Dear Dining for Women Family,

Recap:OurDFWgrantpurposeistocoverthemodestsalaryoftheourstaffmidwivesatBumiSehatBali,foroneyear,alsotosupportessentiallife-savingmedicinesandsuppliesusedinchildbirth.

EXPECTEDOUTCOME:HealthyMothersandBabies,womenempoweredbytherespectpaidthemwhilepregnant,birthingandpostpartum.TheBumiSehatmodelofcompassionate,culturallyappropriate,gentle,kind,free,Woman-to-Woman,Midwife-to-Mothercare,includingfreetransporttoandfromourclinicanytimeofdayornightifneeded,24/7365dayeachyear;solvestheproblemswomenfacewhenseekingreproductivehealthcare,asdescribedabove.Bydemonstratingthiswoman-friendlymodelofcaresince1995,BumiSehathasbeguntoeffectpositivechangesontheentiremedicalcommunityandmethodsofpractice,softeningothermedicalprofessionalstobemorewomanandchildfriendly.Wecannotcountthe#sofwomenwhoselivesareactuallysavedbyourservices,butmanysuffercomplicationsthatcouldbelifethreatening.Ourmidwiveshandletheseeventscalmlyandskillfully,whilemaintainingrespectforeachwoman,oftenthenewmotherandherfamilydonotevenknowhowcloseacallitwas.

BumiSehathasnotmadesignificantchangesinourVisionandMission;wecontinuetoservewomenandchildrenwithdevotion,viaourMidwife-to-Mother&Babymodelofcare.ThishasalwaysbeentheobjectiveofYayasanBumiSehat,withthehelpofDFW,wearemeetingourongoinggoalstoservewomenandchildreninthechildbearingcondition.BecauseBali,Indonesiaisalowresourceandhighrisksettingwheremothersareconcerned,thisissoveryimportant.

Progress: Canonlybemeasuredinthechildbirthoutcomes…186gentlebirthssofarthisyear,2,171prenatalcheck-ups,687mothersattendedourfreeprenatalyoga,theBumiSehatlabchecked713people,wedid276postpartumexamsand306neonatalcheck-ups.Whatcannotbecountedarethehugs,thesmiles,thetearsofgratitude,whenamothertellsusthatshewasafraidtogivebirth,becauseshehadnomoneytopay.InIndonesiaamothermaynottakeherbabyhomefromhospital,untilthebillispaidinfull.AtBumiSehat,ourservicesareallfree.Families,whohavemeans,maymakeadonation.However,noonecomingtoBumiSehatneedeverworryaboutcosts.

Outcomes: Inthefirstsixmonthsof2015,withthehelpofDiningforWomen,theBumiSehatMidwiferyTeamhasbeenabletohelpsomanymothershavehealthypregnancies,birthsandpostpartum.Inaddition,100%ofthebabiesbornatBumiSehathavebeenbreastfed.Thisinsuresoptimalhealthandintelligenceplusmuchbetterqualityoflifeforeachchild.Becauseoftheskillandlovingattentionofourmidwives,healthiermothersandbabieshavebeenachieved.

Challenges: Thereismuchtotellyouabout2015sofar.Thebiggestnewsisthatthemuchawaited,BumiSehatBaliclinicisunderconstruction!Thishasbeenaverybigchallenge,forallthewhilewehavepreparedtobuildthenewclinic,BumiSehathasbeencommittedtoneverinterruptingpatientcare.BecauseoftheDiningforWomenGrant,ourMidwife-to-Mother&Babycarehascontinuedseamlessly.

OurbuilderplanstobemovingusintothenewclinicbyAugust2016,justintime,becausetheleaseonouroriginalbuildingisfinished.WatchtheBumiSehatFaceBookpage,forongoingupdatesandphotosoftheconstruction

Sheisfromadisplacedfamily,whomigratedtoBali,tofindlivelihood,onlytofindmorechallenges,isseekingherdegreeinMidwives.

ShewasaBumiSehatbornbaby.Sherankedtopsinherentranceexams,despitemanychallenges.ShewillmakeafineMidwife.

AgusisfromPupuan,amountainfarmingcommunity,wherethereisnomedicalcareforthepeople.Despitethestruggleofbeingafarmingfamily,Aguswasabletofinishhighschool,withtophonors.Hisparentsaresohappythathehasthisopportunitytobecomeanurse,andservehispeople.NormallyBumiSehatdoesfocusourscholarshipgrantsoneducationforgirls,however,Agusissoverydevotedtoserviceofhumanity,andtheneedissogreatinhisvillage,wefelthealsodeservedtoattainhisdreamtobecomeanurse

Unexpected funding and happy changes:

WEknowDFWisinterestedinanychangesintheBumiSehatprogramsconcerningwomenandchildren.Averygoodchange,orratheranexpansionistheadditionofthreenewScholars,allfromunderprivilegedbackgrounds,allstrivingtobeofservicetohumanity.BumiSehat,withthehelpofSokasiBanten,HRAPharmainFranceandJennyBurgessFoundationhasadded3newStudentstoourScholarshipprogram:

This is Sabita Bhatteral, our Bumi Sehat Scholar from Nepal…

Sabita’sfamilywascrushedundertheirstonehouse,inSindhupalchok,theareahardesthitbytheearthquakes.Grandfatherdied,Motherisbadlyinjured.HerFatherhasapermanentspinalinjuryheisparalyzed.Hersistercoveredherbabywithherownbody,asthestonehousefellonthem.Babywasunharmed,theyoungmother’slegwaslateramputated.InthefaceofsomuchlossthisyoungwomanhasbeenservingasaparamedicintheNaubisePublicHealthCenter,workingdayandnight.BecauseofBumiSehat’sdonorsSabitaisnowinnursingschool,andwillachieveherdreamtobecomeaSkilledBirthAttendant,servingherpeople.

AsyouknowNepalsuffereddevastatingearthquakesinAprilandMayof2015.Withinanhourofthe1stquake,DirectRelief,wasonthephonewithme.“Areyougoing?”theyasked,knowingthatBumiSehatisalwaysthebestfirstresponder,caringforthepregnantmothersandnewbornbabiesinthewakeofdisaster.WeteamedwithOneHeartWorldWideandoffIwenttobringtheBumiSehatmodelofcaretoanotherheartbrokencountry.OnMay12thIwasinNepal,whendisasterstruckagain,witha7.3earthquake.

WithyourgeneroussupportwewereabletosetupaChildbirthCenterinDhadingDistrict,upcountryfromKathmandu,besidethedestroyedgovernmenthealthcenter.WeworkedwiththeNepaleseSkilledBirthAttendants,intwotents,litbysolarlanterns.Thewomencamefromfarandwide,tosafely,gentlygivebirth.

ThisisDewi,whoarrivedinahalf-brokenambulance,fromBhumistan,inhardlabor.Shehadhadnopreviousprenatalcare.ThemomentwesawherNepaleseMidwifeShanti,andIlookedateachotherandsaid,“Twins!”

Withinminutesofherarrival,Dewiwasholdingababyboy.WelearnedfromhermotherthatDewiwas16yearsold,andhadalreadylostherfirstchild,afewmonthsearlier,topneumonia.

Thesecondcomingbabywasindistress,Dewitopushedwithgreatstrength,andatinybabygirlarrived.Thisbabyneededhelpbreathing,butsoontooktolife.Dewihemorrhagedcritically.Hadwenotbeenthere,andhadtheambulancetiredtopushontoKathmandu,Dewiandthesecondcomingbaby,wouldhaveperishedalongtheway.TherearemanystoriesofNepal,butthisonestandsout,becausewithoutquestion,Bumi’spartnershipwithOneHeart,andourgenerousdonorssavedtwopreciouslives.

Iwillshareonesadstory,ofamotherMaria,whowedonothaveaphotoof.ShewasfromSumba,only17yearsold,sopoorthatsheneverhadevenoneprenatalcheck-up.Themorningherlaborbegan,sheandherunemployedhusbandhadjustheardofBumiSehat,theywalkedintherain,fornearlythreehourstoreachus.Sadly,theydidnotknowthatwewouldbehappytopickthemup.Theyhadnophone,andweresomalnourishedthatwhentheyarrivedwecouldsmellkeytoneonthemother’sbreath,thisonlyhappenswhenapersondoesnoteatformanydays.

WeBumiSehatmidwivesgreetedMariawarmly,wegaveherandherhusbandatowelanddryclothes.WhenweexaminedMaria,wecouldnotfindaheartbeat,Mariahadnotfeltherbabymovingforfourdays.OurultrasoundconfirmedthatMaria’sbabyhadalreadydied,evenbeforebirth.WordscannotdescribethesorrowandthedifficultyinconveyingthissadfacttoMaria.

ThiscouplehadnofamilyinBali,nomoneyandnohome.Wenotonlyhelpedwiththebirth/death,butBumiSehatcontactedaministeroftheirreligion,andwepaidforthefuneral.PastorHansandhiswife,TantihadtheirownbabiesatBumiSehat.Theywerehappytohelp.ThecommunityhasnowfoundasmallhomeforMariaandherhusband,andhenowhasajob.OurmidwivesareprovidingMariawithnutritionalsupportwithfreevitamins,inthehopethatifshebecomespregnant,thebabywillsurvive.Thisbabydiedofpoverty.WeonlywishMariahadfoundussooner,wewillalwayswonder,ifwithsupport,food,vitamins,ahome…wouldherbeautifulbabygirlhavesurvived?Wecannotcounttheoneswesave,butwithyourhelp,theyaremany.

ThankyousomuchDFW,ithasbeenafruitfulfirsthalfyearofsupportfromyou.Westillrememberthefirstvisit,yearsago,whenyourgroupcametoseeusatBumiSehat.Thishasblossomedintorealcareforrealwomenandchildreninneed.ThankyouforkeepingourVisionandProgramsalive,thisyearaswefacethechallengeofbuildingournewclinic,racingtocompleteit,beforetheleastrunsoutin2016,onthecurrentclinic.
