Foreword by the BishopThe many friends o f “ Jane Furse’’ who read this report, will

find much for which they will be profoundly thankful. It would be misleading to give the impression that the year covered by this report has been an easy time. There have been difficulties, as there will always be difficulties wherever men and women seek to give a practical expression to the love o f God. But in this report you will find little indication o f those difficulties. For those who are engaged in this work o f ours are much too conscious o f what, in spite o f the difficulties, God has achieved through their labour. The Priest-in-charge writes of the building and dedication of two new churches, in which new congregations are being won to the love and service of God; the Medical Superintendent refers to the spectacular increase in the number of patients cared for by the Hospital and its Clinics — an increase which is due to a growtii in confidence o f the community, and not, I am sure, disease; and the Matron in her report is able to give the quite remarkable results o f the nursing examinations. The M atron’s report contains what is perhaps the most exciting item in the whole report. For she is able to tell us that the South African Nursing Council has recognised Jane Furse Hospital as a Class I Training School. There are very few, if any, other Mission Hospitals in this category. The fact that our Nursing School has received this recognition is undoubtedly largely due to the devoted work of the Matron and her staff. Yes, indeed, as you read this report you will find there is much for which to thank God.

Soon after Dr. Downing wrote his section of the report he was taken seriously ill and he had to go to Johannesburg for examination. He underwent a serious operation, and for a time it was feared that he might have to have a further operation. But we are all relieved that this now seems unnecessary. I hope that after a period of convalescence he will soon be back again at the work to which he has given himself so fully.

I should like to add my thanks to those expressed in the report to all those who in any w ay labour or pray for the work we are doing together at “ Jane” . May God give you the strength to persevere in this good work.

THE SEKHUKHUNILAND MISSIONThe Mission work has made steady progress in spite of in

creasing uncertainties and the general feelings of tension in the Reserve. Those o f us who are privileged to work amongst the Bapedi people in this district, whether in direct evangelisation or in the work o f healing, would all say how conscious we are of the presence o f G od and o f His protecting care in the face of so many dangers and troubles; and we are only too anxious to be allowed to continue our work o f building up the Church here.

On the Mission side, this year has seen the dedication of two district churches — St. Andrew ’s Church at Schoonoord, and the Church of the H oly Spirit at Phasha, next to M ohlaletse: it is hoped that these will both become the centres of thriving and growing congregations.

A Revival W eek , conducted by the Rev. I. A . Semenya, of W itbank, was held at Jane Furse in February. This was very well- supported and much keenness and enthusiasm was shown, both on the part of the local Church people and by members of the Hospital staff. W e pray that the zeal and enthusiasm shown during the Revival W eek will not quickly evaporate but will last, and that the fruits o f the Revival will be seen in the months to come.

Fr. Northcott was recalled to England last year, and Fr. Carter has taken his place here. Fr. Carter has a record of forty years unbroken work in Johannesburg and on the Reef, and he has great experience of the African People, and is known by so many of them. W e trust that he will be able to continue his work amongst them here for many years to come.

St. Andrew's Church, Schoonoord.

W e are still awaiting the proposed removal of some o f the local people to another part of the Reserve, and we hear that further removals from other areas also are to be carried out soon. W h en such removals take place we shall do our best to see that the Church goes with the people and that the work of evangelisation is maintained.

Once again we wish to thank all those who so generously support and help our work by their prayers and alms. W e are very grateful to them.

THE MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORTSome time must needs elapse between the end of the year

(which for us is March 31st) and the time when statistics, accounts, etc., are available. A t the time of writing I have all the facts and figures before me, including the balance sheet in the rough. I expected to find some increase in the numbers of patients treated and possibly some increase in expenditure, but to be faced by an increase of nearly 20,000 in-patient days has been quite a shock. The daily average has gone up from 212 to 265 and although there has naturally been a rise in expenditure, the cost per patient per day has worked out at the low figure of 14/1 d-

At the district clinics the people pay fees (except in T.B. cases) and the sum of over £1,200 has been collected which does show an appreciation of the services rendered. The hospital has indeed had a very busy year and it would appear that the high tide of increasing work has not yet been reached. Although one is pleased with progress, it is with some concern that one notes the rising numbers, for a hospital such as ours cannot expand indefinitely. A number o f cases admitted to hospital could be safely treated at a clinic if seen daily by a trained nurse, so it is hoped that such trained clinic nurses will soon be found.

In thinking o f our clinic work we think o f work done under most primitive and difficult conditions for at present at only two places have we adequate buildings and it is sad to think that in some districts where we have worked for over 20 years patients still have to be attended to in mud huts or under the trees. W e plan for simple but adequate buildings in each of the nine districts visited; there are still difficulties to be overcome before our plans can be fully realised but I have no doubt that progress will be made and that in the near future doctors and nurses will be able to work under better conditions and we shall be able to help those who live miles from the hospital much better than we do at present. The patients turn up each week in hundreds to see the doctor and nurse; many receive treatment on the spot or receive medicine to take home, whilst those in need of hospitalisation are carried to hospital on lorry or ambulance. During the year there have been 20.909 attendances made as compared with 17,694 in 1955. At Monsterlus Clinic, Sister W ithers’ work, especially ante-natal and infant welfare, grows steadily and as it is proposed by the Native Affairs Department to establish a village next door to our clinic, I have no doubt Sister’s services will be in even greater demand.

The staff position has been much easier this year. Dr. Yenson was able to come before we lost the help of Dr. Pratt-Johnson and Dr. W essels, both of whom gave such splendid help, especially in the eye work. Dr. Pratt-Johnson is now studying in America and Dr. W essels has settled in the specialist job which was awaiting him. W e shall always feel grateful to Dr. Baxter, who in spite of urgent family matters requiring her presence in England, was able to stay on until Dr. Horsfall arrived to replace her. Dr. Davies arrived in January and is rapidly developing the work o f the laboratory. Matron will no doubt be reporting in the nursing staff position. Sufficient for me to say that both student nurses and

Page 10: DIOCESE of PRETORIA REPORT - Historical Papers, Wits ......DIOCESE of PRETORIA - ft 'S$ REPORT of the Jane Furse Memorial Hospital and of the Sekhukhtmiland Mission for the period

senior nursing staff maintained at a high level, the efficient working o f the hospital and that their devotion to their work has been obvious to all. Changes may come but we shall always be both proud and thankful that the training of nurses for the highest of qualifications has been carried on here for so long.

The rebuilding and alterations within the hospital have progressed steadily. The new theatre block is now in use and the X -ray department which has lived for nearly five years on a verandah will shortly occupy its planned position. The dispensary alterations will soon also be on the way. African staff cottages have been completed and we hope that the quarters for other single workers will soon be started. The long awaited laundry is now in operation and is increasing its output of clean linen every day.

W e cannot be too grateful for all the help and co-operation of the Provincial Government, the Union Health Department, and the Native Affairs Department. They have in a big way provided the tools and we are proud to do the work. The gifts in kind and money received from firms, private subscribers and from congregations in the church have increased and we are thankful for all that has been so generously given.

In conclusion may I ask for the continued prayers and help of all who read this report that we who work here ‘may continue as workers together with God to bring healing to those broken in body and in spirit.

THE MATRON'S REPORTOur vocation is not to go forth and reap in our Father's fields,

Jesus does not say to us, “ Look down and reap the harvest,” “ Ask M e for labourers and they shall be sent.” It is for us to train the labourers who will spread the glad tidings of the Gospel through their ministry of healing the sick and such is the vocation o f the Jane Furse Hospital. W h y fear to offer yourselves to share in such a privileged vocation of training African nurses who are being called today to take posts o f responsibility in the nursing field?

During my furlough it was my hope that sufficient funds would be found to begin the building o f the new Nurses’ Training College. This hope is still a dream and longing of the 66 student nurses at “ Jane” .

It gives great pleasure to quote from a letter received from the South African Nursing Council. “ I have pleasure in informing you that it has been decided to re-classify the Training School as a Class I Training School with affect from the 1st January, 1957.”

The examination results for the year 1956 are as follow s:

Staff Nurse Margaret Thembe, a former trainee at Jane, having completed her midwifery training, has been promoted to the position o f Sister. I am sure that the news that Jane Furse Hospital Training School badge is now available to nurses who have completed their training will be received with joy by the student nurses at “ Jane” .

The new theatres have been well used since the day o f opening on 22nd February. The student nurses look forward to their turn to do their theatre training. Structural alterations are taking place in the old theatre which will be used as an X -ray department.

Miss MighelL the Sewing Room Supervisor, with her diversity of gifts set the wheels of the laundry turning. There have been many creaks and groans but owing to her untiring efforts and willingness to accept the best from “ trial and error methods' , "Jane” has another asset in the hospital laundry and the linen without doubt is cleaner than it has ever been before.

Miss Frere, after ten years service to the hospital as Physiotherapist, left for England in January. Her selfless devoted service leaves behind in Sekhukhuniland many confident patients in that branch o f medicine. Her selflessness has been and will remain an inspiration to all who know and worked with her.

Page 12: DIOCESE of PRETORIA REPORT - Historical Papers, Wits ......DIOCESE of PRETORIA - ft 'S$ REPORT of the Jane Furse Memorial Hospital and of the Sekhukhtmiland Mission for the period

Once again I would extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff and all friends of the hospital, and I would like them to know how much our strength and support depends on their continued prayers. It is only in that strength that the future can be faced, bringing its undoubted problems and burdens, and confronted as we are with the great needs of the mission field which requires the utmost generosity in spirit and kind.
