INTRODUCTION CAI is a natural outgrowth of the application of the

principles of programmed learning.CAI facilitates instant access to accurate

information with infinite opportunity for practice. It also provides opportunity

for systematically organised learning, to the maximum level possible, for all

learners. It makes learning easy and interesting. Three types of activities can be

pursued through the CAI system. Logo is a simple programming language

which can be taught to children. The second activity of CAI is gaming and

simulation. The third general type of CAI is controlled learning which includes

both drill and practice. Before starting the programme, the student checks-in

with the computer by displaying his identity number. This connects him with

his part of learning programme. A complete package of information stored in

the system is presented sequentially. It is displayed on the computer screen.

Then the computer asks the questions to test the student. If the student supplies

the correct answer, the computer gives some error signal and the topic is

presented again and re-tested. The student can also question the computer and

feed answers in to it by providing comments, answers and questions. Computer

assisted instruction facilitate instant access to accurate information with infinite

opportunity for systematically organized learning, to the learners. It makes

learning easy and interesting

COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION IN SOCIAL

SCIENCE

Computer assisted instruction [CAI] is an interactive

instructional technique where by a computer is used to present the instructional

material and monitor the learning that take place. Computer assisted instruction

is the combination of texts, graphics, sounds and video in enhancing the

learning process. The computer has many purposes in the classroom, and it can

be utilized to help a student in all areas of curriculum.

Computer assisted instruction refers to the computer

as a tool to facilitate and improve instruction.CAI programs use tutorial, drill,

practice, simulation and problem solving approaches to present topics and they

test the students understandings The use of computers in education started in the

1960s.With the advent of convenient microcomputers in 1970s, computer use in

schools has become widespread from primary education through the university

level and even in some pre -school programs. Instructional computers are

basically used in one of two ways: either they provide a straight forward

presentation of data or they fill a tutorial role in which the student is tested on

comprehension.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF CAI

The day may not be far off when most Indian

classroom has a computer. Every teaching computer can then become possible.

Educators, administrators, researchers and parent all have doubt but no one

denies the needs for making every about student computer literate, there are

misgiving about the effectiveness of computer for teaching. We should like to

see more than expensive time-wasting toys; the use of computers for teaching

enhances learning in demonstratable ways.

Science is an important subject in the school

curriculum that has two major problem areas that causes ineffective learning.

1. Limitation of teachers

2. Lack of Audio-visual aids

TYPES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION

1. Drill-and –practice

Page 7: Dilu online assignment

Drill and practice provide opportunities or students to repeatedly

practice the skills that have previously been presented and that

further practice is necessary for mastery

2. Tutorial Tutorial activity includes both presentation of information and its

extension in to different forms of work, including drill and

practice, games and simulation.

3

3. Games

Game software often creates a contest to achieve the highest score

and either beat others or beat the computer

4. Simulation

Simulation software can provide an approximation of

reality that does not require the expense of real life or

its risks.

5. Discovery approach

Discovery approach provides a large database of

information specific to a course a content area and

challenges the learner to analyze, compare, and evaluate

based on their explorations of the data.

6. Problem solving

This approach helps children develop specific

problem solving skills and strategies.

ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION

one –to-one interaction

great motivator

freedom to experiment with different options

instantaneous response / immediate feedback to the answers elicited

self pacing –allow students to proceed at their own pace

helps teacher can devote more time to individual students

Privacy helps the shy and slow learners to learns.

Individual attention .

Learn more and more rapidly .

Multimedia helps to understand different concepts through

multisensory approach.

Self directed learning –student can decide when where are what to

learn .

LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTER ASSISTED

INSTRUCTION May feel overwhelmed by the information and resources

available.

Over use of multimedia may divert the attention from the

content.

Page 9: Dilu online assignment

Learning became too mechanical.

Non-availability of good CAI packages.

Lack of infrastructure.

ROLE OF TEACHER

The introduction of CAI has created a fear in the teacher

community that its use in Instructional process will eliminate teachers from the

teaching sense .But , a matter of fact , CAI is a powerful tool for the teacher in

the instructional process , no doubt , the role of teacher has changed from his

conventional role of delivering lectures to that of a guide and a problem solver ,

but the fear or elimination is baseless teacher will essentially have to play their

role in CAI. Be CAI can improve the quality of their educational to the

teaching learning process CAI is a flexible system of instruction . CAI is

supportive to live teaching. The two can be used side by side . In CAI the

teacher has the chance to use new tools which will enhance his individual

satisfaction and will increase his efficiency . The teacher will be liberated from

his routine duty. He can devote his time for more creative work

CONCLUSION

Computer assisted instructional activities that

use computer as the primary vehicle for teaching content or process

rather than one-to one interaction with student’s .It helps all the

subjects. It reduces the number of teachers. It also provides

opportunity for systematically organized learning to the maximum

level possible, for all learners .It makes learning easy and interesting.

Computer assisted instruction uses a combination of texts, graphics,

sound and video in enhancing t he learning process. The computer

has many purpose in the classroom, and it can be utilized to help a

student in all areas of curriculum
