Digi-Key was presented with Keystone’s Platinum Level Sales Award for 2014 for the 12th year in a row at EDS this year. Receiving the award for Digi-Key is Todd Jesme. Presenting for Keystone was Joe Rosenblum and Richard Weiner.

In a separate event, Keystone also sponsored its 10th Annual Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tournament on Wednesday, May 12th where 10 cash-prize participants were declared winners. •

On Wednesday, May 13th, ECN held its second annual IMPACT Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in electronic design. With 26 winners in 19 product categories, three service categories and four special recognition

categories, it was a banner second year for the annual awards.

The event, held at the Mirage Hotel and Las Vegas as a part of the EDS 2015 Summit, was hosted by General Manager Nick Pinto, ECN Editorial Director David Mantey, Editor Kasey Panetta, and Digital Editor Jason Lomberg.

The keynote speaker, Mike Rainone, is the founder and chief innovation officer at PCDworks, Inc. He spoke about challenges of innovation in the 21st century, offering up examples of successful design changes like Coca-Cola classic

and some not so successful campaigns like the Chevy Aztec .

Ted Franceschi, CEO & Chief Development Officer of New Scale Technologies. New Scale’s M3-LS Linear Smart Stage won the Electromechanical/Mechanical Devices product category.

Brad Ruzicka, Director of Global Distribution & Channel Marketing at Texas Instruments (TI). TI took home two big wins at the IMPACT awards this year, winning in both Optoelectronics for its 0.3-inch TRP HD 720p DLP Display Chipset, and in Wireless Charging for the 10-watt wireless charging solution.

Kinana Hussain, Director of Market-ing with Peregrine Semiconductor. Peregrine took home two IMPACT awards for its UltraCMOS PE45450 RF Power Limiter (Passive Components & Discrete Semiconductors) and UltraC-MOS 10 Technology Platform (Material Technology Innovation).

Bob Tavares, President & CEO of API Technologies. API’s Radiation-Tolerant, Voltage-Controlled SAW Oscillator won the Oscillators category, and the company’s GaN-based 1 kW Solid-State Pulsed Power Amplifier took home another award in the RF Amplifiers category.

California Eastern Laboratories’ MeshWorks Wins Market Disrupter AwardDuring the second annual ECN IMPACT Awards, ECN honored MeshWorks ™, a product of California Eastern Laboratories, as the 2015 Market Disrupter. MeshWorks is a wireless sensor platform/network with embedded cloud connectivity. It first debuted on June 25, 2014 and consists of three key components: A wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) powered by CEL’s MeshConnect™ 2.4GHz 802.15.4 modules, a GUI-driven programming interface driven by the MeshWorks software suite, and cloud access which is facilitated by MeshWorks’ Ethernet and Cellular Gateway offerings.

The Market Disrupter, one of the most competitive categories, is designed to honor a product that was a total game changer for the industry and had a major impact on design engineering.

According to the company, MeshWorks is going to change the world of mesh protocol. “CEL has been developing ZigBee modules for the past eight years, and over that span we have seen our customers struggle time and time again with the implementation of the mesh protocol. It typically takes one-to-three years to become truly fluent in ZigBee, and many customers simply don’t have the time, energy or resources

for this undertaking. As a result, mesh protocols were simply out of reach for a large majority of our industrial and commercial customer base. The MeshWorks™ suite even includes a novel script generation tool ScriptNinja™ which walks the user through the creation of a simple script using step-by-step, easy-to-understand dialogs. With the advent of this new tool, programming tasks that would normally take months of embedded firmware training can be now be tackled by novices in a matter of minutes. Finally, the platform’s integrated sensor nodes and Ethernet/

cellular cloud access allow novice users to have their prototype networks communicating to a customized cloud dashboard in mere hours instead of months (or even years).”

MeshWorks became the third product to join the prestigious category alongside the 2014 winners Humavox™ Eterna™ and PLX Technology’s ExpressFabric. •

Mark Brown, Sales Director at California Eastern Labs (CEL). CEL’s MeshWorks was recognized in the Rapid Prototyping service category, but it also went home with the final award of the night when it was named ECNIA’s 2015 Market Disruptor of the Year.

The Electronic Representatives Association (ERA) and the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), the co-sponsors of EDS, again co-hosted their annual free breakfast program at EDS on Thursday, May 14th. The guest speaker was Dr. Esmael Adibi, economics professor at Chapman University in Orange, Cal., and the Anderson Chair of Economic Analysis. He is also the director of the university’s A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research. His presentation covered economic and business updates and forecasts.
