Why does the future belong to fiber optics?

In modern telecommunications the demand for bandwidth grows at a geometric rate. According to the directive of the European Union, by 2020 all EU citizens should have access to the network with a throughput exceeding 30 Mbps, and half of the households even more than 100 Mbps.

Support for such wide bandwidths, multiplied by the number of users, is virtually impossible with the use of copper cables. Additionally, low attenuation of fiber optic cables allows for signal transmission without regeneration over distances of hundreds of kilometers.

A great advantage of optical fiber is its versatility - it can simultaneously provide a range of services: VoIP, broadband Internet, high-definition digital TV, video monitoring.

So far, the services required separate installations - telephone cables, twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, and individual junction boxes.

In the future, which begins today, the only cables needed are the optical fibers and AC power cables. Additionally, due to the immunity of optical cables to electromagnetic interference, their small transverse section and low weight, the both kinds of cables can be routed in common conduits. It considerably facilitates the installation process and reduces costs.

The undoubted advantages of optical transmission makes the migration from copper to optical technology inevitable, and the replacement of copper cabling by fiber optics is a safe investment that will pay off many times in the future.

Main features of fiber optic systems

Diversity of system capacity (FTTC, FTTB, FTTH) which in connection with long range provides good scalability for different population density and the range of provided services;

Reduction of the total costs of subscriber networks - one, integrated network for all services - radical increase of the range of passive networks, up to many kilometers - no need for repeaters in local systems (for comparison - the length of Ethernet UTP cable between active nodes is limited to 100 m. - high system redundancy ensured by multi-fiber cables and integration of services - natural immunity to electromagnetic interference and possibility of routing in common conduits with AC power cabling

Many times higher bandwidth, which is especially important for seamless HD video transmission;

Flexible and scalable framework - active devices can be chosen in accordance with design objectives;

Very high reliability;

Difficult eavesdropping or interception of the transmitted data;

Reduced costs of network management and monitoring - higher cable durability in comparison with copper technology, easier maintenance of one integrated network, joint monitoring system.

This solution allows for transmission of analog video from security cameras and for remote PTZ control over long distances, without deterioration of signal quality or a risk of failure in communication due to atmospheric discharges.

CCTV system

TERRA Opti is a comprehensive system of distribution of radio and television channels in large buildings and complexes. The system consists of elements responsible for reception of channels selected by the investor, injection of additional content (e.g. video from CCTV cameras), and s i gn a l d i s t r i b u t i o n ( m e d i a co nve r te r s , p a s s i ve components).

Mechanical splices and quick-assembly connectors allow for fast, easy, and reliable installation of systems based on glass optical fibers.

In the case of UTP cat. 5e cable, the maximum length of a cable segment is 100 meters, so longer transmission lines would require additional active hardware. A good alternative is the use of optical point-to-point links. They are based on media converters which change electrical signals (Ethernet data stream) coming via typical STP/UTP cable into modulated light signal transmitted via optical cable, and vice versa. In the case of single-mode optical fibers, one cable segment can be as long as 40 km.

ULTIMODE WDM L11521-L11541Media converters from WDM series allow transmission speeds up to 1 Gbps. Due to t h e u s e o f w a v e l e n g t h - d i v i s i o n mult ip lex ing technology ( W D M ) , different wavelengths of laser light carry different signals over one strand of fiber. It significantly lowers installation or leasing costs, especially in the case of long links (up to 40 km).

These media conver ters change electrical signals (Ethernet data stream) coming via typical STP/UTP cable into modulated light signal transmitted via two single-mode fibers, and vice versa. The maximum transmission speed is 1 Gbps, transmission range up to 40 km (depends on the model).

The optical transmitters from MOS series should be selected appropriately to the transmission distances (up to tens of kilometers) and split ratios (there are available 6 models with different output optical power).

The basic "A" version is suitable for local distribution even in large buildings (in some cases there should be used optical receivers with increased sensitivity).

Terra headend Terra headends are especially advantageous where the owners or managers should decide about the list of channels.

No need for additional devices (STBs, satellite receivers, decoders) is very important in the case of large hotels, hospitals, sanatoriums etc. The systems can be installed in new buildings or used for modernization of existing shared antenna systems, both in line (pass-through) and tree (with splitters and taps) topologies. When the system should be installed in scattered locations and/or be very extensive, the signals from the headend can be transmitted by optical means, using optical transmitters and receivers from TERRA Opti platform.

CCTV system

Many CCTV systems still use analog cameras. In the case of long distances between some cameras and the DVR, it is difficult or even impossible to transmit the baseband video without a substantial loss of quality caused by long coaxial cables or signal transformation.Any transmission problems are eliminated by the use of optical video converters.

ULTIMODE video converters offer efficient, long-range transmission: in WDM technology, via one optical fiber over distances up to 20 km (single- mode fiber) over distances up to 2 km (multimode fiber) of baseband video from up to 16 cameras in any standard (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) of additional, one-way data channel (RS-485) of additional, one-way audio channel of alarm signals

building system

Ultimode Building System is the latest solution of fiber optic cabling minimizing the number of splices. The system provides a complete range of products for deployment of fiber optic links i n e a c h a p a r t m e n t / o f f i c e, including "open space" offices and MDUs.

Current entertainment applications, e s p e c i a l l y h i g h d e f i n i t i o n m e d i a streaming and interactive apps, place high demands on Internet bandwidth. Copper cables do not meet the growing expectations of customers, so the

inevitable step is transition to Fiber To The Home (FTTH) architecture, with optical fiber entering each home or office. Ultimode Building System is a solution that allows for easy installation of fiber optic networks in buildings. The core of the system is family of ULTIMODE BS easy access cables which minimize the number of permanent and pluggable connections in optical access networks.

Optical fibers are easily extracted from breaking windows in the riser cable. Due to special construction of the cable, the windows can be cut without any risk for the fibers, which are directly connected to the subscribers' optical network units.

The principles of using ULTIMODE BS cables.

1. BS ULTIMODE cable should berouted to the top story of the building (point A).

2. In order to connect a fiber to a subscriber's optical network unit in point D, it is necessary to cut out windows in the tube in points B and C; cut a selected fiber in point B and pull it out of the window in point C. The extracted fiber routed to the point D must be protected in a tube.

3. The windows in points B and C should be protected with appropriate shields.

Multi-Dwelling Units

Terra Opti - referencesTERRA is a leading world manufacturer of equipment for reception and distribution of TV signals in medium and large-size SMATV and CATV systems.TERRA devices work in hundreds of thousands of locations in Poland and around the world. MMH-3000 headends have been installed e.g. in Focus and System hotel networks, <!!! to chyba miao by Pure Life> Pure Life fitness club at Jagiellonian University campus, Vis-A Vis hotel in Olenica, Hydropower Plants in Niedzica.

The following diagram presents the concept of the infrastructure in such places, for providing availability of all satell ite signals in a given geographical location.

A solution for a stadium may be based on Terra headend providing signals via optical network to tens of televisions located within the stadium area (in VIP boxes, press gallery,

food corners etc). The conversion from optical medium to coaxial cable is performed by optical nodes at the TV sets.The advantage of such a solution is its high integrity and capability of providing and transmitting high quality content. The integrity includes optional access to other broadband services with the use of the same optical fiber coming from the optical line termination (OLT).

Highest quality picture and sound

The core of the system is digital, compact Terra MMH-3000 headend. The wide range of available modules allows for reception and distribution of any DVB-S/S2 channels and terrestrial DVB-T broadcasts preserving the original digital quality of picture an sound. The system can receive and distribute HD channels and several audio tracks for each channel.

Hybrid or FTTS networks

The wide range of Terra optical nodes has b e e n p r e p a r e d f o r t w o k i n d s o f distribution networks: hybrid network with segments with copper cabling, and FTTS (Fibrer To The Subscriber) where the fiber is run to the subscriber's outlet connected with individual optical node.

Networks from a dozen to several thousand outlets

Terra Opti system provides a line of optical transmitters with different output power that are suitable for networks with very different numbers of nodes.

Hundreds of channels

Thanks to digital transmission standards at the output of Terra headend (DVB-C/T), the system can distribute even hundreds of channels.

Versatility - distribution of analog and digital channels

A wide range of available modules provides options for distribution in the network TV channels in analog form suitable for older TV sets.

Distribution of audio-video from media players etc.

DVB-T modulators allow for distribution of audio-video content from any sources a s " p r i v a t e " c h a n n e l s i n D V B -T multiplexes.

No need for set-top-boxes

The system can decode pay-TV channels and distribute them in the form that is suitable for direct reception by regular TV sets.

Direct integration with CCTV system

Video from CC T V cameras can be encoded and distributed as DVB-T channels in the network (using MD-330 and TRX-360 modules). The users can monitor the areas captured by the cameras directly on the their TV screens.

Simple configuration, management and maintenance

The configuration of the headend takes several to several tens of minutes, depending on the number of modules. Clear and user-friendly interface of the configuration software is easy to use for every installer.

Opti

For many years, coaxial copper cables have been the basic transmission medium in television distribution networks.

However, the recently built large-scale installations are mainly based on optical fiber technology. The reason is that copper cabling in large conference and sport facilities, big hotels, housing developments etc. is more expensive for the investors and limits the capabilities of the systems that can be offered by the design offices and installation companies.

The problems with copper cabling are known e.g. by owners of large hotel complexes (different signal quality in various parts of their properties).

High throughput

Fiber optic networks offer subscribers much higher throughput, even above 1 Gbps. A single fiber can provide multiple services: Voice over IP (VoIP), broadband Internet access, high-definition digital television.

Mechanical splices and fiber optic connectors provide a modern way of terminating and connecting optical fibers. With both technologically advanced and simple to use solutions, they ensure very good transmission characteristics. That 's why mechanic al connec tions are b ecoming increasingly popular.

Mechanical splices and quick-assembly connectors can be used universally instead of fusion splicing. The elimination of complicated and costly process makes the installation of a system much simpler and faster.

The installer does not need any special devices - the operations of stripping and cleaving can be carried out with basic tools. The final operation is just inserting the fiber end(s) to the splice or connector.

Due to the fact that there is no need for gluing and polishing, the installer does not waste time for preparing the materials and a work bench, and the whole assembling process takes no more than 30 seconds. These connections usually can be disconnected to reconfigure the network, and used again.

connectionImmunity to power and lighting surgesAs isolators, optical fibers do not carry any power or lightning surges, in opposite to the copper wiring. So, there is no need for any additional protection against lightning surges. It is especially important in the case of outdoor installations (overhead links between buildings, to IP intercoms etc).

Ease of installation

The speed and ease of installation is provided by OptoLock connectors. The user should only cut the POF cable(s) to length as needed (with a dedicated POF cutter), and simply insert the fibers to the ports. It eliminates the need to pay for specialized services, which is necessary in the case of optical glass fibers.

Electromagnetic neutrality

POF cables are immune to electromagnetic interference anddo not cause such disturbances, so they can be laid directly by power or other cables, in the same conduits. This solution reduces the effort and cost of creating home/SOHO/small office networks, because it is much easier to mount network cables in parallel with existing wiring than to build separate conduits.

Small size and high durability

The decisive advantage of POF cables is their small size. The external diameter of one fiber is only 2.2 mm, which makes it easy to hide the cable behind skirting boards and pull through conduits. The core of the fiber is made of PMMA ("acrylic glass"), which provides high strength, resistance to UV and visible light transparency. The cable jacket is made of PE (polyethylene), which is suitable for outdoor applications.

Diversity of system capacity (FTTC, FTTB, FTTH) which in connection with long range provides good scalability for different population density and the range of provided services;

Many times higher bandwidth, which is especially important for seamless HD video transmission;

Flexible and scalable framework - active devices can be chosen in accordance with design objectives;

Very high reliability;

Difficult eavesdropping or interception of the transmitted data;
