Detroit Diesel began producing heavy-duty diesel engines in 1938. Its engines

have long lifecycles and are utilized for commercial transport, military

applications, and marine power generation. Of the five million Detroit Diesel

engines produced since 1938, its estimated one million are still in service.

Detroit Diesel marine engines include both 2- and 4-cycle engines with inline

and V-block configurations as well as naturally aspirated and turbocharged air

intake systems.

First produced in 1957, the "53" refers to inches of cubic engine displacement

per cylinder. The 8-cylinder model is the one most commonly used for marine

applications. One benefit provided by the 2-stroke engine in marine use is the

engine can be rotated in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

DETROIT DIESEL MARINE ENGINE SERIES

SERIES 53

Produced from 1987-2011, the Series 60 is an inline-6, 4-stroke diesel engine

with displacement ranging from 11.1 to 14 liters. It features a drive-by-wire

electronic control system as well as an overhead camshaft. Since 1992, more

Series 60 engines have been sold than any other make or model, and it's a

staple for marine applications due to its compact size and fuel economy.

SERIES 60

This two-stroke diesel engine was produced from 1938-1995. The inline-6

version was introduced in 1938 while the V-type came out in 1957. Like the 53

Series, the "71" refers to cubic inches of displacement per cylinder, rounded up

from 70.93. The 1,800 horsepower 24V71 was produced for marine applications.

SERIES 71

SERIES 92

Modeled on the Series 71, the 2-cycle, V-block Series 92 was released in 1974.

The 6V92T is commonly used on yachts, Coast Guard boats have traditionally

employed the 6V92TA, and ferries have long used the 8V92T.

SERIES 149

Series 149 two-stroke engines were produced from 1967-1999. With

turbocharging and intercooling, the 16V149 marine version produces 2,400 hp

at 2,100 rpms.
