to improve employment and training programs that help low-income people obtain the skills they need to find good paying jobs so they can prov ide enough healthy food for their families."
Service activities. The b ipar t i san Wi ld f i r e Disaster Funding Act, already introduced in the House and Senate, is a n i m p o r t a n t s t e p forward in addressing the funding problems. T h e p r o p o s e d l e g i s l a t i o n , w h i c h m i r r o r s a s i m i l a r proposal in President Obama's Fiscal Year 2016 Budget, would provide a fiscally
responsible mechanism to treat wildfires more l i k e o t h e r n a t u r a l d i sas te rs , end " f i re transfers" and partially replenish the ability to restore resilient forests and protect against future fire outbreaks.While WUI expansion h a s i n c r e a s e d t h e likelihood that wildfire will threaten structures and people and increase the number of people
affected by wildfire, not all WUI acres are at high risk of wildfire or the o n l y m a n a g e m e n t concern. Increased risk of invasive species and disruption of wildlife and ecosystem processes often accompany human habitation, making the WUI maps an important guide in conservation work.To download a copy of this publication, visit the N o r t h e r n Re s e a r c h Station's website.The mission of the Forest Service, part of the U.S. D e p a r t m e n t o f Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity, and product iv i ty o f the Nation's forests and
grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public l a n d , p r o v i d e s assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest f o r e s t r y r e s e a r c h organizat ion in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $ 1 3 b i l l i o n t o t h e economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the Nation's clean water s u p p l y , a v a l u e estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The agency has either a direct or indirect
role in stewardship of about 80 percent of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of
which 100 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live.
Petroleum History: Prophet Of Spindletop, UT Royalties, & Petro's 100th Anniversary
August 27, 1959 - “No ofcial act could give me greater pleasure than to dedicate this stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the petroleum industry,” declares the keynote speaker in 1959.U.S. Postmaster General Arthur Summereld addresses a large crowd gathered for “Oil Centennial Day” in Titusville, Pennsylvania.During his introduction of the new four-cent commemorative postage stamp, he describes the vital role of petroleum in war and peace.
“”The American people have great reason to be indebted to this industry,” Summereld proclaims. “It has supplied most of the power that has made the American standard of living possible.”Fifty years later, the Postal Service Stamp Advisory Committee in 2009 rejects requests for a stamp recognizing the 150th anniversary of the U.S. petroleum industry (after granting commemorative stamps for Kermit the Frog and nine other Muppets).

WHO ARE WE?We are suffering from an identity crisis. By we, I mean the entire state of Oklahoma. Where and what are we exactly? We have friendly, good-hearted people but how does the rest of the country view us?Are we the South? For me, that’s what feels most appropriate. I never even heard the word “soda” when referring to a soft drink until I was well into adulthood. People that I grew up with had distinctive southern drawls. Sweet tea, front porches, summer heat and fried foods were all a staple growing up in southeastern Oklahoma. What about the Midwest? That one does not jive at all. We don’t have nasally accents, don’t suffer from harsh winters and are well below the Mason-Dixon line. And this is the one that is creeping into our lives!I rarely make efforts to see Hollywood stars in person. But when my fake boyfriend Kevin Costner made an appearance in OKC with his almost as fake band, I caved. The venue was small and I could get a good look at that handsome face. As soon as he came on stage, he welcomed the crowd by saying
“Oklahoma! You can’t get anymore Midwest than right here!” While the rest of his lame girlfriends screamed their approval, I darn near walked out. I broke up with him right then and there. Two of my Yankee transplant friends teach elementary school here. During a conversation they said they considered Oklahoma part of the Midwest. When I pointed out that the very textbook from which they teach, lumps it into the South, they laughed at me. Humph.Sad thing is, I don’t think the deep-south wants us. But to be honest, I don’t really want them either. Because of the massive southern immigration to our Free state post Civil War, we have their influence. But because we were never a Slave state, we have freedom from a darker time in history. So I guess we should just embrace the fact that we are lots of good things. Southern hospitality coupled with Western pioneer spirit.Where are we? - Right in the middle of everything. What are we? - A state with more geographic diversity than any in the United States. Who are we? We are Oklahomans. Your Heartland.

Arvest Bank has got to be one of the most unprofessional and unorganized banks I have ever worked with. I had a new air system put in and the lender was this bank. My application address and phone number was entered wrong at the Tulsa branch, which back logged the payment book arriving throwing the payment into late status because the payment book came back to the back, of course it would with the wrong address. I received an apology call for their mistake on Wednesday and setup an autopay to stop any further issues. Thursday morning I get a very rude call from their collections department telling me that “I’m tired of dealing with this” and that is would go on my credit, so I had to speak to the president of the branch who again apologized and said the situation had been corrected. I have a credit score of 840 and they treated me like a criminal! This is why I do not bank there and have now spoken to my bank and asked to buy this loan out which is in process now. Thank you
Several ofcers at OSP have not been receiving a salary check for weeks now due to in my opinion an individuals illegal transaction on the computer about these ofcers. It has been a great hardship for buying rent, food, gas and groceries for these ofcers. My hope is for OSP will have enough concern to pay them what they have earned in spite of this illegal transaction.
That was a wonderful letter in Sunday's paper about how messed up the city council is. We need more information like that. Thank you
As high as taxes are trying to get to be in Pittsburgh county, a man cannot afford to be poor.
There are two councilmen absent from the special tax meeting called. I wonder which two will be off this coming Tuesday night, these just keep rotating and rotating and rotating.
How do you talk to one of your city councilmen? According to city ordinance, they have to have a contact number well posted. Too many of them have unlisted phone numbers which is a violation of city ordinance. I have not been able to talk to my councilmen in years because he had an unlisted number.
This is for the Superintendent of our Public Schools. Is the new treasurer one of your best friends? Or is she a relative, she has to be something because no body knew anything about it. Everyone you hire is either a best friend or a relative, we are just kind of wondering who it is this time.

Donald Trump will never be the American president, but he gets my vote for "Bloviator in Chief"!
I almost got hit by two different distracted drivers in less than a minute today. Both swerved in my lane and both on phones. How about we treat them with the same venom we do drunk drivers? They are just as thoughtless and dangerous.
To me, Obama's "Hope and Change" has turned into "Divide and Conquer!" In keeping with a socialistic agenda for control of a country, he has actively divided our country by class, race, ethnicity, politics and morals. I am tired of a president who is a divider. I want a president who is a multiplier.
I adored the Miss Outstanding Teen article, it brought me to tears! Great job Kal-El Shelton!

Thank you, thank you to the wonderful person who turned in the credit card I lost at the post ofce. I believe the vast majority of people are good and honest. I'm so blessed you were one of those people. The postal e m p l o y e e w a s wonderful also when I inquired about it. Bless you my friend.
Reading a few of these Sound Offs, I am getting the feeling that someone if xing to blow the lid off several issues we have here in our city. Will be interesting to see what all the build up is about. I will keep posted.
Love has no age barrier if two consent. Quit being so judgmental!

Watch for Anaplasmosis in
CattleAnaplasmosis is an infectious disease in cattle that infects red b l o o d c e l l s . I t i s t r a n s m i t t e d f r o m animal to animal by biting flies (horsefly, stable fly), ticks and contaminated needles o r s u r g i c a l i n s t r u m e n t s (dehorners, castration instruments, tattoo instruments).T h e d i s e a s e i s typically age related. Claves less than one year of age usually show no symptoms of this disease and are c o n s i d e r e d m i l d . Cattle 12 to 24 months of age can show acute signs of the disease, but it is rarely fatal. However, animals that are two years and older
will show acute signs of the disease, and mortality rates may be as great as 50% if a n i m a l s a r e l e f t untreated.Outbreaks generally occur in late summer and early fall. The incubation period is from 21 to 45 days, with an average of length of 30 days. Early clinical signs include rectal temperature of 104F to 107F, a decrease in appetite, p a l e m u c o u s membranes, lethargy, a d e c r e a s e i n m i l k p r o d u c t i o n a n d w e a k n e s s . A s t h e disease progresses, other signs may be noted such as weight loss, yellowed mucous m e m b r a n e s , c o n s t i p a t i o n , excitation, abortion and death. Death occurs due to the large number of red blood cells being lost. This inhibits the animal’s ab i l i ty to provide adequate oxygen to the t issues, and death o c c u r s d u e t o suffocation.Prevention of this d i s e a s e c a n i n c o r p o r a t e m a n y factors. Insect control
can be difficult, but pesticide applications to the herd may limit t h e n u m b e r o f po ten t i a l vec to r s . F e e d i n g chlortetracycline at the rate of 0.5 mg per pound of cow body weight during the vector season will help prevent transmission of anaplasmosis. CTC may be included in feed, mineral mix or feed blocks.It also is important to b e m i n d f u l o f contaminated needles or instruments. When performing herd work, change needles often, and keep instruments i n a d i s i n f e c t a n t b e t w e e n u s e s .
